    Notes: An ion accelerator, purpose built to produce beams at energies down to 10 eV with current densities in the 10–100 μA cm−2 range, is described. Fitted with dual ion source assemblies, the machine enables ultralow energy ion implantation and the growth of films and multilayers to be carried out under highly controlled conditions. The accelerator delivers ion beams into an ultrahigh vacuum chamber, containing a temperature controlled target stage (range −120 to +1350 °C), where they are used to study the fundamental physics relating to the interaction of ultralow energy ions with surfaces. This knowledge underlies a wide range of ion-beam and plasma-based technologies and, to illustrate its importance, results are presented from investigations designed to determine the optimum conditions for the growth of diamond-like and aluminum films by ion-beam deposition and the formation of ultrashallow junctions in semiconductors by 2.5 keV As+ implantation. The later investigation shows how transient arsenic diffusion, which occurs during post-implant thermal processing, can be controlled by manipulating the substrate temperature during implantation. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Interdiffusion and intermixing have been examined in Fe/Si trilayers prepared with ions of different energies, using the direct ion beam deposition technique. Isotope-pure layers were deposited and spin-polarized neutron reflectivity used to determine the role of Fe diffusion in iron silicide formation. It was found that a nonmagnetic iron silicide was formed that contained Fe from both the top and bottom layers in the trilayer, suggesting complete diffusion across the spacer region. Electron microscopy observations revealed the presence of an iron silicide phase and crystalline interface layers in films prepared with low energy ions (30 eV), while mixed and amorphous-like regions were found at higher ion energies (100 eV). © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In the monomer–dimer model on a graph, each matching (collection of nonoverlapping edges) M has a probability proportional to λ|M|, where λ〉0 is the model parameter, and |M| denotes the number of edges in M. An approximate random sample from the monomer–dimer distribution can be obtained by running an appropriate Markov chain (each step of which involves an elementary local change in the configuration) sufficiently long. Jerrum and Sinclair have shown (roughly speaking) that for an arbitrary graph and fixed λ and ε (the maximal allowed variational distance from the desired distribution), O(|Λ|2|E|) steps suffice, where |E| is the number of edges and |Λ| the number of vertices of the graph. For sufficiently nice subgraphs (e.g., cubes) of the d-dimensional cubic lattice we give an explicit recipe to generate approximate random samples in (asymptotically) significantly fewer steps, namely (for fixed λ and ε) O(|Λ|(ln|Λ|)2). © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The redistribution of As during high-temperature annealing has been investigated as a function of the Si(100) substrate temperature (−120 °C, +25 °C, and +300 °C) during 2.5 keV implantation (to 1.5×1015atoms/cm2). Each implant produced a damaged near-surface region, the extent of which varied with implant temperature. Samples implanted at each temperature were annealed in a nitrogen ambient with a few percent oxygen for 10 s at 550, 925, and 975 °C. The changes in implant damage and dopant distributions both prior to and following annealing were investigated using medium energy ion scattering and secondary ion mass spectrometry. Transient enhanced diffusion (TED) of the dopant was observed for all implant temperatures after 925 °C annealing with the 25 °C implant showing the deepest diffusion. Between 925 and 975 °C annealing, the As diffusion rate in the 300 °C exceeded that of the 25 °C implant. Significantly, the −120 °C implant displayed less TED of As compared to the higher temperature implants following annealing at 975 °C. The results indicate that the diffusion is affected by the nature of the post-implant damage and the high arsenic concentrations. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Objective:  The uncertain taxonomy of oral anaerobic gram-positive bacilli and their generally slow growing nature has limited the understanding of their role in periodontal disease. The current objective was to design and use species-specific oligonucleotide probes to investigate the relationship of selected gram-positive anaerobic bacilli to periodontal disease.Methods:  Plaque and clinical measurements were collected from 40 patients with periodontitis and from 40 matched controls. Oligonucleotide probes were designed for Bulleidia extructa, Eubacterium nodatum, Mogibacterium timidum and Slackia exigua and used to probe nucleic acids extracted from the samples with a chemiluminescent detection method. Species were quantified as absent or present at low (approximately 103−104 cells), medium (approximately 104−105 cells) or high levels (approximately 105−106 cells).Results:  M. timidum and B. extructa were detected in only three and four samples, respectively. The level of both E. nodatum and S. exigua was significantly higher in deep than shallow pockets (Wilcoxon, p 〈 0.001). The level of E. nodatum, but not S. exigua, was higher in patients than matched controls (Mann–Whitney U, p 〈 0.03). Using an ordered logistic regression model, the probing depth of the sampled sites had the greatest influence on the level of both species and significant variations occurred between individuals. Bleeding also influenced the levels of both species, with supragingival plaque influencing S. exigua.Conclusion:  Both E. nodatum and S. exigua were associated with clinical indicators of periodontal disease.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: To characterise the pharmacokinetics of adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) in patients with lung cancer after i.v. administration of different ATP dosages. Methods: Twenty-eight patients received a total of 176 i.v. ATP courses of 30 h. Fifty-two infusions were given as low-dose infusions of 25–40 μg kg−1 min−1, 47 as middle-dose infusions of 45–60 μg kg−1 min−1 and 77 as high-dose infusions of 65–75 μg kg−1 min−1 ATP. Kinetic data of ATP concentrations in erythrocytes were available from 124 ATP courses. Results are expressed as mean ± SEM. Results: Most ATP courses in cancer patients were without side effects (64%), and side effects occurring in the remaining courses were mild and transient, resolving within minutes after decreasing the infusion rate. Baseline ATP concentration in erythrocytes was 1554 ± 51 μmol l−1. ATP plateau levels at 24 h were significantly increased by 53 ± 3, 56 ± 3 and 69 ± 2% after low-dose, middle-dose and high-dose ATP infusions, respectively. At the same time, significant increases in plasma uric acid concentrations were observed: 0.06 ± 0.01, 0.11 ± 0.01 and 0.16 ± 0.01 mmol l−1, respectively. The mean half-time for disappearance of ATP from erythrocytes, measured in five patients, was 5.9 ± 0.5 h. Conclusions: During constant i.v. infusion of ATP in lung cancer patients, ATP is taken up by erythrocytes and reaches dose-dependent plateau levels 50–70% above basal concentrations at approximately 24 h.

    Notes: Abstract   Background: The Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN), the successor of the ninth version of the Present State Examination (PSE-9), is one of the latest instruments developed by the World Health Organisation for the assessment of psychiatric disorders. So far, the psychometric properties have only been established for certain sections of the instrument. The present study is the first to test the psychometric properties of SCAN-2.1 for most of the disorders covered by the SCAN, and was carried out prior to a survey conducted in the Nijmegen Health Area (the Netherlands). Methods: Interviewers were psychology graduates with little clinical experience. Two designs were used. In one design, pairs of independent live interviews with the same respondent were compared (test-retest situation). In the other, ten videotaped interviews by experts were rated by each of the interviewers (standardized situation), and the outcomes were compared with those of the other interviewers as well as with a reference score. Results: In the test-retest situation the κ coefficient for diagnostic caseness was qualified as substantial (0.62) and for diagnostic categories and diagnostic groups as moderate to good (0.24 to 0.64). In the standardized situation using videotaped interviews by experts, sensitivity as well as specificity proved to be substantial to almost perfect. The agreement per interviewer with regard to the reference diagnoses ranged from 87% (diagnostic group) to 94% (diagnostic caseness). Agreement on the syndrome level (without duration and interference criteria of DSM-IV) was excellent. Conclusions: Although the instrument is traditionally used by experienced clinicians, this study shows that less experienced (but well trained) interviewers can apply SCAN reliably. Special attention should be paid to the items without explicit interview questions, as they tend to be more sensitive to neglect than the items with interview questions.

    Notes: Abstract This paper investigates closure properties possessed by certain classes of finite subdirect products of prime rings. If ℳ is a special class of prime rings then the class ℳ∞ of all finite subdirect products of rings in ℳ is shown to be weakly special. A ring S is said to be a right tight extension [resp. tight extension] of a subring R if every nonzero right ideal [resp. right ideal and left ideal] of S meets R nontrivially. Every hereditary class of semiprime rings closed under tight extensions is weakly special. Each of the following conditions imposed on a semiprime ring yields a hereditary class closed under right tight extensions: ACC on right annihilators; finite right Goldie dimension; right Goldie. The class of all finite subdirect products of uniformly strongly prime rings is shown to be closed under tight extensions, answering a published question.
