Notes: In this paper, methods and algorithms are presented for an efficient slicing process specifically designed for microstereolithography, a high-resolution rapid prototyping technology. Modifications are given for different implementation environments (FPU, Parallel Computing, directly wired processes). They use the common STL-format as the description of the 3D objects and compute bitmapped layers for the layered manufacturing step. Specific attention was paid to the requirements for flexibility, accuracy, supporting standards and performance. A layer-resolution of up to 32767×32767 pixels is supported. The described system is a flexible solution easy to be coupled with almost any system controller for a micro-stereolithography machine using the integral irradiation process.

Notes: Abstract For quality tests of ceramic Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductor materials (precursors and final products) accurate stoichiometric determinations of the metallic major components are necessary. Three methods were developed during the last decade in our group. Their properties and the results obtained are compared. The first classical analytical procedure requires to much manpower. The second combined chemical-spectrometric procedure is a routine method today, but also unsuitable for rapid tests. A new fully spectrometric procedure was recently developed using a simultaneously working Echelle spectrometer with CID detector, autosampler and a special self-made data evaluation software. The basis of this method are multi-line measurements of each analyte element, a new method of spectral line selection for main component precision determinations, multi-component calibrations, and frequent external standardizations. For this method the sum of the confidence intervals of all element determinations was less than 1%, and no systematic error was detected.

Notes: Abstract The large surface area of barks from many tree species enables the effective accumulation of pollutants. Therefore, the analysis of bark material will provide useful information about the degree of pollution of a certain region. The determination of main, minor, and trace elements (Al, Ca, Cd, Ce, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, P, Pb, S, Ti and Zn) in bark was performed with an Nd:YAG laser coupled to an ICP-MS system. Bark standards for the calibration by laser ablation ICP-MS were prepared from different bark layers which differ for some relevant elements in concentrations. Four digestion procedures for the decomposition of the standard pellets, the numbers of laser shots per sample and of samples per region necessary have been investigated. Representative results were obtained for 5 or more samples taken from different individuals of one species of a sampling area and the averaged element concentrations of 10 separately placed laser shots for each sample. Laser ablation ICP-MS was applied for the characterization of real bark samples from different regions with high and low pollution burden. It was shown that the method is well suited to characterize different degrees of environmental impact. Anthropogenic sources were responsible for the higher concentrations of most of the elements under investigation.

Notes: Abstract. We investigate the possibility to constrain the pion distribution amplitude from the $\gamma^* \gamma^* \to\pi$ transition. For a surprisingly large range in the two photon virtualities we find that the transition form factor is essentially independent of the distribution amplitude. This in turn entails a parameter-free prediction of QCD. The $\gamma^* \gamma^* \to\eta, \eta'$ form factors are also briefly discussed. We estimate that experimental studies might be feasible at the existing $e^+e^-$ experiments BaBar, Belle, and CLEO.

Notes: Abstract. We study the handbag contribution to two-photon annihilation into baryon-antibaryon pairs at large energy and momentum transfer. We derive factorization of the process amplitude into a hard $\gamma\gamma \to q\overline{q}$ subprocess and form factors describing the soft $q\overline{q}\to B\overline{B}$ transition, assuming that the process is dominated by configurations where the (anti)quark approximately carries the full momentum of the (anti)baryon. The form factors represent moments of time-like generalized parton distributions, so-called $B\overline{B}$ distribution amplitudes. A characteristic feature of the handbag mechanism is the absence of isospin-two components in the final state, which in combination with flavor symmetry provides relations among the form factors for the members of the lowest-lying baryon octet. Assuming dominance of the handbag contribution, we can describe current experimental data with form factors of plausible size, and predict the cross sections of presently unmeasured $B\overline{B}$ channels.
