Notes: We studied nonradiative recombination centers in undoped (AlxGa1−x)0.5In0.5Pgrown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy using transient capacitance spectroscopy. We found three deep energy levels, including a mid-gap level. We drew an equation to get a capture cross section for minority carriers, and obtained it using isothermal capacitance transient spectroscopy measurement. The mid-gap level had an electron capture cross section of 2 × 10−10 cm2 and a hole capture cross section of 1 × 10−15 cm2. The time constant of nonradiative recombination through the mid-gap level was found to be comparable to that of radiative recombination. We concluded that the mid-gap level is an effective nonradiative recombination center that reduces photoluminescence intensity.

Notes: The microstructure of epitaxial MnSb grown on (111) oriented Si substrates by hot-wall epitaxy has been assessed using the combined techniques of x-ray diffraction, and conventional and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The growth temperature and layer thickness dependence of epitaxial MnSb/Si has been investigated. Optimum MnSb(0001) layers were grown under conditions of low substrate temperature of 300 °C with a Sb/Mn flux ratio of 10. HRTEM imaging revealed the existence of a thin interfacial layer of MnSi rotated 30° with respect to the Si substrate to reduce the lattice mismatch. The predominant epitaxial relationship is given by (0001),[1¯21¯0]MnSb(parallel)(111),[12¯1]MnSi(parallel)(111),[01¯1]Si. Only evidence for the presence of MnSi was found with no evidence for any other Mn–Si phases. The formation of MnSi is enhanced at an elevated substrate temperature of 350 °C, while the quality of the MnSb overlayer is correspondingly degraded leading to polycrystalline growth. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Modification of an electroporation buffer using Ca(NO3)2 and elevated pH (9–10) appeared to have a favorable effect on gene transfer to creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) Penncross protoplasts, resulting in an increase in the transformation frequency of about twofold. Following electroporation with the plasmid pARK22 containing the bar gene, a total of 278 bialaphos-resistant cell colonies were obtained from four experiments. The bialaphos-resistant regenerants proved to be transgenic by Southern hybridization of the amplified DNA. All the tested transgenic plants showed herbicide (HERBIE) resistance at the field rate of 0.5–1% (vol/vol). Ammonia contents in leaves after spraying with the herbicide increased less in transgenic plants than in untransformed control plants.

Notes: Abstract Transgenic Japanese lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) plants were generated by means of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-mediated direct gene transfer into protoplasts. The plasmid pBC1 was used to deliver the hygromycin phosphotransferase (hph) and β-glucuronidase (gus) genes into protoplasts. Selection with a high concentration (400 mg/l) of hygromycin yielded a number of resistant calli and about 400 plants were generated. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Southern hybridization analyses revealed that all of then plants tested contained introduced genes. The gus gene regulated by the maize alcohol dehydrogenase-1 (Adh 1) promoter was expressed in the leaves and roots of transgenic Japanese lawngrass plants.

Notes: Abstract  We investigated the possible role of dopamine receptors in the mediation of copulatory disorder induced by defeat experience in male mice, using l-dopa and apomorphine. To generate the copulatory disorder, male mice were attacked 20 times daily for 5 consecutive days, as intruders in confrontation with an aggressive resident. Following the repeated exposure to defeat, virtually all intruder males failed to display copulatory behavior towards estrous females. Acute injection of apomorphine (25, 50, 75 μg/kg, SC) significantly increased both the incidence and the frequency of copulatory elements (mounting and intromission) in a dose-dependent manner. The combination of l-dopa with carbidopa, a dopa decarboxylase inhibitor, also increased significantly copulatory behavior, revealing an inverted U-shaped dose-effect curve. In both cases, locomotion and digging frequencies were significantly decreased. This evidence suggests that dopaminergic mechanisms are involved in the mediation of social stress-induced copulatory disorder.

Description / Table of Contents: Verbindungsbildung im System PbGeO3—Pb5Ge3O11Die Verbindungsbildung im System PbGeO3—Pb5Ge3O11 wurde mittels Thermoanalyse und Hochtemperatur-Röntgenbeugung untersucht.
Notes: Compound formation in the system PbGeO3—Pb5Ge3O11 was studied by thermal analysis and high-temperature X-ray diffraction. New modifications of PbGeO3 and Pb5Ge3O11 were prepared by the simultaneous hydrolysis of lead and germanium alkoxides, followed by washing and drying; the former has a hexagonal unit cell with a = 15.573 Å and c = 7.240 Å, and the latter has an orthorhombic crystal structure with a = 5.081 Å, b = 7.301 Å and c = 8.817 Å. They are transformed to the known monoclinic and hexagonal modifications at 575 to 610°C and 410 to 450°C, respectively. No compound of Pb3Ge2O7 was confirmed. The structures of germanate groups in the lead germanate compounds are discussed on the basis of the infrared spectral data.
