Notes: Abstract —Efficacy of the global optimisation technique is demonstrated in the inversion of time domain electromagnetic data. Transient EM responses observed using a coincident loops system along several profiles and different time channels over a plate like conducting body are inverted, using very fast simulated annealing (VFSA) as an optimisation tool. Three time channels for each profile are considered in the inversion. Study reveals that only one run of global inversion considering a single multi-channel profile is not enough to resolve all the nine model parameters of a plate-like conducting body. However, the global inversion of a single multi-channel profile with several runs yields a mean model that is quite close to the true model. Considering many profiles and time channels together in the global inversion can yield reliable estimates of all the parameters. Computationally, this is not an efficient procedure. Analysis of the results shows, however, that two distant profiles are enough to yield all the model parameters reliably, even after one run of the global inversion. Both noise-free and noisy synthetic data are used in the inversion. Finally, field data are also inverted to study the performance of the global inversion.

Notes: Abstract In situ testing of bridges demands considerable expertise and entails heavy expenditure. The objectives of the tests may vary from being merely routine tests to diagnostic tests in order to locate the source of distress in the structure. An attempt is made in this paper to discuss briefly the objectives of the tests and the instrumentation usually employed. Salient features of the tests on concrete bridge superstructures reported in the last decade are summarised. Discussion on the evaluation criteria and recommendations for further work are also included.

Notes: Abstract Necessary and sufficient conditions that a cylindrical, symmetric line element may be of class one have been derived in terms of metrical quantities. The conditions so obtained have been compared with those in the cases of spherical, planar, and hyperbolic symmetries.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that Karmarkar's condition which has been claimed to be a necessary and sufficient condition for the spherically symmetric (s.s.) space-time to be of class 1 ceases to be sufficient in caseR 2323=0. An s.s. line element which satisfies Karmarkar's condition but ceases to be of class 1 is given. This line element describes a conformally flat perfect fluid distribution with zero density.

Notes: Poly-1H,1H-pentadecafuorooctyl methacrylate is a barrier compound used to prevent silicone oil from creeping to relay contacts. It is essentially a methyl methacrylate polymer with a fluorocarbon side chain substituted for one of the methyl hydrogens. It is applied by dipping the part into a solution, with Freon TF as the solvent and the fluorocarbon polymer as the solute. This work considers the spatial distribution of the resulting film of barrier compound when it is deposited in this manner. The specific variables considered are concentration and withdrawal velocity. The samples were withdrawn from the solution with velocity perpendicular to the surface, and we show that the macrosopic uniformity and thickness of the film is dependent on this velocity. There exists a critical velocity (dependent on concentration) above which the film is nonuniform and below which the film is macroscopically uniform. Below the critical velocity, the thickness varies with velocity with approximately a v2/3 dependence. The critical velocity is about 13 mm/sec for a concentration of 0.2%. For macroscopically uniform films, a microscopic nonunitormity exists with a coverage of about 1/4 for an average film thickness of 90 Å.

Notes: Abstract Effect of optimal concentration of propyl gallate (25 μg/ml) on inorganic and lipid peroxides was studied in banana fruitfly, Zaprionus paravittiger. Both the peroxides significantly increased with age and decreased on antioxidant feeding to insects. The reduction was more pronounced in females and in young stages as compared to males and in old age. The results are indicative of the protective role of propyl gallate against free radicals.

Notes: Abstract Antioxygenic enzymes provide defense to the cell against free radicals produced during respiration. This study deals with the effect of propyl gallate feeding on antioxygenic and respiratory enzymes in liver of male mice of different age groups. Antioxidant increased the activities of catalase, glutathione reductase, ATPase and NADH-dehydrogenase significantly in 8-month-old mice, whereas the increase in activity in early and late growth stages was observed only at selective concentrations. The increased activities of antioxygenic enzymes on propyl gallate feeding may be attributed to an increase in the activities of respiratory enzymes.
