Notes: A six-month old male infant with severe atopic dermatitis was admitted with hypoalbuminemia, oliguria and cyanosis of the extremitie. s. There was marked edema and generalized eczema with foul, yellowish exudates. The patient's major clinical manifestations were attributed to the loss of albumin through the skin. Although atopic dermatitis is a common disease in children, here we want to show that systemic disturbances may arise from such condition, describe the total care given the patient, and emphasize the wholistic approach in managing cases of severe atopic dermatitis, intensive treatment was instituted and the patient was discharged after three weeks and remained in a stable condition.

Notes: Three cases of plaque-type blue nevus accompanied with lentigo-like changes were reported. The combination of blue nevus and lentigo (nevus spilus) is a new type of “combined nevus”, but it belongs to the second type of Kawamura's atypical blue nevus. This combination is unlikely to be rare, not only in plaque-type, but also in common type blue nevus, and to be comparable with the findings of such dermal melanocytosis as nevus of Ota. Histologically, cellular blue nevus was also observed in areas of Case 1.

Notes: Nodulated soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) plants were grown in a nitrogen-free liquid culture medium prepared with distilled water. The cytosol fraction from root nodules showed a significant level of NADH-dependent nitrate reductase activity, even when the root did not show activity. This nitrate reductase was purified by column chromatography and native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). The purified protein showed a main band at 100 kDa on sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-PAGE. The Km value for nitrate was 0.16 mM, and the highest activity was obtained at around pH 7.5. These characteristics are very similar to the inducible type of nitrate reductase, previously purified from soybean leaves. The developmental change in activity of this enzyme corresponded to that in nitrogenase activity.

Notes: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of two 1-week low-dose triple-therapy drug regimens involving antisecretory drugs for Helicobacter pylori infection, 99␣patients with H. pylori infection were treated with either lansoprazole or ranitidine used together with clarithromycin and metronidazole.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:The drug combination and administration periods in the proton pump inhibitor group were lansoprazole 30 mg o.m., clarithromycin 200 mg b.d. and metronidazole 250 mg b.d., all given for 7 days (LCM group). The ranitidine group received ranitidine 150 mg b.d., clarithromycin 200 mg b.d. and metronidazole 250 mg b.d. also for 7 days (RCM group). The presence or absence of H. pylori was determined from gastric biopsy specimens taken from both the antrum and the body, by smear, culture and tissue section (Giemsa stain). Cure was defined as failure to find evidence of H. pylori infection 4 weeks after antimicrobial therapy had ended.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:The cure of H. pylori infection was 88% in the LCM group (44 of 50; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 79–97%) and 92% in the RCM group (45 of 49; 95% CI = 84–99%). The incidence of adverse events was 16% and 18% for the two groups, respectively.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:No significant differences in cure rate and safety profiles were noted between the two regimens, suggesting that moderate acid inhibition using an H2-blocker is sufficient to achieve optimal H. pylori eradication.

Notes: The flat-specimen effect on the peak profile in powder diffractometry with Bragg–Brentano geometry can quantitatively be treated as a convolution with an asymmetric window function. The formula of the window function and a practical method for numerical calculation of the convolution are proposed. By applying the model function given by the convolution of the pseudo-Voigt function with asymmetric window functions based on vertical (axial) divergence and the flat-specimen effect, experimental profiles measured with a conventional diffractometer are fairly well reproduced with only a few parameters. When this function is applied to the analysis of experimental diffraction profiles of a lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) standard sample measured with a conventional powder X-ray diffractometer, the lattice constant is estimated as a = 4.15685 (2)–4.15693 (2) Å at 299 (1) K, without the use of any other standard material or preceding correction of systematic instrumental errors, while the specified value is a = 4.15695 (6) Å.

Notes: The effect of transparency and finite thickness of the sample on the peak profile in powder diffractometry with Bragg–Brentano geometry is treated as a convolution with an asymmetric aberration function. The formula of the aberration function and a practical method for numerical calculation of the convolution are proposed. The model function for the total profile is given by triple convolution of the pseudo-Voigt function with asymmetric functions based on vertical (axial) divergence, horizontal (equatorial) divergence and sample transparency. The validity of the model profile function is examined by fitting the Cu Kα X-ray diffraction profile of diluted lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) standard samples (SRM660) of 0.5 mm thickness, the transparency of which is varied by mixing with different amounts of starch; all the parameters that may affect the shape of the profile function are treated as fixed parameters. Even in the case of heavily distorted profiles of highly transparent samples with the inverse linear absorption coefficients μ−1 = 0.34 and 1.19 mm, experimental profiles are fairly well reproduced by the model function, typically within several % in R factor. It is also demonstrated that the lattice constants of the transparent samples are precisely evaluated by applying this model function.

Notes: Abstract The periodontal conditions of 2424 pregnant and 1565 non-pregnant women were assessed according to the community periodontal index of treatment needs (CPITN). The aim of this survey was to obtain information which is necessary for the planning of preventive programs of periodontal disease for pregnant women. 95% of the pregnant women and 96% of the non-pregnant women had some signs of periodontal disease. The % of pregnant women having 4 or 5 mm pockets was significantly higher than that of non-pregnant women, increased with the month of pregnancy, reached a maximum of 31%) in the 8-month group, but decreased to the control level in the 9-month group. These changes were interpreted to suggest that the increase of pocket depth during pregnancy was caused by gingival enlargement rather than by periodontal destruction. The results show that pregnant women had a healthier periodontal condition when compared with non-pregnant women, i.e., the number of sextants with healthy periodontal tissues was higher, the % of people having deep pockets (6 mm or deeper) was lower, and the need for prophylaxis was lower in pregnant than in non-pregnant women. These findings suggest that a special program of periodontal disease prevention for pregnant women is not necessary.

Notes: Summary An elastic stress-strain relation is formulated in terms of crack tensors which makes it possible to take into account explicitly the effect of joints on elastic behavior of rock masses. The present study is to discuss some related topics which may be encountered in its practical application. Two problems are solved by incorporating the elastic stress-strain relation into a program for three-dimensional finite element analyses; i. e., stress concentration by surface loading and displacement by excavation of an intersecting tunnel. Validity of the results is checked by comparing them with a laboratory model test and a field test, with the following conclusions: The overall distribution of stress definitely depends on a joint stiffness ratio (i. e., normal stiffness to shear stiffness). If the ratio is chosen as unity, the stress concentration occurs mainly in the direction parallel to major joints. If the ratio is high, say 10, then the stress concentrates along the perpendicular as well as the parallel directions to major joints. It can be said, on the basis of the fairly good agreement of the calculations using the high stiffness ratio with the field and laboratory measurements, that the elastic solution by crack tensors provides a practical tool for estimating the stress and strain in strongly jointed rock masses.
