Notes: Pinning of a domain wall in uniaxial material by a thin layer defect is discussed. A coercivity Hc(approximately-equal-to)(2/3(3)1/2) (||ακ−1||/α) WfGM(K/M)((K/A)1/2) is found, where A, K, and M represent the exchange, anisotropy, and saturation magnetization of the bulk, and αA, and κK are those for the layer of thickness W(very-much-less-than)((A/K))1/2. The Gaunt-Mylvaganam thermal excitation factor fGM(approximately-equal-to)1–0.40 K1/2A−3/2kT. This model is shown to be capable of explaining both the magnitude and temperature dependence of Hc in MnAlC for plausible values of α and κ for the layer, identified as grain boundary. Objections to the more complex treatment by Chen and Gaunt are discussed, in particular violation of exchange torque continuity.

Notes: Objective To investigate the effect of subcutaneous oestradiol and testosterone on the proportion of type III collagen in the skin of postmenopausal women.Design A cross sectional comparison.Setting Dulwich Hospital menopause clinic.Subjects Fourteen untreated women and 11 women who had received subcutaneous oestradiol and testosterone for a median 8.0 years (range 3–14). Ten of the untreated women received subcutaneous hormone implants and the effect on skin collagen was studied prospectively.Measurements The proportion of type III collagen in skin biopsies taken from the lateral aspect of the thigh. Results The median type III collagen content in the skin of the women who had received hormone replacement therapy (25.4%, range 21.4–30.2) was significantly higher (P〈0.01) than in the untreated women (19.6%, range 18.2–28.8). The proportion of type III collagen in the skin of 10 untreated women increased significantly (P〈0.01) from a median of 19.9% (range 18.2–23.9) to 22.4% (range 20.5–31.5) following 6 months of treatment with hormone implants. Conclusion This study indicates an increase in the proportion of type III collagen in women receiving hormone replacement therapy.

Notes: We have used an oriented single crystal of Nd2Fe14B1 as a test sample to explore contrast and resolution as a function of magnetic force microscopy tip coating, tip scan height, and sample history. We find that resolution is independent of tip type; that contrast is greater at low scan heights and for higher moment tips; and that the fine length scale structure of order 25 nm can be resolved. We further show how the surface structure is a function of state (demagnetized or remanent), demonstrating the ability of well-characterized studies to give high-resolution information on carefully prepared samples. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The intertidal migrations of shallow water fishes in Kuwait Bay were studied during two 24 h periods using an otter trawl. Most species wereconcentrated at a location corresponding to Low Low Water mark. At the other tidal levels some fishes migrated with the tide to High High Water mark through a horizontal distance of up to 2 km. Any effect of day and night on the catch was masked by the effect of tidal condition. Leiognarhus decorus (de Vis) was typically concentrated at Low Water but a proportion of the population followed the rising tide toward the shore. There was a die1 effect whichmay have been due to fish moving to shallower water at night compared with the day. Length-frequency distribution changed slightly with tidal state so that larger fish were not captured at High Water during the day. Of the fishes captured at high tide, the largest individuals of L. decorus were captured at a depth of 2.0 m deep. Solea elongata Day did not migrate with tidal fluctuations and was captured in large numbers only at Low Water. Arius tenuispinis Day was captured in shoals at or around Low Water.

Notes: Direct-set cottage cheese packaged in barrier containers was flushed with 100% CO2 75% CO2:25% N2, 100% N2, or air, and stored at 4°C for 28 days. Quality was assessed by sensory, microbiological, and chemical tests. No change was observed in headspace gas composition during storage. Psychrotrophic and lactic acid bacteria counts increased for air-treated samples, but counts for cottage cheese packaged under modified atmospheres remained unchanged. Product discoloration was not observed. Acidity increased over storage life, but lactic acid did not contribute towards increased acidity. Sensory characteristics of cottage cheese packaged under modified atmospheres remained satisfactory after 28 days, with 100% CO2 best.

Notes: Retinoblastoma patients and their relatives appear to have an increased risk of other cancers, especially melanoma, which represents 7% of second primaries in retinoblastoma survivors. Individuals belonging to families with the atypical mole syndrome (another family cancer syndrome with a genetic susceptibility to melanoma) have a recognizable phenotype, with many atypical melanocytic naevi. We report two families in which both retinoblastoma and melanoma occurred. It is of interest that in these families atypical melanocytic naevi were also demonstrated.

Notes: D-values of Clostridium botulinum type E in oyster homogenates were calculated from the slopes of survivor curves for each variable tested (control, 1.0% NaCl, 0.13% potassium sorbate (KS), and a combination of NaCl and KS) at five temperatures. Mean D-values ranged from 0.78 min at 80°C to 7943 min at 50°C. The addition of salt and/ or KS affected heat resistance of the spores, but differences were not consistent among the temperatures tested, z-Values calculated for the curve between 70°C and 80°C ranged from 6.9 C° to 7.6 C°, while z-values calculated for the curve between 55°C and 70°C were 12.1–14.70°. These data indicate that C. botulinum type E would survive in oysters that are minimally processed. A suitable process could be determined using the data presented; however, oysters would have a cooked appearance.
