    Notes: The intertidal migrations of shallow water fishes in Kuwait Bay were studied during two 24 h periods using an otter trawl. Most species wereconcentrated at a location corresponding to Low Low Water mark. At the other tidal levels some fishes migrated with the tide to High High Water mark through a horizontal distance of up to 2 km. Any effect of day and night on the catch was masked by the effect of tidal condition. Leiognarhus decorus (de Vis) was typically concentrated at Low Water but a proportion of the population followed the rising tide toward the shore. There was a die1 effect whichmay have been due to fish moving to shallower water at night compared with the day. Length-frequency distribution changed slightly with tidal state so that larger fish were not captured at High Water during the day. Of the fishes captured at high tide, the largest individuals of L. decorus were captured at a depth of 2.0 m deep. Solea elongata Day did not migrate with tidal fluctuations and was captured in large numbers only at Low Water. Arius tenuispinis Day was captured in shoals at or around Low Water.

    Notes: Abstract At high population densities, the amphibious and herbivorous mudskipperBoleophthalmus boddarti construct mud walls around their territories as a means of reducing aggression between neighbours. Because of the walls, territories contain pools of water and exposed mud slopes. Whilst the density of benthic diatom prey was highly variable, the highest was found on the exposed mud slopes and the lowest on the boundary walls. Fish grazed mainly on the mud slopes. There were no significant differences in diatom density between territorial and non-territorial areas or between grazed and non-grazed areas within territories. The variation of the diatom density, however, was reduced within territories. The mud walls are considered to play a secondary, indirect role in maintaining populations of diatoms within territories.

    Notes: Abstract The ocypodid crabCleistostoma kuwaitense inhabits the upper shores of the mudflats of Kuwait, where it constructs a semi-permanent mud hood over the entrance to its burrow. Between September and November 1986, data were collected on the distribution and orientation of the hoods and their openings to investigate the crab's social spacing system. Irrespective of density, the distribution of burrow hoods is non-random, tending towards a regular dispersion. A contributory factor for this dispersion pattern is that the surface hoods tend to increase the distance between adjacent burrows. The hood openings are randomly distributed with respect to compass direction but avoid directly facing those of nearest neighbours. In the absence of burrow plugging and eviction as used by other ocypodid crabs, construction of elongated hoods appears to be a good alternative for ensuring social spacing.

    Notes: Summary Molecular changes in human mitochondrial DNA play a significant role in causing certain human diseases. Mitochondrial DNA mutations range from single base pair changes in the 16.5 kilobase pair genome up to large deletions and rearrangements. This report summarizes the current overall understanding of the mode and mechanism of mitochondrial DNA replication and transcription, and how this relates to mitochondrial gene expression, which is essential for cellular energy production and organelle biogenesis. Special attention is given to recent findings that bear on early steps in the process of transcription and, in turn, the consequences for initiating DNA replication

    Notes: Summary It is now clear that molecular defects in human mitochondrial DNA play a significant role in human disease. Mitochondrial DNA mutations range from single base changes in the 16.5 kilobase-pair genome up to large deletions and rearrangements. Independently of the actual cause of a given mutation, it is possible to predict at least some of the consequences of changes in mitochondrial DNA sequence. This paper reviews our overall understanding of the mode and mechanism of mitochondrial DNA replication and transcription and how this relates to mitochondrial gene expression. This provides a background to anticipate the nature and extent of mitochondrial DNA sequence changes that might be of physiological consequence.
