Notes: An experimental setup for studying the influence of the radial electric field on very low qa plasma on the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics tokamak is presented. A high current, high voltage pulsed power supply, using a semiconductor controlled rectifier (SCR) as a dc switch is developed and used to bias a tungsten electrode inserted inside the plasma. The electrode's exposed length and its position inside the plasma are controlled by a double bellows assembly to optimize the electrode-exposed length. We show that using the force commutation method to turn the SCR off to get the power pulse desired has good potential for carrying out similar kinds of studies, especially in a low budget small tokamak. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An investigation on the effects of acute (10 mg/kg) and chronic (10 mg/kg for 15 days) treatment with Δ9-THC administration by the intraperitoneal route, on the cholesterol, cerebroside and individual phospholipid contents in microsomal, synaptosomal, mitochodrial and myelin fractions from adult rat brain, is reported. The drug has been found to affect the different subcellular membranous lipid and phospholipid components in a characteristic manner.

Notes: —The present paper reports the result of studies undertaken to determine the effects of the in vivo administration of Δ9-THC on the ganglioside and sialoglycoprotein contents of rat brain subcellular fractions. Results indicate that the administration of the drug under both acute and chronic conditions brings about characteristic changes in the sialoglycoproteins and ganglioside content in all the subcellular fractions. Both sialoglycoproteins and ganglioside contents were markedly increased in microsomal and synaptosomal fractions and decreased in the mitochondrial fractions although the increase in the synaptosomal fractions has been found to be most striking. After chronic treatment, both ganglioside and sialoglycoprotein content did not change substantially in all the fractions except for a small increase in case of synaptosomal fractions.

Notes: Computation of the grain-size distribution of the suspended load above a sand bed must take into consideration: (1) sorting processes from the bed to the bed layer and (2) sorting between the bed layer and suspension. Grain-size distributions of the bed layers above sand beds of three different types have been computed in this work, both by the Einstein and the Gessler methods. Using these as references, suspended load distributions have been obtained in each case by the Rouse suspension equation. A new formula has also been developed in partial modification of Hunt's method for direct computation of bed load and suspended load from a bed's grain-size distribution and flow parameters.Comparison of the computed data with actual observations in laboratory flumes show that no one method is particularly superior to the others, but the present method is advantageous because it affords direct computation of the suspended load from a bed's grain-size distribution, without going through an intermediate stage (bed load). The possible sources of error in each of the methods have been discussed.

Notes: Summary The levels of hepatic threonine dehydratase and tryptophan pyrrolase are elevated in 5% tyrosine-fed rats, and these increases are dependent on the dietary tyrosine level. Experiments with RNA and protein synthesis inhibitors indicate that the appearance of these new enzyme activities are dependet on concomitant new protein synthesis and the inducer operates at a transcriptional level.

Notes: Summary Brain-cortex slices demethylate mescaline and p-methoxyacetanilide, a reference O-demethylating substrate, though the rate of demethylation of mescaline is about one third that of the reference substrate. The demethylase activity is localized mostly in the soluble supernatant (105000xg). It is purified 47-fold with respect to the demethylation of mescaline by ammonium sulfate precipitation and DEAE cellulose chromatography. The partially purified demethylase, which is stable for 3–5 days at −5° C in the presence of dithiothreitol and glutathione and is inhibited by p-chloromercuribenzoate, has maximal activity at pH between 7.2 and 8.0. It demethylates mescaline into 3,4-dimethoxy-5-hydroxyphenethylamine and 3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxyphenethylamine and some unidentified derivatives.

Notes: Abstract  A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal association in mulberry saplings var. S1, together with two levels of phosphate, on growth characters, leaf yield and phosphorus uptake. The experiment was conducted in the period 1995 to 1997 at the Technical Service Centre, Kashipur, Purulia (West Bengal) under rainfed, lateritic soil conditions. Pooled data analysis revealed that there was no significant variation among the treatments in most of the characters except height of plant and leaf moisture percentage. Plant height in both treatments with Glomus mosseae was significantly less than in the others, while there was significant reduction in moisture percentage in G. fasciculatum with 25 kg of phosphate and G. mosseae with 10 kg of phosphate ha–1 year–1 than in other treatments. There was no significant season–treatment effect on any of the parameters. Considering all the quantitative and qualitative characters, G. fasciculatum together with the most economic dose of phosphate showed more promising performance than G. etunicatum and G. mosseae with different doses of phosphate fertilizer. At 80% of the recommended dose of inorganic phosphate fertilizer, Rs 534.0 were earned as net profit.
