Abstract A systematic study of the variation of elastic moduli and Poisson's ratio of sintered iron compacts of porosity (up to 21.6%) has been carried out by measuring longitudinal and shear ultrasonic velocities. The variation of these parameters with porosity is compared with predictions of elasticity and scattering theories. Further, a linear relationship was observed between the elastic moduli and the ultrasonic velocities and the use of ultrasonic velocity as a predictor of elastic moduli is therefore recommended for porous materials.
