Notes: The B 1Πu–X 1Σ+g band system of the K2 molecule is investigated by Doppler-free polarization spectroscopy in a heat pipe oven. The transitions are measured in the region of 615 to 660 nm including vibrational levels up to v″=17 in the X state and all vibrational levels of the B state up to the dissociation limit. A Fabry–Perot interferometer is calibrated using metastable neon and K2 secondary wavelength standards to provide absolute accuracy in the frequency determination of less than 20 MHz. The comprehensive study of the band system is completed by LIF measurements to determine vibrational levels of the ground state up to v‘=62. A detailed analysis has been completed and the coefficients are given in a Dunham expansion that accurately represents the frequencies of lines with specified vibrational and rotational quantum numbers. The B and X potential curves and the Franck–Condon factors for the transitions between B and X states are determined. The dissociation energies have been found to be 4447±15 cm−1 for the X state and 2113±15 cm−1 for the B state. The height of the potential barrier of the B state above the 4 2P3/2+4 2S1/2 atomic levels is 295±17 cm−1 at an internuclear distance of 8.1±0.1 A(ring).

Notes: The non-ionic surfactants, Tween 20 (polyoxy-ethylene 20 sorbitan monolaurate) and Renex 36 (polyoxyethylene 6-tridecyl ether) enhanced the retention of a glyphosate-dye spray solution by barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) leaves. Tween 20 also enhanced absorption of 14C-glyphosate applied as droplets to barley leaves whereas Renex 36 similarly applied, reduced both absorption and movement of 14C-glyphosate. Renex 36 alone or mixed with glyphosate increased leakage of electrolytes from barley leaf segments whereas neither Tween 20 nor glyphosate, alone or mixed together, had any effect. No 14C-glyphosate complexes were detected in mixtures with either surfactant and neither surfactant affected the pH of the glyphosate solution. The results indicate that the reported enhancement of glyphosate phytotoxicity by Tween 20 is due to increased retention and absorption of the herbicide while the reported antagonism caused by Renex 36 is due to reduced glyphosate absorption and movement possibly as a result of alteration of membrane integrity.

Notes: Abstract Primary carcinoma of the bronchus is a major cause of death in males and females. Several studies report an increase in the incidence of adenocarcinoma and have suggested that this reflects changes in smoking habits or, alternatively, that it is a spurious rise due to changes in diagnostic criteria. To examine the latter suggestion we reviewed three cohorts of bronchial carcinoma from 1970, 1980 and 1990, using immunocytochemical techniques to refine diagnosis. We found that squamous cell carcinoma had been consistently overdiagnosed and adenocarcinoma and adenosquamous carcinoma consistently underdiagnosed in all groups. Also, many tumours showed evidence of divergent differentiation with both squamous and glandular components present. There was a small, but real temporal increase in the proportion of adenocarcinoma over the 10 years between 1970 and 1980, but this was not sustained between 1980 and 1990.

Notes: Abstract. Eggs, blood, liver, muscle, and feathers were analyzed for concentrations of total mercury in double-crested cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) nestlings from two reservoirs in south central New Mexico. Total mercury concentrations among eggs, tissues, and feathers were not significantly correlated. Concentrations of total mercury averaged 0.40 μg/g in liver and 0.18 μg/g in muscle tissues in both populations of nestlings. There were no significant changes in concentrations of total mercury in whole blood of nestlings collected 7–10 days and 17–22 days posthatch in Caballo Reservoir (0.36 μg/g and 0.39 μg/g, respectively) and in Elephant Butte Reservoir (0.36 μg/g and 0.34 μg/g, respectively). Total mercury concentrations were similar for blood, muscle, and liver in nestlings for both reservoirs. Total mercury concentrations were higher in eggs and tail, primary, and secondary feathers from nestlings at Caballo Reservoir compared to Elephant Butte Reservoir. Although there were no differences in concentrations of total mercury in fishes between the two reservoirs, bioaccumulation and biomagnification was evident in planktivorous and piscivorous fishes. The data demonstrate that feather analysis may not be a good predictor of tissue burden in nestlings from regions of low contamination.

Notes: Abstract A lithium-6 atomic beam is spin-polarized by means of optical pumping with a single-mode dye laser operating on the resonance transition. Simultaneous pumping of both hyperfine substates is achieved by frequency-splitting the laser light with an acousto-optic modulator. A polarization dependent signal, obtained by probing the optical activity of the beam with linearly polarized light, is utilized in a microprocessor-controlled laser stabilization scheme. The polarization is analyzed with a sextupole magnet and its overall value is 0.70 for an intensity of 1×1014 atms s−1. By reversing the sense of circular polarization of the pumping light the atomic beam polarization is easily reversed in direction.

Notes: Abstract The mode of action of the photosynthetic inhibitor produced byPandorina morum was examined by exposingVolvox globator and isolated spinach chloroplasts to a partially purified inhibitor preparation. Oxygen evolution ofVolvox, whole chloroplasts, and broken chloroplasts (-Calvin cycle) was reduced indicating that the substances inhibit the light reactions of photosynthesis. Oxygen evolution studies of other Volvocaceae confirmed the observation thatPandorina morum is not significantly influenced by its own inhibitor. Molecular weight approximation by gel filtration established that the inhibitor has a low, molecular weight (probably below 100 mw).

Notes: Abstract Automated Giemsa-banded chromosome image research has been largely restricted to classification schemes associated with isolated chromosomes within metaphase spreads. Overlapping chromosomes cause difficulties in the automated chromosome karyotyping process. First, overlapping chromosomes must be recognised and decomposed into the proper chromosome parts. Secondly, the decomposed chromosomes must be classified. The first difficulty is associated with image segmentation. The second area is a pattern recognition problem. Even if chromosomes within overlapping clusters are decomposed properly, classification capability is impaired due to feature distortion in the overlapped regions. In normal human metaphase spreads, chromosomes occur in homologous pairs for the autosomal classes, 1–22, and X chromosome for females. This research presents a homologue matching approach for overlapped chromosome recognition. The undistorted grey level information in isolated chromosomes is used for identifying overlapped chromosomes. An isolated chromosome prototype is obtained using neural networks. Dynamic programming and neural networks are compared for matching the prototype to its overlapped homoloque. The homologue matching method is applied to identifying chromosome 2 in 50 metaphase spreads. Experimental results showed that homologue matching using dynamic programming matching based on the density profile achieved a higher correct recognition rate than homologue matching using three different neural network approaches.
