Notes: The expression of human placental cell surface antigens was examined in cells of lymphoid origin, including peripheral blood lymphocytes and cultured lymphoblastoid cells of bone marrow or thymus derivation. A select group of this. defined set of surface antigens was detected on all three cell preparations. The most remarkable observation was the conspicuous absence of three subunits previously demonstrated to be present on all human cell surfaces examined to date. Antiserum directed against several placental components prevents adhesion and spreading of cell which grow attached to surfaces. These results suggest a role for these three glycoproteins in mediating cellular adhesion.

Notes: Early documentation is important in the process of sorting disaster victims. To provide a basis for this documentation, a four category card has been designed that can be rapidly used with little previous training. Once folded, the card displays the category of urgency on one side and basic medical details on the reverse. Later changes of category can easily be effected by refolding the card.

Notes: A plasma gun source has been successfully used to obtain sub-bottom profiles. The profiles show better penetration than with a 3-5 kHz source and more resolution than with an air gun. The plasma gun source is compact, self-contained, and requires no complex auxiliary equipment. The device was deployed from large research vessels and a small boat. The plasma gun produces sufficient acoustic energy and with its characteristically short pulse length and broad bandwidth it is an attractive sub-bottom profiler, especially in shallow fresh or salt water.

Notes: Abstract Bite-wing radiographs were used to assess periodontal disease in 304 Brazilian 15-year-old schoolchildren from a population with a low socioeconomic status. The criterion for destructive periodontitis was a distance from the cementoenamel junction to the alveolar crest greater than 2 mm. 90 subjects were excluded, mainly due to missing first molars. Bone loss was diagnosed in 28% of the subjects. More males than females were affected. 50% of all lesions were observed adjacent to first molars. The juvenile periodontitis type of lesion was found in 8 subjects. It was concluded that in young populations bite-wing X-rays seem to be valuable in screening for individuals with incipient bone loss as well as for identification of subjects with juvenile periodontitis. In community programs regular use of this kind of roentgen examination is therefore recommended.

Notes: Abstract Data concerning tooth loss in developing countries may indicate the dental health status in young people and serve as baseline data for evaluation of future dental health programs. The study population consisted of 304 schoolchildren (145 males, 159 females) from Belo Horizonte, M.G. Brazil. The mean age was 14.5, ranging from 13 to 16 yr. The number of teeth already lost and teeth indicated for extraction were assessed from two posterior bitewing radiographs and one frontal color photo which were obtained from all participants. The results showed that 2/3 of the studied population had lost one or more permanent teeth. The average number of missing teeth was 1.8 in both males and females. Of the various teeth, the mandibular first molars had most frequently been lost. Differences between the sexes concerning amount and pattern of lost teeth were small.

Notes: Abstract Recently WHO has launched an index for assessing the periodontal treatment needs of a population in terms of resources required. This Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs was applied in 308 Brazilian 15-yr-old schoolchildren from a population with a high prevalence of periodontitis. The results showed that almost all subjects needed some kind of care. Totally, 4133 time units were required. Most of the time needed was for motivation and instruction in oral hygiene, and scaling. Several individuals assigned for complex treatment due to pockets deeper than 5.5 mm showed no signs of radiographic bone loss, and in the cases with bone loss, the lesions were few and small. The CPITN therefore seemed to overestimate the need for treatment in this young population. To overcome this problem, it was suggested that complex treatment should not be included in planning of systematic periodontal care for young populations, and that subjects with time periodontal lesions should be given priority m community programs.

Notes: Abstract —The recurrence behaviour of large earthquakes, in several tectonic settings, has been explained by simple models of stress accumulation and release which assume that the fault stress state is solely a function of the far-field tectonic strain rate. However, the limited dataset of large event recurrence intervals has been a major obstacle to the verification of these and other models. We present the results from a simple analogue model of earthquake rupture and stick-slip which displays power-law frequency-size statistics and involves many cycles of large events. We show that, despite the macroscopic homogeneity of the model, large events do not conform to simple deterministic time- or slip-predictable patterns. However, when the recurrence intervals for large events are divided by the median recurrence interval, the normalized data are composed of two distinct lognormally distributed populations. One population is characterized by events which are strongly clustered in time with relatively short recurrence intervals and low moment release, the other by events which are weakly clustered in time with median-sized recurrence intervals. It is suggested that the long-term recurrence behaviour of large earthquakes, whilst being non-deterministic, may be modelled by a well-defined statistical distribution of recurrence intervals.
