    Notes: The electrical conductivity measured parallel and perpendicular to the layer planes of p-type GeSe single crystals was found to be anisotropic at low temperatures. Additionally, an irreversible increase of the conductivity parallel to the layer planes was observed at high voltages. This anisotropy is correlated to the stacking disorder of the crystal layers and to dislocation sets lying on the layers. Extended planar faults parallel to the crystallographic c axis are attributed to the conductivity switching observed perpendicular to this axis. The ratio σ(parallel)/σ⊥ obeys an exponential law, with an activation energy ΔE of about 25 meV. This effect seems to be the predominant one while the switching effect is of minor importance even in the low-temperature range.

    Notes: Extended twinning bands with their walls oriented parallel to the c axis of layered GeSe crystals seem to influence considerably the electrical conductivity of this material at low temperatures. The ratio σ(parallel)/σ⊥ of the conductivities on the layer plane measured parallel and normal to the twinning bands is thermally activated. This behavior leads to a value for the barrier height h of 18 meV. On the other hand, ac measurements in the same directions clearly show that the conductivity anisotropy vanishes at higher frequencies, thus permitting a rough estimation of the effective thickness of the walls.

    Notes: A series of thallium ternary chalcogenides with the composition Tl2xIn2(1−x)Se2, x = 0.2, 0.3,...0.9, have been studied by X-ray powder and, for some of them, single-crystal diffraction. They are tetragonal, space group I4/mcm, Z = 4, and isostructural with the binary semiconductor TlSe. Their crystal structures have been solved by direct methods and refined by the Rietveld method to a precision which is satisfactorily comparable to single-crystal results. As x is changed from x = 0.2 to x = 0.9 the unit-cell parameters and volume decrease or increase following Kurnakov's law, which is valid for solid solutions. Refined positional parameters of Se, In—Se and Tl—Se bond lengths vary with x also according to the same law. The distribution of In and Tl cations in 4(a) and 4(b) sites depends on the stoichiometry x and the crystals are composed of [In3+Se2]_{\infty}^- chains along the c axis in which InSe4 tetrahedra share edges; the chains are interconnected with Tl+(In+) ions.

    Notes: Abstract Purpose: Both docetaxel and cisplatin have moderate activity in patients with advanced urothelial cancer. We performed a multicenter phase II study in order to assess the efficacy and toxicity of the combination of these two agents in patients with advanced carcinoma of the urothelium. Patients and methods: Sixty-six patients not amenable to curative surgery or irradiation were enrolled onto this cooperative group study and treated on an outpatient basis with docetaxel 75 mg/m2 followed by cisplatin 75 mg/m2, both administered intravenously. Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor was administered subcutaneously at a dose of 5 µg/kg daily from day 5 until resolution of neutropenia. The chemotherapy was administered every three weeks for a maximum of six courses in patients without evidence of progressive disease. Results: Thirty-four of sixty-six patients (52%, 95% confidence interval 40%–64%) demonstrated objective responses, with eight achieving clinical complete responses and twenty-six partial responses. A multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that the patients most likely to respond were those without lung metastasis and without weight loss before treatment. The median duration of response was 6.1 months and the median times to progression and survival for all patients were 5 and 8 months, respectively. Absence of anemia, of liver metastases and of weight loss correlated with longer survival. Grade ≥3 toxicities included granulocytopenia in 33% of patients, anemia in 14%, diarrhea in 13% and emesis in 7% of patients. Conclusion: The combination of docetaxel and cisplatin appeared relatively well tolerated and moderately active in patients with advanced urothelial cancer. The patients most likely to benefit were those without weight loss and without lung or liver metastases.

    Notes: Abstract Microhardness measurements have been performed on Tl x In1−x Se semiconductors (x=0.0, 0.2, 0.3 ... 1.0). The microhardness, H, as a function of x shows a maximum at x ca. 0.5. A statistical evaluation of the obtained results leads to a log-normal distribution of the microhardness rather than, as expected, a polynomial one.

    Notes: Abstract A project-independent data model for the entire range of karyological information provides a comprehensive picture of all data items presently used in karyological research and characterizes their logical inter-relation. It is presented in the form of a hierarchical decomposition of the subject matter down to attribute-level data items. The applied analytical methods are relevant for the structuring of information in other branches of biology. Only sporadic and inconsistent efforts have previously been made to make the huge amount of available karyological information accessible in electronic form. In the view of growing demand for the availability of scientific data on computer networks, further attempts are to be expected presently. The present data model provides a framework for the design of individual databases and ensures compatibility of the resulting datasets.

    Notes: Summary On 26 March, 1993, a moderate magnitude earthquake (M s=5.5) occurred at 3 km epicentral distance from the town of Pyrgos, in Southern Greece, causing extensive damage to masonry houses. To explain the variability of seismic intensity over the town and to propose measures against future seismic activity, a microzonation study was undertaken which combined geological, geophysical and geotechnical investigations, site specific analyses of seismic ground response and detailed recording of structural damage. The analytical predictions of ground response are correlated to soil conditions and then used to identify (micro-)zones of sites with similar seismic response. Furthermore, they are compared to quantitative estimates of damage distribution over the town. It is concluded that the peak ground acceleration, normalized against the input peak seismic acceleration, is a function of the local soil conditions as well as the seismic excitation characteristics. Hence, it cannot be defined uniquely at a site, without reference to the seismic excitation. However, the normalized peak ground velocity and the acceleration response spectra are mainly functions of the soil conditions and can be used as criteria for the practical definition of (micro-)zones. The distribution of damage in various parts of the town is at least partially attributable to local soil effects. The small epicentral distance of the earthquake, connected with the direction of the fault rupture, as well as the quality and techniques of construction, are additional factors that may have influenced the extent and distribution of damage.

    Notes: Abstract Methylation experiments of the metals Sn, Pb and Hg were carried out using representative terrestrial and marine sediment samples from the Axios river and Thermaikos Gulf in northern Greece. GC-FID, GC-TCD and GC-MS were used. The experiments were carried out on sterilised and bioactive samples by adding pure metals and metal salts (chloride, nitrate, oxalate, acetic, penicillaminic, methioninic and cysteinic). Except for sterilised HgCl2, methylated derivatives of Sn, Pb and Hg were produced only from bioactive sediments, and therefore higher yields were measured when nutrients were added to the sediments. Volatile products (CH4, CO2, H2S) of biological activity range between 35 and 250 mg l-. The correlation of methylation yield with organic sediment index (OSI), determined as the wt% product of [organic carbon] × [organic nitrogen], is positive for all the metals and metal salts added in the sediments. Methylation yields for Hg are found to be four orders of magnitude higher than those of Pb and Sn. In low OSI (terrestrial) sediments, the rate of Hg-methylation is higher than those of Pb and Sn. In high OSI (marine) sediments, where methylation of most of the contained Hg has taken place, methylation of Pb is slightly faster than Sn.

    Notes: Abstract Tin diselenide single crystals were grown by direct synthesis using the Bridgman technique and were subsequently purified by successive recrystallizations. An X-ray powder diffraction study verified that the crystals obtained belong to the D 3d 3 — P¯3m1 space group with lattice parameters a=0.3811 nm and c=0.6137 nm. A stoichiometric analysis gave a maximum deviation of their nominal SnSe2 composition of ∼ 4%. Study of their morphology by scanning electron microscopy reveals the layered-type structure of the obtained material. Finally, the microhardness parallel and perpendicular to the layer planes was found to be strongly anisotropic, as expected from the layered structure of SnSe2.

    Notes: Abstract The optical properties of the layered compound SnS2 have been studied. Reflectivity spectra were measured at room temperature, in the energy region 1.8–5.6 eV. Optical transmission measurements were carried out in the temperature range 13–300 K, in order to evaluate the energy gaps and their temperature dependences. The spectra of the optical constantsn, κ, ɛ1 and ɛ2 versus photon energyhν have also been presented.
