    Notes: A 1-D model, which neglects radial variations, describes the hydrodynamics of cell-free ultrafiltration hollow-fiber bioreactors (HFBRs) and the transport of highmolecular-weight proteins trapped in the extracapillary space (ECS). The profiles of radially-averaged protein concentrations predicted by this model are identical to those obtained using a model with radial variations. The model predictions agree well with axial profiles of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and human transferrin concentrations measured in transient and steady-state experiments. The validated model explores the influence of cell culture operating conditions on HFBR protein transport. Increasing protein loading decreases BSA and transferrin polarization in HFBRs operated with unidirectional lumen flow. A relationship developed predicts the protein loading needed to ensure a nonzero steady-state protein concentration throughout the ECS. This critical protein loading depends only on the lumen pressure drop and the ECS protein osmotic pressure. Periodic reversal of the lumen flow direction also decreases protein polarization. The influence of the flow-direction switching time and membrane permeability on the ECS protein distribution is investigated.

    Notes: A mathematical model of mass transport through dispersed-phase networks to be used for the sustained release of drugs or other solutes at steady rates is presented. The drug is assumed to be encapsulated within the dispersed microdomains and transported to the bulk by diffusion across the interface. A drug is released to the surroundings by diffusion through the bulk. The results show that the desired steady flux of a drug to the surroundings may be obtained given appropriate values of structural properties of the network. These properties may be manipulated easily in the fabrication of dispersed-phase networks reported previously.

    Notes: This article describes the synthesis of a novel chiral surfactant based on (R,R)-tartaric acid. (R,R)-Tartaric acid is acetylated while simultaneously forming a cyclic anhydride, which is then reacted with n-decylamine forming a chiral, long chain carboxylic acid. This carboxylic acid is then further reacted with the achiral amino acid taurine forming the required surfactant which has a sulfonic acid headgroup. Evidence for its surface activity and an estimate of its critical micelle concentration (cmc) have been obtained using surface tension measurements and conductivity. The surfactant has then been used as the additive in micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC) to achieve chiral separations of compounds with multiple aromatic functionality. These separations are compared with those achieved with previously reported tartaric acid based surfactants which show a difference in selectivity. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Numerous abnormal metabolites were identified in large amounts in the urine of hypoglycin-treated rats using capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry-computer analysis. These metabolites are not detectable in significant amounts in normal rats' urine. Ten of them have not been previously associated with hypoglycin administration: these are several hydroxy compounds, including those from the valine and isoleucine pathways, 2-oxo-adipic acid, n-butyrylglycine and isovaleryl glucuronide. These results indicate that the pathways of isoleucine and valine netabolism are inhibited at their respective acyl-CoA dehydrogenation steps, as is the case for fatty acid, leucine and lysine metabolism, as previously shown. The mass spectra of the trimethylsilyl derivatives of cis, cis-4,7-decadiene-1,10-dioic, cis-4-decene-1,10-dioic, cis-4-octene-1,8-dioic acids, and (methylenecyclopropyl)acetylglycine, which were previously identified using nuclear magnetic resonance and oxidative cleavage or acid hydrolysis, are presented for the first time.

    Notes: Standard test methods ASTM D-651 for determining tensile properties and ASTM D-790 for flexure properties are evaluated. Heterogeneous fiber distributions due to molding flow conditions are shown to yield test specimens wherein fiber orientation near surfaces is highly collimated while orientations in central regions are oriented approximately transverse to the specimen axis. In addition, the converging and diverging flow fields in the dog bone (ASTM D-651) specimen with end gate are shown to yield a variation in fiber orientation along the specimen length. Finite element analysis of the dog bone (ASTM D-651) reveals that stress concentrations and a non-uniform stress distribution are introduced due to the required gripping arrangement of the test standard. The flexural specimen is decomposed into two elements of a collimated and transverse fiber orientations and a mathematical model is developed which reflects the composite behavior of the beam specimen. Finally, it is concluded that the D-651 and D-790 test methods do not reveal intrinsic design data for fiber reinforced molding materials.

    Notes: The behavior of polymeric materials reinforced by discontinuous. Descriptors for the planar and axial orientation distributions are discussed. Predictions of micromechanical models and experimental data are presented to illustrate the influence of orientation state upon elastic constants, thermal coefficients of expansion and tensile strength. Results are presented for the notched strength and compressive creep behavior of the glass/phenolic composite of two orientation states. Finally, the implications of these results upon the design of elements molded of discontinuous fiber composites are discussed.
