Notes: Abstract Two representations of the extended gamma functions Γ $$_{0,2}^{2,0}$$ [(b,x)] are proved. These representations are exploited to find a transformation relation between two Fox's H-functions. These results are used to solve Fox's H-function in terms of Meijer's G-function for certain values of the parameters. A closed form representation of the kernel of the Bessel type integral transform is also proved.

Notes: Abstract A closed-form model for the computation of temperature distribution in an infinitely extended isotropic body with a time-dependent moving-line-heat sources is discussed. The temperature solutions are presented for the sources of the forms: (i) $$\dot Q_1 (t) = \dot Q_0 \exp ( - \lambda t)$$ , (ii) $$\dot Q_2 (t) = \dot Q_0 (t/t^ \star )\exp ( - \lambda t)$$ , and $$\dot Q_3 (t) = \dot Q_0 [1 + a\cos (\omega t)]$$ , whereλ andω are real parameters andt⋆ characterizes the limiting time. The reduced (or dimensionless) temperature solutions are presented in terms of the generalized representation of an incomplete gamma function Γ (α,x;b) and its decompositionsC Γ andS Γ. It is also demonstrated that the present analysis covers the classical temperature solution of a constant strength source under quasi-steady-state situations.

Notes: Abstract A closed-form model for the computation of temperature distribution in an infinitely extended isotropic body with a time-dependent moving-heat sources is discussed. The temperature solutions are presented for the sources of the forms: (i) 01(t)=0 exp(−λt), (ii) 02(t) =0(t/t *)exp(−λt), and 03(t)=0[1+a cos(ωt)], where λ and ω are real parameters and t * characterizes the limiting time. The solutions are presented for moving, -point, -line, and -plane heat sources. Notes: Abstract A method involving denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was developed to detect mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) polymorphisms in human peripheral T-lymphocytes. DGGE analysis of 100- to 200-bp sequences of low melting temperature domains within the origin/membrane attachment site, NADH dehydrogenase subunit I, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and two overlapping regions of the tRNA glycine/NADH dehydrogenase subunit III sequences was performed to identify sequence variants at these sites in a human B-cell line TK6 and T-cells from four individuals. A T → C transition at position 16519 in the origin/membrane attachment site in the TK6 cell line and the T-cells from one individual was found. A sequence variant resulting in a G → A transition at position 9966 in the tRNA glycine/NADH dehydrogenase III was identified in another individual. This method should be useful for the rapid screening of polymorphisms in a large number of samples.

Notes: Abstract This paper introduces the concept of a bottleneck in lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus) in South Asia and then reviews its rupture. South Asia is the largest lentil growing region in the world and where indigenous lentils show a marked lack of variability. This results from its introduction from Afghanistan around 2000 B.C. and it limits breeding progress. Three approaches to widening the genetic base in the region have been tried, namely plant introduction, hybridization and mutation breeding. Introductions from West Asia flower as indigenous material matures. The asynchrony in flowering has isolated the local pilosae ecotype reproductively. However, the introduction of ILL 4605, an early, large-seeded line, has resulted in its release as ‘Manserha 89’ for wetter areas of Pakistan and its widespread use as a parent in breeding programs in the region. Hybridization between pilosae and exotic germplasm, primarily at International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) followed by selection in the sub-continent has resulted in cultivars with improved disease resistance and yield in Bangladesh and Pakistan. Mutation breeding has given new morphological markers and several promising lines. These examples illustrate not only the widening of the genetic base of the lentil in South Asia, but also the evolution of a breeding program of an international center and national programs targeted toward specific adaptation.

Notes: Abstract A sensitive radiochemical procedure has been developed for the separation and determination of Dy, Sm, Gd, Eu, La and Lu in high purity uranium. The method is based on quantitative extraction of uranium using NPy/benzene as an extractant from 7M HCl solution. Rare earth elements (REE) remaining in the aqueous phase were subsequently determined by INAA.
