Notes: Abstract A method involving denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was developed to detect mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) polymorphisms in human peripheral T-lymphocytes. DGGE analysis of 100- to 200-bp sequences of low melting temperature domains within the origin/membrane attachment site, NADH dehydrogenase subunit I, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and two overlapping regions of the tRNA glycine/NADH dehydrogenase subunit III sequences was performed to identify sequence variants at these sites in a human B-cell line TK6 and T-cells from four individuals. A T → C transition at position 16519 in the origin/membrane attachment site in the TK6 cell line and the T-cells from one individual was found. A sequence variant resulting in a G → A transition at position 9966 in the tRNA glycine/NADH dehydrogenase III was identified in another individual. This method should be useful for the rapid screening of polymorphisms in a large number of samples.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Betrag an freigesetzter Wärme in einem Volumenbereich, dessen Ausdehnung vernachlässigbar ist gegenüber den Abmessungen des interessierenden Umgebungsbietes, läßt sich wie folgt klassifizieren: (i) punktförmige Wärmequelle, (ii) Linienquelle und (iii) ebene Wärmequelle.
Notes: Abstract The amount of heat released in a volume whose extent can be ignored as compared with the dimensions of the surroundings of interest, may be classified as (i) the point-heat source, (ii) the line-heat source, and (iii) the plane-heat source. The temperature solutions of these transient conduction problems in an extended, homogeneous, and isotropic medium, are discussed in closed form. These analytical solutions are presented for the case of time-dependent, continuously operating heat source of the form $$\dot Q$$ , wherev is a positive real number. The dimensionless temperature solutions for all the problems are presented in terms of the Whittaker function. It is found that the present analysis covers well known (classical) solutions as well as some new solutions.

Notes: Summary A theoretical investigation is made on the nonlinear relativistic excitation of an electrostatic electron plasma wave at the beat frequency of two high-power colinear laser beams in a hot, homogeneous and magnetized plasma. The relativistic Vlasov equation expressed in gyrokinetic variables has been employed to find the nonlinear response of the magnetized plasma electrons. It is noted that the power density associated with the excited beat wave is much higher for the relativistic consideration than that for the nonrelativistic consideration.

Notes: The effect of ionizing radiations on starch and its fractions isolated from two varieties of irradiated Pakistani rice are reported in this paper. As the radiation dose was increased, the absolute density of the starch granules and gelatinization temperature of the starch were decreased. The iodine binding capacity, the β-amylolysis limit and the average chain length of the starch amyloses were decreased by radiation treatment which suggested that degradation of the molecule had taken place. The iodine binding capacity and the β-amylolysis limit of the starch amylopectins were increased as a result of radiation treatment.

Notes: The effect of gamma-rays on the gelatinization, pasting and hydration characteristics of two Pakistani rice varieties (Basmati-370 and Irripak) were studied up to 250 krad. A decrease in pasting viscosities in the Brabender Amylograph has been observed, which was suggestive of depolymerization of starch with the increase in irradiation dose. Similar decreases in gelatinization temperatures and times for both the rice varieties were observed. The starch-iodine blue values and swelling numbers also showed a relative decrease with the increase in irradiation dose. All the characteristics studied showed effects of irradiation. The water uptake values at 77°C were also affected. Conclusions concerning the mechanism of hydration characteristics of rice are drawn from the relationship that has been shown between rice samples and irradiation dose.

Notes: Using conductance and capacitance data for metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structures on n-type β-SiC, the density of states at the β-SiC/SiO2 interface, their location in the bandgap of β-SiC, and the electron capture probability are obtained. The MOS structures were fabricated by oxidizing β-SiC in wet oxygen. It is found that interface-state density of the order of 1011 states/(cm2-eV) is located between 0.28–0.40 eV below the conduction-band edge of β-SiC. The electron-capture probability is in the range from 4.2×10−9 to 8.4×10−8 cm3/s. This study shows that the electrical properties of β-SiC MOS structures are similar to that of Si MOS structures.

Notes: It is shown that an electrostatic wave near the upper-hybrid resonance frequency can parametrically excite extraordinary (X-) mode radiation accompanied by a great variety of low-frequency oscillations. The latter may include the lower-hybrid, the electron-acoustic, the ion-cyclotron, and the shear Alfvén waves. Nonlinear dispersion relations and the growth rates are obtained for each case. Comparison of our investigation to an earlier work and its possible application to space plasmas are pointed out.

Notes: Epitaxial β-SiC films have been produced on Si(100) substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) with 90% of the carbon supplied by methane and 10% by propane as compared to 100% by propane (or 100% by any carbon source more reactive than methane). These films, grown at 1350 °C in a CVD reactor, are single crystalline with a three-dimensional surface morphology and have similar growth rates but lower carrier concentrations than films grown from propane and silane. The interplay of the chemistry of methane and evaporative loss of the Si substrate at ∼1100–1300 °C provide a reasonable explanation of our observations.
