Notes: Abstract Carbaryl (1-naphthyl N-methylcarbamate) is a synthetic organic insecticide that is used to control grasshopper infestations on rangeland and cropland throughout the western United States. This research investigated the effects of two rangeland aerial applications of a formulation of carbaryl known as Sevin-4-Oil® on fish and aquatic invertebrates in the Little Missouri River, North Dakota. Pesticide drift was deposited in the Little Missouri River despite a 152 m no-spray buffer zone. Maximum mean carbaryl concentrations during a drought year (1991) and a non-drought year (1993) were 85.1 and 12.6 μg/L, respectively, and occurred within 2 h of application. Aquatic invertebrates were affected by pesticide application during 1991. That year, invertebrate drift at an impact site on day of pesticide application was more variable than at a reference site. Variability was attributed to increased drift of Ephemeroptera within three hours of pesticide application. Simultaneous monitoring of brain acetylcholinesterase activity of flathead chub (Platygobio gracilis) showed that fish were not affected by pesticide application. Similar studies conducted during 1993 gave no indication of adverse effects. Because this was an unreplicated field experiment, arguments for or against causation are presented using rigorous standards of proof based on Koch's postulates, and concordance of laboratory and field data. The results suggest that although pesticide application probably caused an increase in invertebrate drift during 1991, the observed response was not biologically significant because invertebrates were affected to a greater extent by natural events, and a relatively small portion of the Little Missouri River was impacted.

Notes: The rheological properties of hydrophobic alkali-soluble associative polymers (HASE) were studied using controlled rate (Mettler LS40) and controlled stress (TA CSL 500) rheometers. The effects of pH and polymer concentrations on the rheological properties of three HASE model polymer systems (i.e., HASE 5141, 5134, and 5142, with a degree of ethoxylation of 2.5, 10, and 40 mol, respectively) and a reference polymer without associative hydrophobes (MAAEA) were examined. As the pH is increased by addition of ammonia to greater than 5-6, the carboxyl groups ionize to carboxylate ions and the polymers become water soluble. The HASE polymers thicken mainly by hydrophobic association. Viscosity can increase by two to three orders of magnitude as pH is raised to 9. The degree of ethoxylation in the macromonomer controls the nature of the hydrophobic association junctions by altering the flexibility and hydrophobicity of the macromonomer. Optimum thickening efficiency is observed in the system with approximately 10 mol of an ethylene-oxide spacer between the polymer backbone and the macromonomer. Viscoelastic study shows that the maximum thickening efficiency also corresponds to the dominant elastic property observed in the system with 10 mol of EO. All the model systems except the control system without hydrophobe exhibit strain thickening of the viscous and elastic components. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J. Polym. Sci. B Polym. Notes: The urinary excretion of 3,5-diiodotyrosine was determined in euthyroid, hypothyroid and hyperthyroid individuals using a sensitive gas chromatographic mass spectrometric assay. This involved a multi-step extraction of the amino acid from urine (mean efficiency 28±5.7%) then conversion to the N,O -diheptafluorobutyryl methyl ester. The fragmentation of the derivative is discussed. Although the mean excretions in the two pathological states were significantly different from that of euthyroid individuals (P〈0.01 in both instances) there was considerable overlap with the normal range.

Notes: The components of a gas chromatographic mass spectrometric-selected ion monitoring (SIM) assay for thyroxine (T4) in human serum are described. The internal standard for the assay was synthesized from deuterium-labelled 3,5-diiodotyrosine and 3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid. A novel method was developed for isolating the products of the coupling reaction. The results obtained by gas chromatography mass spectrometry SIM were compared with those of radioimmunoassay. The gas chromatographic mass spectrometric SIM assay would form the basis of a reference assay for T4.

Notes: The mass spectral properties of four classes of derivatives of thyronine are discussed (oxazolidinone, O-methyl oxazolidinone, O-acetyl oxazolidinone and N,O-diheptafluorobutyryl methyl ester). An assay for thyronine in human urine is described based on the N,O-diheptafluorobutyryl methyl ester. Results of To excretion in euthyroid humans were compared with those obtained previously using an assay based on the O-acetyl oxazolidinone derivative. Patients with frank hyperthyroidism had significantly higher To excretion than euthyroid subjects (2α 〈 0.002) and hypothyroid patients lower To excretions than enthyroid subjects (2α 〈 0.002). Some overlap between the two pathological ranges and the normal euthyroid range was evident.
