Notes: The temperature dependence of the refractive index of InP in the wavelength range from 1.2 to 1.6 μm has been determined. The method is based on the measurement of the transmission wavelengths of a n−/n+-InP optical demultiplexer as a function of device temperature. The refractive index of InP is found to depend linearly on temperature with a temperature coefficient between 2.3 and 1.9×10−4/K. The measured absolute value and the dispersion of the refractive index of InP are in agreement with data from the literature. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Front-illuminated PtSi–n–Si Schottky barrier photodiodes have been developed for the ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet spectral range. Their spectral responsivity was determined in the 120–500 nm spectral range by use of a cryogenic electrical substitution radiometer operated with spectrally dispersed synchrotron radiation. For wavelengths below 250 nm, the spectral responsivity is about 0.03 A/W, comparable to that of GaAsP Schottky photodiodes. Unlike the GaAsP diodes, the new PtSi–n–Si diodes have a spatially uniform response which is virtually stable after prolonged exposure to short wavelength radiation. Even after a radiant exposure of 150 mJ cm−2 at wavelength 120 nm, the relative reduction in spectral responsivity remains below 0.2%. Due to these features, this type of photodiode is a promising candidate for use as secondary detector standard in the ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet spectral ranges. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We passively Q-switched a diode-pumped Er/Yb:glass microchip laser at a 1.535 μm wavelength using semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors and demonstrated pulses as short as 1.2 ns. By varying the design parameters of the saturable absorber, the pump power, and the pump spot size, we achieved repetition rates from 300 Hz to 100 kHz with pulse energies up to 4 μJ. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract To simplify the driving conditions as well as to improve the wavelength response of multileg Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI) based on multimode interference (MMI) couplers we develop a new interpretation of these devices. Used for optical switching and for wavelength filtering, they are shown to work as active or passive integrated prisms. This analogy greatly facilitates the design of such components and simplifies the understanding of their functionality. The driving conditions of optical switches based on such multileg MZI are easility studied and will be reduced to basic active phase shifts. For wavelength filtering applications using such elements, a new design of the phased waveguide array is proposed which improves the characteristics of the filters.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Beschreibung einer Methode zur Prüfung der Durchgängigkeit von ventrikulo-atrialen Shunt-Systemen.
Notes: Summary A method is described for the evaluation of the patency of ventriculoatrial shunts. It is based on local cooling of the shunt and recording of the transported cold at a site downstream, by means of a thermosensitive device connected to a Wheatstone-bridge and a recorder.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary By using the heat clearance technique in healthy subjects the skin blood flow in the forehead, chest, upper arm, and the ball of the thumb was recorded continuously before, during, and after 20 minutes of pedal work on a bicycle ergometer (with 30, 60, and 90 watts in each case). At the same time, check was made of blood pressure, pulse rate, rectal temperature, and skin humidity (measurement of electric resistance on the chest and surface of the hand). In all parts of the experiments the skin blood flow shows a topographically differentiated behaviour, proving a functional polarity between the head and the acral parts of the body, while the chest occupies an intermediate position. In the initial phase of exercise the compensatory vasoconstriction of the skin blood vessels is not confined to the acral regions, but only there a decrease in blood flow can be measured. In all other regions the increase of blood pressure, which might have caused an increase in blood flow, is more or less compensated. In the steady state of the three stages of exertion the skin blood flow in the thumb slightly exceeds the resting value, but in the forehead and upper arm the skin blood flow shows an increase which is most clearly proportional to the extent of exertion, both in latency and steepness, and also in regard to the formation of a steady state and its level. The skin blood flow in the chest exhibits greater scattering and again occupies an intermediate position. Hence in the initial phase of exercise all regions of the skin are involved in the compensation of the circulatory system, but later on only the acral regions remain in this function. From the point of view of thermoregulation, this compensative limitation of peripheral blood flow prevents efficient participation of these regions in the increased amount of heat released during exercise. Thus, heat release at higher levels of exertion is centered in the head, the trunk and the proximal sections of the extremities. Accordingly, skin humidity in the acral areas increases only parallel to the slow development of hyperthermia caused by exertion, whereas in the trunk it increases suddenly, in the form of visible sweating. The greater the exertion, the earlier this sweating appears. During the recovery phase, heat release is again concentrated in the acral regions, as it is during rest, whereas skin blood flow in the forehead and upper arm rapidly declines, in close chronological connection with the decline in the general circulatory level.
