Notes: The extended two-particle model for statistical interactions in particle beams, developed by Jansen [Coulomb Interactions in Particle Beams (Academic, Boston, 1990)], has been refined to improve the accuracy of the predictions of the trajectory displacement effect in particle beam projection systems. The original theory was developed for probe forming systems, such as electron and ion scanning microscopes and Gaussian or shaped beam lithography systems. Fit functions are used within the theory to express part of the numerical output into explicit analytical prescriptions. These functions were found to become inaccurate for the relatively wide beams typically used in the more recently developed projection type lithography systems. New fit functions are presented which extend the applicability of the theory to the wide beams and doublet configurations used in projection systems. The Monte Carlo program MONTEC, used to verify the results of the analytical theory, has been modified as well to account for the first order space charge magnification effect. This effect could be ignored for the relatively small spots of Gaussian and shaped beam systems, but would yield a significant overestimation of the trajectory displacement effect—assumed to be identical to the remaining blur after refocusing—for the wide images used in projection type of systems. The refined analytical theory and the modified MONTEC program have been used to evaluate the impact of statistical interactions on the performance of the SCALPEL electron projection system and a hypothetical ion projection lithography system, representing a simplified model of the IMS ALG-1000 (He+) system. The analytical predictions are in good agreement with the Monte Carlo results. An estimate of the total system resolution, determined by the combined effect of statistical interactions and geometrical aberrations, indicates that maximum attainable beam current for a 0.18 μm design rule is about 25 μA for the SCALPEL and 0.2–0.3 μA for the ion projection system, leading to an ∼10× higher throughput for the former taking the difference in resist sensitivities for electrons and ions into account. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract– Offspring brain lipid development has been studied following the amino acid fortification of wheat diet fed to pregnant and lactating rats. Comparisons are made with a 13% casein diet which contains a similar quantity of protein of known high quality, with a 26% casein diet, and with a standard laboratory diet. Increased maternal energy intake was found, particularly during lactation, with protein quality improvement. Offspring of mothers receiving the unsupplemented bread diet had lower total brain cholesterol, phospholipid, cerebroside-sulfatide, and (for 4 of the 5 other diets) ganglioside-NANA levels in comparison to offspring whose mothers received the other diets. Brain cerebroside-sulfatide and cholesterol concentrations were also lower in the offspring whose mothers received the unsupplemented bread, suggesting impaired myelin formation. Phospholipid and ganglioside-NANA concentrations were not lower. Fortification of the bread diet with lysine resulted in increases in both the total levels and concentrations of cerebroside-sulfatide and cholesterol. When both lysine and threonine were added, the cerebroside-sulfatide and cholesterol levels and concentrations were similar to or greater than values for the two casein diets and the standard laboratory diet. The 26% casein diet did not result in higher lipid values than obtained with the 13% casein diet. This study demonstrates the adequacy of amino acid supplementation of a maternal cereal protein diet in allowing normal offspring brain lipid development.

Notes: Instant bean powders were prepared by roasting navy beans in a bed of salt at 190°C for 20 set or 220°C for 10 set follpwed by grinding in a Wiley Mill. The powders were evaluated for antitrypsin activity and for relative protein value (RPV). The RPV's of methionine-supplemente.d and unsupplemented samples were superior to casein and equal to 110% and 60% of the RPV of casein, respectively. The heat treatment destroyed 70-80% of the antitrypsin activity originally present. Potential applications of the dry heat process are discussed.

Notes: A study was conducted to compare four school food preparation and delivery systems regarding microbiological content of foods as indicative of potential food safety hazards. Food samples were collected along the preparation and delivery line of each of 10 menu items from 16 total schools representing the four food preparation and delivery systems. Schools and systems were compared on the basis of statistically significant differences in aerobic plate count and relative frequency of improper food temperature and objectionably high indicator bacteria counts. Food preparation and handling abuse was a characteristic of individual schools and was not uniquely characteristic of any particular food preparation and delivery system or systems.

Notes: Full fat soy flour was made by roasting whole soybeans in a heated agitated salt bed followed by dehulling and grinding. PER's of 2.11–2.31 compared to 2.50 for reference casein were achieved with roasting bed temperatures of 206–234°C and treatment times of 15–24 sec. The process reduced the level of anti-trypsin activity 75–90% under these roasting conditions. The results demonstrate the utility of this dry heat process in making full-fat soy flour with a high protein quality. The potential advantages of the process in developing countries are discussed.

Notes: A nutritional evaluation was carried out on corn or sorghum blended with soy or cottonseed and processed using a Brady Crop Cooker. Protein efficiency ratios (PER's) and levels of antitrypsin activity and free or bound gossypol were determined. The extrusion process inactivated 52% of antitrypsin activity and resulted in a full-fat soy flour with corrected PER of 2.0 (casein = 2.5). The PER's for extruded corn-soy blends (CSB) were comparable to casein. Extrusion reduced free gossypol 68% and yielded a corrected PER for glanded cottonseed for 1.9. However, the PER's of extruded cereal-cottonseed blends were significantly inferior to CSB, especially at higher extrusion temperatures. The results suggest the utility of this extrusion system in producing low-cost nutritious blended foods for use in supplemental feeding programs.

Notes: Abstract Light of wavelengths in the range 400–500 nm induces germination of seeds of Lactuca sativa L. (cv. Noran and May Queen) when made light requiring by high temperature (thermodormancy) or prolonged exposure to far red light (far red dormancy). TD seeds proved more sensitive to blue light than FRD seeds by several orders of magnitude. Blue induced germination could be reversed by far red. Fluence response curves for this reversion are less steep for TD than for FRD seeds. The degree of germination of TD seeds after moderate doses of blue light is decreased by dark storage at 22° C or by exposure to far red and this is accompanied by a marked change in the shape of the fluence response curves. In these respects, germination induction by blue resembles that by red light. Continuous exposure to blue light inhibits germination of TD seeds but hardly that of FRD seeds. An action spectrum is given for blue induced germination of TD seeds.

Notes: Abstract We report a 49-year-old woman with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). In addition to typical high-signal lesions on proton-density and T 2-weighted images there was high signal in the globus pallidus bilaterally on T 1-weighted images. The latter feature has not been described previously and probably due to deposition of prion protein, as found at autopsy.
