Notes: Thirty-three women in preterm labour were randomised in a double-blind fashion to receive either transdermal nitroglycerin (n= 17) or placebo (n= 16). Both groups had significant (P 〈 0.001) change in the cervix prior to randomisation. The primary outcome measure was delivery within 48 hours of randomisation. Fewer women randomised to nitroglycerin treatment (6/17) were delivered within 48 hours, compared with the placebo treatment (10/16) (RR 0.56, 95% CI 0–27 to 1.19). This pilot study lends support to two case series published that suggest that transdermal nitroglycerin may be promising as a safe, effective means for tocolysis.

Notes: This paper outlines the first part of a longitudinal study exploring strategic alliances as central mechanisms of inter-firm cooperation in the Australian telecommunications sector. It reports on the collaboration practices of the three carriers - Telecom, Optus and Vodafone - and their first-tier "partners". The Australian telecommunications industry is a useful site for theory testing and development because of its degree of business concentration, the strategic relationships and networks involved and the role of government in encouraging alliances and networks, especially since the move away from a single government-owned monopoly-carrier environment. The recent proliferation of interorganisational alliances means we need new approaches to understanding and a move away from simple assumptions about complex organizational structures and processes. Neither is the current superficial rhetoric promoting such arrangements as the answer to industry ills adequate. Conseqently, the present study aims to enhance more complex understanding of how such structural arrangements actually work - how they are formed, organized and managed over time. The study methodology centres on analysis of research and in-depth interviews with key industry and government executives. Proposed extensions of the present work involve a detailed communications industry survey and network analysis of relationships, with a special focus on relationships growing in the convergence of the telecommunications, entertainment, computing and media industries. When quotations from study participants are used, sources are generally not acknowledged in an endeavour to keep as much anonymity as possible.

Notes: [Auszug] Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is the leading neoplasm of AIDS patients, and HIV infection is known to be a major risk factor for its development1,2. However, KS can occur in the absence of HIV infection3–5 and the risk of KS development varies widely even among HIV–infected patients, with ...

Notes: Abstract Laminin, neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) and the neurotrophins, ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) play important roles in the formation and maintenance of the axons and dendrites of vertebrate neurons. The conventional explanation of the action of N-CAM and laminin has been that they provide suitable substrata on which the cells can adhere, spread and extend. We show by applying these molecules immobilised to small beads (tethered) that they activate adhesion and cell extension on substrata where no special adhesion molecules have been placed. This activation occurs even when the beads are attached to the side of the cell not in contact with the substratum, implying that the signal is transduced to activate parts of the cell remote from the vicinity of the bead.

Notes: Abstract This study analyzes the impact of demographic, socioeconomic, and financial factors on the enrollmentbehavior of accepted college applicants. The receipt offinancial aid had a positive impact on the enrollment decisions of accepted applicants. For every$1,000 increase in the amount of aid offered, theprobability of enrollment increased between 1.1% and2.5%. Grants and loans had the expected positive impact on enrollment, but work study did not enticeprospective students unless it was packaged with somegrant or loan assistance. Upper-income applicants wereless likely to enroll at this institution regardless of financial aid incentives.

Notes: A method is described which will rapidly measure the binding of avian tumor viruses (ATV) to plasma membrane receptors. With this procedure it may be shown that Rous sarcoma virus pseudotypes bind to protease-labile, heat-stable structures on the surface of chicken embryo fibroblast (CEF) plasma membranes. The binding sites for ATV subgroups A and B appear distinct, and membranes from genetically resistant CEF bind as well those of sensitive CEF.
