Notes: Our findings concerning changes in steroid receptor activation, cell kinetics and tumor growth during progression of human endometrial adenocarcinomas heterotransplanted into nude mice were reviewed. We found several major changes during the course of progression of these tumors. Such alterations as changes in estrogen receptor function, post-receptor changes and intratumor endocrine interactions were identified. Our results suggest moreover, that development of these alterations is probably genetically determined though some of the changes may be modified by the level of circulating estradiol concentrations. Through influenced tumor progression, the level of circulating estradiol may also affect hormone treatment of human endometrial adenocarcinomas.

Notes: A large, consecutive series of 562 patients with endometrial adenocarcinomas was investigated with respect to prognostic factors. In the histopathologic evaluation the World Health Organization (WHO) classification system was used. In addition to that, in moderately differentiated (MD) tumors small areas of solid growth were identified and the proportions of these out of the whole areas of tumor (in the predominant number of cases this being less than 5%) were later determined by morphometry, showing a good accordance with the subjective estimations. Differentiated tumors with small solid areas (MD + S tumors) implied a significantly worse prognosis compared to tumors without a solid component (P 〈 0.001), which was also confirmed in a multivariate analysis. In the multivariate analysis MD+S differentiation had an independent prognostic impact, as strong as age, clinical stage and myometrial invasion. It is suggested that the occurrence of even a very small solid component is an ominous sign, the presence (or absence) of which might be an important parameter to take into consideration in the discrimination between high- and low-risk endometrial carcinomas.

Notes: Stacking of chloroplast lamellae, isolated from normal and carotenoid mutant chloroplasts of maize (Zea mays L.), was determined after a high-salt treatment.Stacking of isolated lamellae under favourable ionic conditions was almost identical with that occurring in intact chloroplasts; thus, differences in granum content could be attributed to the architectural properties of lamellae.Gaussian analyses, performed on the red band of room temperature absorption spectra, have shown that chloroplasts with lamellae of high stacking capacity contain relatively more Chl a662 than chloroplasts containing lamellae of low stacking capacity. The presence of Chl a705–708 was characteristic of preparations containing considerable amounts of stroma lamellae.

Notes: Abstract Background: Owing to the wide spread perception of a possible benefit from paclitaxel in the second-line situation the Nordic Gynecologic Oncology Group (NGOG) conducted two prospective phase II studies of paclitaxel single agent treatment (175 mg/m2, three-hour i.v. infusion with standard pre-medication every third week) in patients with relapsing or progressing epithelial ovarian cancer following platinum. Patients and methods: Between 1992–1994 138 patients in total were enrolled of whom 136 received paclitaxel and were included in the toxicity and survival analysis, while 112 were evaluable for response. Results: The overall response rate (CR + PR) was 28% with 16 patients achieving a CR (14%). The estimated median (range) time to progression was 4.1 (0.7–60.7) months. The projected four-year overall survival was 7%, with a median (range) of 9.6 (0.3–60.7) months. A multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that platinum resistance, and WHO performance status at baseline, independently correlated with survival at all three time points (median survival time 9.6, 18, and 24 months). Patients with platinum sensitive tumors and WHO performance status 0 had a median survival of 25.6 months compared to 7.0 months for the rest of the patients (P ≤ 0.0001). No serious toxicity was registered. Conclusion: Paclitaxel could safely be administered in an outpatient setting using this schedule. Patients with platinum sensitive tumors and a good performance status were most likely to survive. However, these patients are also most likely to respond to re-treatment with a platinum compound. With reference to the reasonably good tumor control and limited toxicity observed in this study, we conclude that paclitaxel single agent therapy is a viable option in the salvage situation, which in some patients can give long-lasting responses. However, although responses can be induced in a significant number of patients, the survival figures remain poor.

Notes: Abstract We demonstrate a pulse-probe method for measuring the ion-cloud rotation frequency in a Penning trap. We show that it is useful over a range of parameters not accessible to the photon correlation method of Dholakia et al. [1]. In particular, the pulse-probe method works for larger clouds than the photon-correlation method. We show that the pulse-probe method measures the space-charge-shifted frequency and gives us the optical pumping times within clouds. Furthermore, we show that, for Mg+ ions, it is capable of measuring much higher degrees of space-charge shift than the photon-correlation method. Improvements to the method may enable its use in measuring diffusion rates for ions in clouds.

Notes: Abstract North African desert ants belonging to different genera and inhabiting different areas (sand dunes, salt pans, inundation flats and gravel plains) exhibit different ways of skylight navigation: some rely especially on the polarized light in the sky, others depend more effectively on the position of the sun. Are these differences due to species- or genus-specific idiosyncrasies of the ant's skylight compass, or are they caused by differences in the overall degree of polarization prevailing in the celestial hemisphere that vaults the different kinds of habitat? Theoretically, such differences are to be expected, as various parameters known to influence the degree of polarization in the Earth's atmosphere – such as the albedo of the ground and the content of water vapour, dust and haze in the airlayers above the ground – do vary between the different types of habitat mentioned above. The first wide-field, video-polarimetric study of skylight polarization presented here clearly shows that at any particular locality the temporal (day-to-day) variations of the degree of skylight polarization are much more pronounced than the differences recorded at the same local time at different localities. In contrast, the angle of polarization is unaffected by atmospheric disturbances and accords well with the predictions of Rayleigh scattering. Consequently, differences in behavioural performances of navigating North African desert ants are due to interspecific and intergeneric differences in the ants' navigational systems rather than to general differences in the skylight stimuli experienced by the ants during navigation.

Notes: Abstract  Triacontanol, a long-chain primary alcohol was found to be an effective growth regulator in the micropropagation of balm, Melissa officinalis. In both the multiplication and the rooting phase, concentrations of 2, 5, 10 and 20 μg triacontanol per liter were applied. After 4 weeks of culture, the fresh weight of shoots was measured in the multiplication phase and root formation, photosynthetic activity, chlorophyll content and the fresh and dry weights of shoots were analyzed in the root induction phase. In the multiplication phase, 5 μg/l triacontanol was found to be the optimal concentration, while in the rooting phase 2 μg/l was the most effective. Triacontanol increased the number and length of roots, and it enhanced shoot growth, fresh weight, and the chlorophyll content, but it had no effect on the dry weight and the photosynthetic activity of the plants. Results of our work demonstrate that triacontanol can be applied as an effective growth regulator in the tissue culture of balm.

Notes: Abstract Background: During an international workshop held in September 1998, a group of specialists in the field of ovarian cancer reached consensus on a number of issues with implications for standard practice and for research of advanced epithelial ovarian cancer. Methods: Five groups of experts considered several issues which included: biologic factors, prognostic factors, surgery, initial chemotherapy, second-line treatment, the use of CA 125, investigational drugs, intra-peritoneal treatment and high-dose chemotherapy. The group attempted to arrive at answers to questions such as: Are there prognostic factors, which help to identify patients who will not do well with current therapy? What is the current best therapy for advanced ovarian carcinoma? What directions should research take in advanced ovarian cancer? These issues were discussed in a plenary meeting. Results: One of the major conclusions drawn by the consensus committee was that in previously untreated advanc ed ovarian cancer, cisplatin plus paclitaxel has been shown to be superior to previous standard therapy with cisplatin plus cyclophosphamide (level I evidence). However, for many patients, carboplatin plus paclitaxel is a reasonable alternative because of toxicity and convenience considerations. Most participants felt that the benefits in terms of toxicity for the paclitaxel-carboplatin are such that its widespread adoption at this stage is justified. Until mature survival data are available a minority of investigators would recommend continued use of cisplatin plus paclitaxel, specifically for those patients with advanced disease with the best prognostic characteristics. For future clinical research in this area, new end points for randomised clinical trials, together with a new Trials Network, are proposed.

Notes: Abstract The thermal behaviour of tetrahydroperparine (THP) and its derivatives with various acids has been investigated. The acid is liberated from the formate derivative basically in two steps, while the other aliphatic acids are released quantitatively before the thermal decomposition of the THP molecule. The thermoanalytical curves, electrical conductivity data measured in the molten phase, and infrared spectra prove that while part of the formic acid is hydrogen-bonded the other part is bound ionically in the molecule. It may be assumed that the marked biological activity of the compound can be explained by this difference in the nature of the bonds.
