Notes: Abstract In this paper, we have modified the Cooper theory by considering a biexcitonic attractive interaction for high T c superconductors. We have developed an expression for (2Δ/K B T c) as a function of phonon and biexciton mediated coupling constants. For the sake of simplicity, we use a two-square-well potential model (electron–phonon and electron–biexciton). The calculated values of (2Δ/K B T c) show good agreement with experimental values.

Notes: Abstract The nutrient intake of 69 stone formers (SFs) from three subsets of the local population (urban 22, rural tribal 22 and rural nontribal 25) and 69 age, sex, weight and socioeconomically matched control subjects (NSs) (urban 20, rural tribal 22 and rural nontribal 27) was studied. Simultaneously their timed 24-h urine samples collected over a similar period were analyzed. In general caloric and protein intake was low in all the groups but was strikingly low in the rural subjects. Intake of all nutrients was lowest in the tribal group. Although no difference was observed in diet between NSs and SFs in the same population subjects, SFs had higher urinary excretion of oxalic acid and calcium and lower excretion of citric acid and excreted more saturated urine. Notably magnesium intake was normal in both NSs and SFs, but mean excretion of magnesium was lower than normal in all the groups, suggesting its defective absorption. The influence of dietary intake of protein, carbohydrate, fat, fiber, calcium and oxalic acid on urinary excretion of calcium, oxalic acid, uric acid, inorganic phosphorus, magnesium and citric acid was examined using the chi-square test. No association was observed, thus suggesting that this low nutrient intake did not influence the lithogenic process. Thus, the overall observations suggest: (a) poor nutrition, (b) no effect of diet on urinary stone disease, (c) no difference in the nutrient intake between NSs and SFs and (d) a higher excretion of promoters and a lower excretion of inhibitors in SFs than in NSs.

Notes: The compositions and formation-constants of the complexes formed by Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) with hydrazine have been evaluated graphically following the method of Rossotti and Rossotti using the necessary data from the results of pH titration of solutions containing the metal perchlorate, hydrazinium diperchlorate and sodium perchlorate at an ionic strength of unity at 30°C. The values of the successive equilibrium constants for the protonation of hydrazine, which were also needed, have been evaluated separately by similar procedure. Even at the rather high ratio of ca. 60 of (total hydrazine)/(total metal) the highest complexes which appear to be formed in the systems investigated have the ratio of metal:hydrazine of 1:2 for Co(II) and Zn(II), while in all the other cases only 1: 1 complexes appear to exist in solution. The values of the formation-constants (at 30°C; μ = 1) obtained are: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$\begin{array}{l} \log \beta _1 :{\rm Mn(II), 4}{\rm .76; Co(II), 1}{\rm .78; Ni(II),3}{\rm .18; Cu(II),6}{\rm .67;Zn(II), 3,69}{\rm.} \\ \log \beta _2 :{\rm Co(II), 3}{\rm .34; Zn(II), 6}{\rm .69}. \\ \end{array} $$\end{document}β1 values obtained from the Bjerrum relation are in fairly good agreement with those given above except for Co(II). The limitations of Bjerrum's method are discussed.

Notes: Indium(III) and tin(IV) thiocarboxylates were prepared and characterized on the basis of their IR, 13C- and 19Sn-NMR data. Indium tris(thiobenzoate) (1) decomposes into a sulfido complex In (S)[S(O)CPh] (2a). The corresponding tris(thioacetate) In[S(O)CMe]3 is thermally too unstable to be isolated. The anionic tetrakis complex [Et3NH]{In[S(O)CPh]4} (3) was characterized by X-ray crystallography which revealed a distorted tetrahedral coordination at the In atom. X-ray diffraction analysis of the complexes BuSn[S(O)CPh]3 (4) and Cl2Sn[S(O)CPh]2 (7) showed distorted tetrahedral and cis-octahedral structures, respectively.

Notes: The coupled streamfuction-temperature equations governing the Darcian flow and convection process in a fluid-saturated porous enclosure with an isothermal sinusoidal bottom sun face, has been numerically analyzed using a finite element method (FEM). No restrictions have been imposed on the geometrical non-linearity arising from the parameters like wave amplitude (a), number of waves per unit length (N), wave phase (Φ), aspect ratio (A) and also on the flow driving parameter Rayleigh number (Ra). The numerical simulations for varying values of Ra bring about interesting flow features, like the transformation of a unicellular flow to a multicellular flow. Both with increasing amplitude and increasing number of waves per unit length, owing to the shift in the separation and reattachment points, a row-column pattern of multicellular flow transforms to a simple row of multicellular flow. A cycle of n celluar and n+1 cellular flows, with the flow in adjacent cells in the opposite direction, periodically manifest with phase varying between 0 and 360°. The global heat transfer into the system has been found to decrease with increasing amplitude and increasing number of waves per unit length. Only marginal changes in the global heat flux are observed, either with increasing Ra or varying Φ. Effectively, sinusoidal bottom surface undulations of the isothermal wall of a porous enclosure reduces the heat transfer into the system. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
