Notes: We present initial results from a new q diagnostic for TEXT-Upgrade. This method is based on using a toroidal array of detectors to determine the plane in which beam-injected neutrals are emitted after two charge exchange collisions. The potential advantages are low cost, full plasma accessibility, and good time resolution. Our initial series of experiments of TEXT-U establish the feasibility of this technique. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Radiography techniques utilizing large-area x-ray sources (typically ≤7 keV) and pinhole-imaging gated x-ray diagnostics have long been used at the Nova laser facility. However, for targets requiring higher-energy x-ray backlighters (〉9 keV), low conversion efficiencies and pinhole losses combine to make this scheme unworkable. The technique of point projection radiography has been improved upon to make imaging at high x-ray energies feasible. In this scheme a "point" source of x-rays, usually a small diameter (≤25 μm) fiber, is illuminated with a single, 100-ps pulse from the Nova laser. A gated x-ray imager with a 500-ps electronic gate width is used to record the projected image. [K. S. Budil et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 67, 485 (1996).] The experimental challenges this technique presents and experimental results will be discussed. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new approach for the analysis of partial differential equations is developed which is characterized by a simultaneous use of higher and conditional symmetries. Higher symmetries of the Schrödinger equation with an arbitrary potential are investigated. Nonlinear determining equations for potentials are solved using reductions to Weierstrass, Painlevé, and Riccati forms. Algebraic properties of higher order symmetry operators are analyzed. Combinations of higher and conditional symmetries are used to generate families of exact solutions of linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equations. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Nonlinear Brownian motion in stochastic rachets is investigated by electronic simulation methods. It is shown experimentally that it is possible to sort particles by mass using a discrete random process, binary noise, as the source of the nonequilibrium stochastic ratchets.

Notes: Abstract Some variants of the axiomatics of the algebras of “vector fields” in models of noncommutative differential geometry are considered. In the case of a commutative model (the de Rham complex) a matrix analogue of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy is constructed. The corresponding Sato system is presented. The method of deformations of D-modules is used. Bibliography: 14 titles.

Notes: Abstract We consider in the nonlinear formulation the steady-state motion of an incompressible viscous fluid between two concentric spheres, into the gap between which fluid enters through one hole and leaves through a second. The holes are replaced by a source and sink, after which the boundary conditions are written in terms of the delta function. The delta function is expanded approximately in a finite series in Legendre polynomials. Depending on the number of terms, this series represents holes of various sizes. The solution to the problem is sought by expanding the desired function in a series in powers of the Reynolds number, whose coefficients are expanded in series in associated Legendre functions of the first kind. The velocity field and also the force acting on the inner sphere are found. Numerical computations are presented for holes whose aperture half-angle is 6°.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we examine the resistance encountered by a system of normal stresses during its rectilinear motion along the surface of a viscous liquid of infinite depth. The problem is solved in the linear formulation, i.e., it is assumed that amplitudes of the waves which arise are small and the waves are shallow. The solution for the two-and three-dimensional problems is obtained in the general case in closed form. In the two-dimensional case a detailed study is made of the case when a constant pressure p0, moving with the constant velocity U, is given on a segment of length 2l. In the three-dimen-sional problem the case is studied when the normal stress is concentrated on a segment of a straight line of length 2l, which can replace a ship moving along a straight course with the constant velocity U. The integrals obtained in both cases are studied using the stationary phase method, the application of which for the three-dimensional integrals with respect to a volume with boundaries is justified in §1 of the paper. As a result we obtain equations for the wave resistance in the two- (§2) and three-dimensional (§3) cases.
