Notes: A nondestructive evaluation technique based on the detection of the real part of the excess charge carrier wave by photoluminescence in a frequency range from 5 kHz up to 12 MHz is introduced for semiconductor defect analysis. Crystalline imperfections in silicon due to wafer manufacturing and processing are investigated and the results are correlated with those obtained from conventional photothermal measurements. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Employing Mori-formalism we calculate the polaron transport of an exciton–phonon system with linear site-occupational coupling. The main feature of our approach is a consistent treatment of the memory function, which is of 2nd order in an effective "smallness parameter" appearing after a Lang–Firsov transformation has been made. The memory function is divided into a quasicoherent part, which can be interpreted as a band type motion, decreasing with increasing temperature, an incoherent part describing usual hopping dynamics and two crossterms. In contrast to previous similar approaches our results do not display any divergence problem. It is found that the two cross terms yield a small transport contribution of coherent nature, at least within the accuracy of the present approximation. Due to this term, although higher order effects may result in a damping, the transport will display coherent features for a long time. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have fabricated and characterized resonant tunneling diode pillar arrays. The array resistance switches between two stable states with a maximum room temperature current peak to valley ratio of 500:1. Both the high and the low resistance states are stable at zero bias suggesting that the device may be used for non-volatile memory storage. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In the present work we study unconventional ("squeezed'') exciton–phonon states in the trimer model. These quasifree states, which do not undergo self-trapping, are characterized by a nearly vanishing lattice distortion and a stiffening in the phonon part as well as a large amount of kinetic energy in the excitonic subsystem. In contrast, the "conventional'' exciton–phonon states are characterized by a strong lattice distortion and physically amount to a self-trapping of the exciton. In the trimer model a third type of exciton–phonon states have been found, which are a kind of "dimerized'' states, where self-trapping has taken place only partially. The different types of states are analyzed and discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Tuberous sclerosis (McKusick number: 19110) is well documented as an inheritable autosomal dominant disorder. On the occasion of results of an autopsy of a male fetus (1950 g, 29th gestational week) we report on the very early onset of a giant cell astrocytoma (microcalzified focally) and a cystic kidney disorder which in association with this phacomatosis is described first for this age. Thus, based on sonography there is a new differential diagnosis for the weighty prenatal diagnosis of a “Potter syndrome” or of “cystic kidneys”. Moreover, on a chromosomal level we discuss possible connections between tuberous sklerosis and distinct forms of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, ADPKD.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The frequency of dementia in very old subjects, the risk factors and the consequences of the disease were investigated in the Berlin Aging Study in an age- and gender-stratified design (ages 70–103 years, n=516). Psychiatrists diagnosed a dementia syndrome according to DSM-III-R, applying the GMS-A and HAS interviews. The dementia frequency steeply increases until the 90–94 year group, but there is no further exponential increase for the 95+ group – instead for men the data show a plateau of dementia prevalence. Low education level turned out to be a risk factor, which explains the gender effect in a logistic regression analysis. The apolipoprotein E4 genotype was confirmed as a risk factor – however, only for the older subjects (85+). Dementia was a major reason for institutionlization. The 2-year mortality was no higher in dementia than for age-matched non-demented controls. The results gave a detailed picture of dementia in the very old. This is a prerequisite for planning facilities for psychiatric diagnostics and therapy as well as nursing care.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Schizophrenia is a genetic complex disease as it does not follow monogenic transmission while non-familial environmental factors have a strong additional impact. A heterogenous, continuous phenotype is transmitted in families which can now be more precisely characterized. Genes coding for proteins with presumed pathophysiological relevance are apparently not playing a major causal role. However, in the last three years several (currently seven) candidate regions have been identified in a replicable manner by linkage studies. These regions are likely to host susceptibility genes for schizophrenia, but none of them has been identified up to now. Given these findings, polygenic transmission has now become very likely. The candidate regions are currently being narrowed down by various promising techniques.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A prospective study was performed to compare the sensitivity and accuracy of ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) as a bone scan to detect subclinical invasion of the mandible by squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and floor of mouth. Methods: The present study reports data on 35 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity. SPECT, mandibular orthopantomography (OPG), US, CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed as well as histologic examination of resected mandibles. Transverse slices of 12 mm thickness were reconstructed for SPECT and semiquantitative assessment of radionuclide uptake was performed with a scoring system based on comparisons of tracer uptake in the mandible to that in an unaffected part of the mandible. Lesion to non-lesion count ratios in the mandible in 3 h SPECT images were calculated. OPG, US and CT were evaluated for comparison. Results: In 12/35 patients, histologic examination showed carcinoma infiltrating mandibular bone. SPECT correctly predicted mandibular invasion in 11/12 cases, with no false-positive results. CT detected correctly 3/12 lesions, while OPG and ultrasound each demonstrated 2/12 tumors. Conclusion: Bone SPECT was found to provide an accurate means for assessing tumor invasion to the mandible by intraoral squamous cell carcinoma. As a complementary study to one of the other imaging modalities it was shown to have a high specificity, indicating that it should be performed routinely in patients with suspect mandibular bone involvement by causes.
