    Notes: Measurements are reported for the electrical dc conductivity of the semiconducting vanadium tellurite glasses containing P2O5, Sb2O3, or Bi2O3 in the temperature range 80–450 K. The experimental data have been analyzed in the light of existing theoretical models. It has been observed that the general behavior of the electrical conductivity is similar for all glass compositions. The high temperature conductivity data are consistent with Mott's models of phonon-assisted polaronic hopping in the nonadiabatic regime, while at low temperatures variable range hopping is valid. The small polaron hopping model of Schnakenberg is the best model to interpret the temperature dependence of the activation energy and the conductivity in the entire temperature range. The percolation model applied to the polaron hopping regime is also found to be consistent with the temperature dependence of the conductivity data at high and low temperatures. The various parameters obtained by fitting these models to the experimental data are found to depend on glass forming oxides other than the vanadium oxide. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The dielectric properties of the PbO–Fe2O3 glassy system are reported in the frequency range 102–106 Hz and in the temperature range 300–500 K. The experimental data have been analyzed in the light of the dipolar relaxation model. It is observed that this model is consistent with the frequency and temperature dependence of the complex dielectric constant. The network former PbO influences strongly the dielectric properties, yielding large values of static and high-frequency dielectric constants and a narrow distribution of relaxation times. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We raised a strain of Leishmania donovani in the laboratory that was resistant to 500 nM taxol. The IC50 of the wild-type strain for taxol was 35 nM and that of the taxol-resistant strain (T-500) was 1 μM. The T-500 strain exhibited a Mdr phenotype; it was also resistant to other unrelated drugs like vinblastine, adriamycin and the commonly used antimonial drugs pentostam and glucantime. Verapamil (20 nM), a calcium channel blocker, was found to reverse the resistance of T-500 to taxol. Acquired resistance to taxol has been reported to be mediated by alterations involving tubulin in cancer cells. Thus polymerisation assays with tubulin fractions in wild-type versus taxol-resistant cells (T-500) were performed in vitro. The tubulin fraction from T-500 was more resistant to in vitro polymerisation than the tubulin isolated from the wild-type, suggesting that this is one means by which the parasite may acquire resistance to taxol.

    Notes: Abstract: The solutions of a renormalized BCS equation are studied in three space dimensions in s, p and d waves for finite-range separable potentials in the weak to medium coupling region. In the weak-coupling limit, the present BCS model yields a small coherence length and a large critical temperature, , appropriate for some high- materials. The BCS gap, , and specific heat as a function of zero-temperature condensation energy are found to exhibit potential-independent universal scalings. The entropy, specific heat, spin susceptibility and penetration depth as a function of temperature exhibit universal scaling below in p and d waves.

    Notes: Abstract  High-quality nonlocal density functional calculations have been carried out on the deformability of Fe(II)CO and Fe(III)CN units in model compounds of heme proteins. The results confirm our previous finding with a local functional that the Fe(II)CO unit is significantly deformable with respect to tilting and bending. This deformability stems in large part from a large, negative interaction constant between the FeC tilt and FeCO bend coordinates. The Fe(III)CN unit is also significantly deformable, but in this case the deformability results from a very small Fe(III)CN bend force constant and the ability of the cyano nitrogen to act as a hydrogen bond acceptor. The prediction that the energetic penalty associated with deforming the Fe(II)CO unit is relatively modest indicates that such deformations are unlikely to be the dominant contributor to myoglobin's discrimation against CO in favor of O2.

    Notes: Abstract We report here the occurrence of, to date, the largest (21 × 10 × 8 mm) phillipsite crystal forming the nucleus of a diagenetically formed ferromanganese nodule from the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB). Assuming an average rate of ferromanganese nodule accretion as ~ 2 mm/Ma and that of phillipsite growth as ~ 0.65 mm/Ka, the nucleus material appears to have been growing for ~4.5–5 Ma. Originally surfaced as a rock fragment from late Miocene volcanism, this nucleus was later altered to phillipsite under alkaline, silica-undersaturated, low-temperature conditions through the length of the Neogene sedimentary hiatus.

    Notes: Summary Nucleotide sequences of rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV) genome segment 9 (S9) from a Thai and an Indian isolate were determined. Both sequences are 1132 bp long, contain a single large open reading frame (ORF) spanning nucleotide residues 14 to 1027 and are capable of encoding a protein of 38.5K. The two isolates are 94.6% and 99.4% identical at the nucleotide and amino acid level, respectively. The authenticity of these coding sequences was confirmed by identifying a ∼38K protein in the RRSV particle with an N-terminal amino acid sequence identical to that inferred from the S9 ORF. Furthermore, cDNA of S9 from each isolate incorporated into the bacterial expression vector pGEX3-X produced a fusion protein that reacted with antibodies raised against purified RRSV particles. Cleaving these fusion proteins with protease factor X liberated a ∼38K polypeptide.

    Notes: Abstract The role of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) as etiologic agents of diarrhoea in infants aged less than six months was assessed in a hospital based study in Calcutta, India. Of the 218 cases examined, ETEC strains were isolated from 26 (11.9%) cases. Among these, in 17 cases ETEC was the sole infecting pathogen (p = 0.0085). Of the 26 isolates (each isolate representing a case), 24 were distributed among seven different O:K:H serotypes and two different colonization factor antigens (CFAs) I and II. Two of the remaining isolation were untypable, non-haemagglutinating, and were nonhydrophobic as measured by the salt aggregation test (SAT). Of the 26 ETEC strains detected, 15 (57.7%) produced heat-labile toxin (LT) only, 8 (30.8%) liberated heat-stable toxin (ST) only, and the remaining 3 (11.5%) produced both LT and ST. No ETEC strain was isolated from the 102 age-matched controls included in this study. All the ETEC isolates were multiple drug resistant. The study showed that the diarrhoea due to ETEC was of brief duration, mostly within the range of 3 to 7 days.
