Notes: Abstract A study of 13 male opiate addicts was undertaken to investigate the feasibility of transferring abruptly from methadone maintenance treatment to buprenorphine in an outpatient setting. The mean age of subjects was 30 years (range 18-45) and all fulfilled DSM-III-R criteria for opioid dependence. All were maintained on a methadone dose of 20-30 mg mixture daily and were transferred for 3 days to 4 mg buprenorphine sublingually 24-26 hours after their last dose of methadone. On day 1 repeated measures of drug effects were performed, including agonist and withdrawal effects, and this was complemented by saccadic eye movements, a potential new measure of central opioid effects. These recordings were repeated once on days 2 and 3 and the subjects returned to their previous dose of methadone on day 4. Buprenorphine caused no detectable agonist effects or drug “high”, but had “good” effects, was “liked” and well tolerated, suggesting that subjects would comply with buprenorphine treatment despite the lack of reinforcing effects. A mild increase in subjective withdrawal symptoms, which was not clinically significant, was seen in association with an increase in saccadic peak velocity on day 2 of the study but no withdrawal occurred on the other days, indicating that the abrupt transfer technique was acceptable.

Notes: The article is based on research carried out in 1995 on a sample of UK-based retailers that were involved in international joint ventures and international buying alliances. The research identified the differences and comparison between these forms of alliances in terms of the competencies and skills that were being transferred between members of the alliances. The findings suggest that joint venture relationships appear to be closer and of a more strategic nature in achieving competitive advantage than buying alliances. Joint ventures appear to make a greater contribution to product strategy and learning than do alliances. However, little difference was found between the two alliance forms in terms of skill transfers.

Notes: A fungus with morphological features corresponding to the group species Colletorichum gloeosporioides was consistently isolated from cassava with shoots showing dieback symptoms in Ghana. When four locally-grown cultivars were inoculated with isolates of the fungus, they developed disease symptoms, which consisted of discrete dark brown lesions on the stems followed by defoliation. Koch's postulates were completed by re-isolating the fungus from the inoculated plants. The relatedness of the isolates lo other members of the genus Calletotrichum, whose identities were well established, was investigated by comparison of the nucleotide sequence of domain 2 of their ribosomal DNA. The cassava isolates differed from authentic isolates of C. gloeosporioides by only one nucleotide among the 193 analysed. The causal agent of cassava stem tip dieback (STDB) is thus identified as a form of C. gloeosporioides.

Notes: [Auszug] Dean Hamer's 1993 report of linkage between X chromosomal markers and male sexual orientation1–2 has surely inspired more controversy than any other linkage finding to date. Some gay individuals were delighted that the finding seemed to confirm intuitions that their sexuality reflected innate ...

Notes: [Auszug] Knowledge of the complete genomic DNA sequence of an organism allows a systematic approach to defining its genetic components. The genomic sequence provides access to the complete structures of all genes, including those without known function, their control elements, and, by inference, the ...

Notes: Abstract This paper describes a new algorithm of the Consolidated Fire Growth and Smoke Transport (CFAST) fire model and compares the results with data from real-scale fire tests conducted aboard the ex-USS Shadwell, the U.S. Navy's Research and Development Damage Control Platform. The new phenomenon modeled in this work is the conduction of heat in the vertical direction. The Shadwell tests chosen for validation purposes were part of the Internal Ship Conflagration Control (ISCC) Program. The work focuses on four compartments of the ship that were vertically aligned. The temperatures of the compartments and the decks between them were compared with model predictions. The predictions were very close to the experimental results for all compartments, although the temperatures rise in the topmost compartment was barely above ambient.

Notes: Abstract Two fluorometric assays for the determination of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) inside intact cells are presented in this paper, a spectrofluorometric method and one based on a laser flow cytometer. The principles of these assays are given, and the results of these methods are compared with those of a gas chromatographic assay. All assays were used for the monitoring of batch cultivations of Alcaligenes eutrophus. The correlation between all methods was very good; however, the fluorometric analysis was the fastest while the cytometric assay gave a direct insight into the PHB distribution over the population.
