    Notes: Two-dimensional numerical simulations of laminar natural convection in a partially cooled, differentially heated inclined cavities are performed. One of the cavity walls is entirely heated to a uniformly high temperature (heat source) while the opposite wall is partially cooled to a lower temperature (heat sink). The remaining walls are adiabatic. The tilt angle of the cavity is varied from 0° (heated from left) to -90° (heated from top). The fast false implicit transient scheme (FITS) algorithm, developed earlier by the same authors, is modified to solve the derived variables vorticity-streamfunction formulation. The effects of aspect ratio (AR), sink-source ratio and tilt angle on the average Nusselt number are examined through a parametric study; solutions are obtained for two Grashof numbers, 105 and 107. Flow patterns and isotherms are used to investigate the heat transfer and fluid flow mechanisms inside the cavity. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: This paper presents an improved approximation technique for gradient based approximation methods of mathematical programming. The proposed technique prevents oscillations of the sequence of approximate solutions in the optimization process efficiently and preserves the relatively simple form of the approximating functions. The improvement is achieved by adding an appropriate convex term to each conventional approximating function. The theory is illustrated with several numerical examples. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: This paper describes an approach to shape optimal design of elastic planar frames with non-linear response. The foundation of the proposed approach forms an appropriate strategy of shape representation of the structure, based on the design element technique. A frame structure is treated as to be assembled from several frame design elements, which in turn may consist of several appropriately joined beam finite elements. The shape of each frame design element is defined by convenient functions involving Bezier blending polynomials. The original formulation of the beam finite element, proposed by Saje, is modified in order to fit nicely into the context of the frame design element technique. The formulation of the shape optimal design problem in a form of a problem of non-linear mathematical programming and its solution by employing gradient-based methods of mathematical programming are discussed briefly. The theory is illustrated with two numerical examples.

    Notes: We study the limit behaviour of solution of Poisson's equation in a class of thin two-dimensional domains, both simply connected or single-hollowed, as its thickness becomes very small. The method is based on a transformation of the original problem into another posed on a fixed domain, obtention of a priori estimates and convergence results when thickness parameter tends to zero. As an important application of abstract results we obtain the limit expressions for functions appearing in elastic beam theories as torsion and warping functions. In this way, we provide a mathematical justification and a correct definition of torsion, warping and Timoshenko functions and constants that should be used in the open and closed thin-walled elastic beam theories. © 1998 by B.     Notes: The integral transform method is employed in the analytical solution of the non-classical eigenvalue problem that appears in connection with the analysis of forced convection in ducts, including the effect of fluid heat diffusion in the axial direction. The related eigenfunctions are expanded in terms of eigenfunctions from a simpler auxiliary eigenvalue problem, and the original eigenvalues are determined from the associated matrix eigensystem analysis. Convergence rates of the proposed solutions are illustrated and reference results established for different values of the governing parameters.

    Notes: The suitability of the transmission line modelling method for studying field-particle interaction devices is assessed through an example of a simple two-cavity klystron amplifier. Two separate numerical studies are presented, covering both beam bunching in the buncher cavity and field generation in the catcher cavity. Also addressed are the possibility of modelling the effect of the finite thickness of the cavity wall and beam coupling. The modelling of these practical aspects has not only resulted in some important insights into the field-particle interaction problem, but also demonstrated that the computer code developed is a powerful and versatile design tool. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Charged particle motion is incorporated within a transmission line modelling (TLM) field code to establish a new model which allows the investigation of field-particle interactions. The model is validated by using it to predict the trajectory of moving particles and the field and potential distributions inside a planar diode for which analytical solutions are available. The effect of space charge on the operation of the diode is also investigated. The model is then applied to study in detail a practical electron gun design.

    Notes: A new method of pivoting applicable to banded unsymmetric linear equation systems has been introduced. It limits the fill-in and preserves the basic structure. Two solvers, using the new pivoting strategy, have been developed. Both solvers have been written in the C language for two popular UNIX platforms (PC486 and the Sun Sparc5).     Notes: In this paper, an example problem is presented that illustrates the importance of strong objectivity in kinematic algorithms for large-deformation finite element applications. The example problem involves cyclic simple shearing of a hypoelastic material, wherein the increments of stretch and of rotation are of comparable magnitude. It is demonstrated that two kinematic algorithms that are in common use, and which are only weakly objective, give rise to an accumulative error in the normal stress components. The error is surprisingly large, even for very small strain increments. This behaviour arises due to a coupling between the stretch and rotation increments that is exhibited by weakly objective algorithms, and is perhaps especially serious in the context of models for jointed rock and other frictional materials, in which the shear response may depend strongly on the normal components of stress.

    Notes: The finite strip displacement functions for post-local buckling are augmented with so-called bubble functions, which are extra modes associated with internal or nodeless degrees of freedom. A non-linear finite strip method of analysis including bubble functions is described for the post-local buckling of geometrically imperfect plate assemblies. It is shown that the use of bubble functions improves significantly the convergence of the method. The non-linear finite strip method is then used to study channel and I-section members in compression and bending.
