    Notes: Abstract This review deals with a comparative analysis of seven genome sequences from plant-associated bacteria. These are the genomes of Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Mesorhizobium loti, Sinorhizobium meliloti, Xanthomonas campestris pv campestris, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv citri, Xylella fastidiosa, and Ralstonia solanacearum. Genome structure and the metabolism pathways available highlight the compromise between the genome size and lifestyle. Despite the recognized importance of the type III secretion system in controlling host compatibility, its presence is not universal in all necrogenic pathogens. Hemolysins, hemagglutinins, and some adhesins, previously reported only for mammalian pathogens, are present in most organisms discussed. Different numbers and combinations of cell wall degrading enzymes and genes to overcome the oxidative burst generally induced by the plant host are characterized in these genomes. A total of 19 genes not involved in housekeeping functions were found common to all these bacteria.

    Notes: Aims: To investigate the immunohistochemical and molecular genetic features of the cadherins/catenins complex in thyroid carcinoma based on the hypothesis that poorly differentiated carcinoma of the thyroid represents an intermediate step between well-differentiated and undifferentiated carcinomas.Methods and results: Immunohistochemistry for E-, P- and N-cadherins and α-, β- and γ-catenins was performed in a series of 17 cases of poorly differentiated carcinoma of the thyroid. All cases showed absence of membranous expression of E-cadherin with no aberrant expression of P- or N-cadherins; regarding catenins there was heterogeneous loss of expression with membranous immunolocalization of the three catenins in most cases. Molecular analysis of the E-cadherin gene and exon 3 of the β-catenin gene was also performed by polymerase chain reaction/single-strand conformation polymorphism and sequencing. No mutations in either gene were detected in any case.Conclusions:  In contrast to previous reports, our results suggest that loss of E-cadherin rather than β-catenin mutation is the crucial event in determining the differentiation ‘level’ of thyroid carcinomas.

    Notes: As morphological basis for experimental surgery on the rabbit the roots of the phrenic nerve in 15 male and 15 female rabbits of the Norfolk 2,000 breed were studied. In sketches made of the dissections the modes of origin of the phrenic roots were demonstrated to arise from the fourth to the seventh cervical nerves. Four types could be distinguished. The phrenic nerve of the rabbit may have two, three or four roots.

    Notes: Summary The relation between the smooth muscle cell mass of dog saphenous vein strips and the degree of supersensitivity to isoprenaline caused by U-0521 (3,4-dihydroxy-2-methyl propiophenone), an inhibitor of the catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT), was studied. For the quantitative determination of smooth muscle mass, the thickness of the muscle layer as determined by light microscopy and the maximal shortening induced by supramaximal concentration of phenylephrine were used. After the strips had been contracted by 3×10−6 M phenylephrine, a concentration which was able to produce an about 90% maximal contraction, dose-response curves to the relaxant effect of isoprenaline were determined in the absence and in the presence of U-0521 (10−4 M). It was observed that U-0521 caused marked supersensitivity to the relaxant effect of isoprenaline (varying between 3 and 81 times), as well as an increase of the maximal relaxation caused by this amine (varying between 7 and 120%). The correlation between these data and the smooth muscle cell mass shows that there was a direct proportionality between these parameters. Oxytetracycline (10−4 M), an inhibitor of binding of catecholamines to collagen, did not produce any enhancement of the effects of isoprenaline. It is concluded that COMT is related to smooth muscle cells in this tissue.

    Notes: The breakdown diagrams and photoionization efficiency curves of isomeric chlorobutane ions were obtained by energy-selected molecular ions with the photoelectron-photoion coincidence (PEPICO) technique. The loss of HCl from 1- and 2-chlorobutane molecular ions was found to be fast, and accurate dissociation onsets were determined from the crossover energy in the breakdown diagrams and appropriately corrected for the precursor thermal energy. In spit of the low activation energy, the isochlorobutane molecular ion was found to dissociate slowly near the dissociation limit, the time-of-flight distribution having been analyzed in terms of two exponential decay rates. The dissociation reaction involved a large kinetic energy release that pointed to a 1,2-elimination leading to a stable C4H8+· ion. AB initio calculations indicated that the reaction path involved an H-atom transfer through a barrier, which is a favorable case for a tunneling model to explain the slow decomposition rate. The kinetic energy release of chlorine radical loss from tert-chlorobutane was determined as a function of the ion internal energy. At low energies the kinetic energy release was nearly statistical but the dissociation from the excited electronic states resulted in a large and non-statistical kinetic energy release.

    Notes: The integral transform method is employed in the analytical solution of the non-classical eigenvalue problem that appears in connection with the analysis of forced convection in ducts, including the effect of fluid heat diffusion in the axial direction. The related eigenfunctions are expanded in terms of eigenfunctions from a simpler auxiliary eigenvalue problem, and the original eigenvalues are determined from the associated matrix eigensystem analysis. Convergence rates of the proposed solutions are illustrated and reference results established for different values of the governing parameters.
