Notes: A promising technique capable of performing localized resistance measurements over a surface is presented using a modified commercial atomic force microscope with a conducting probe. Its overall purpose is to obtain simultaneous cartographies of surface roughness and local resistance within a given microscopic area of a sample with nanometer scale resolution. Although an elaboration of suitable probes remains an ongoing problem, convincing images of some metal surfaces that reveal occasionally surprising features have already been obtained. Calculations performed from measurements have allowed us to clarify the mechanical nature of the tip/surface nanocontact and hence to determine the most probable transport process according to the range of resistance considered. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A two-dimensional model for hydrogen pair exchange in transition metal trihydrides is used to interpret NMR data observed for [cp(PPh3)IrH3]+. Inspired by quantum chemical results for [cp(PH3)IrH3]+, the model describes a combined process of rotational tunneling and IrH2 bending that merges into an H2 "lift-off'' motion at a small proton–proton distance. The condensed environment with which the tunneling system interacts is represented by a heat bath. A second-order perturbation treatment yields a master equation for the populations of the vibrational states within each of the rotational symmetry species A and B and for the respective AB coherences. A theoretical basis is provided for the evolution of the tunneling (AB) coherence as a damped oscillation in agreement with an independent treatment very recently published by Szymanski [J. Chem. Phys. 104, 8216 (1996)]. A simplified model assumption, containing one adjustable parameter, is made for the system–bath interaction. The temperature-dependent frequency of the tunneling process is found to be close to the Boltzmann average of the tunnel frequencies in the individual vibrational states. Both the calculated temperature-dependent coherence damping-rate constant and the tunnel frequency fit the experimental data after adjustment of three parameters describing the potential energy surface and of the parameter representing the system–bath interaction strength. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract: We have reproduced magneto-volume effects typical for Invar alloys by examining a spin-analogous model which describes coupled spatial and magnetic degrees of freedom and, additionally, chemical disorder. Constant pressure Monte Carlo simulations of this model show an almost vanishing thermal expansion over a broad range of temperatures below ,a softening of the bulk modulus and the absence of a sharp peak in the specific heat at the magnetic phase transition as observed in Fe65Ni35 Invar.

Notes: Abstract. The reconstruction of the ear pavilion includes at least two stages, usually three, and in many cases more. Complete reconstruction must begin with the plastic surgeon, who sculpts the cartilaginous skeleton, assembles parts of three ribs, and inserts the finished framework under the expanded skin of the mastoid area. During the second stage, the otologist intervenes, performing the cophosurgery, carving an external auditory canal, and completing the ossicular chain in the middle ear. The plastic surgeon harvests the skin for lining the external auditory canal and for the retroauricular fold and forms the lobule with a part of the microtic vestige. The third stage is dedicated to refinements. Cophosurgery may also be performed during the third stage or in an interval between two stages of pavilion construction. Twenty-one cases are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Extracranial meningiomas of the head and neck region are very rare, although secondary extracranial meningiomas beside meningiomas of primary extracranial origin have also been described. Trauma, radiation and (uncommonly) metastatic spread have been associated with the pathogenesis of secondary extracranial meningiomas. We present a case of a 53-year-old patient who required six neurosurgical interventions because of a recurrent intracranial meningioma. Further surgery was required for tumor in the left parotid gland. Histological examination of this neoplasm showed an atypical meningotheliomatous meningioma. The patient is now 17 months after surgery and is free of local recurrences or metastases.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Chronic persistent Myokarditis caused by parvovirus B19 in childhood has not yet been described. A case of a 17 month old boy admitted with a decompensated dilated cardiomyopathy is described. Precondition for diagnosis is a biopsy of the endomyocardium taken during catheterization. This should always be done to exclude an abnormal coronary orign from the pulmonary artery. With new methods like insituhybridisation and polymerase-chain-reaction the causative organism of a viral myocarditis can be detected. Discussion: A biopsy of the endomyocardium in cases of unclear cardiomyopathy is highly recommended. Dependent from the course of the infection new immunosuppressive and antiinflammatory therapies were evaluated in current studies.
