Notes: We report a 24-year-old woman, her 6-year-old son and her 1 7-month -old daughter, who all suffer from a rare congenital genodermatosis first delineated by Huriez et al. in the 1960s. The clinical features of this autosomal dominant condition include scleroatrophy of the hands and feel, nail hypoplasia, mild palmoplantar keratoderma and hypohidrosis. Histological changes are non-specific, but immunohistological and ultrastructural examination in our index patient revealed an almost complete absence of epidermal Langerhans cells in the affected skin. This new finding may be linked to the cancer proneness of the scleroatrophic skin. In this family, the grandmother had died at the age of 37 years from metastatic squamous cell carcinoma which had arisen on the thenar eminence.

Notes: The influence of temperature (6, 25, and 50C) and additive substances (salt, sugar and vinegar) on the adsorption kinetics of typical food emulsifiers, egg yolk and whey protein concentrate (WPC) were studied using the Wilhelmy plate/burst membrane method to monitor the interfacial tension (IT) at the water soya oil interface. The effect of solutes on the adsorption kinetics depended on emulsifier type. The presence of salt and higher temperatures reduced the IT of egg yolk solutions, while the IT of WPC solutions increased with salt addition. The presence of sugar and vinegar generally increased the IT of both emulsifiers while increased temperature caused the equilibrium IT of both emulsifiers to decrease and attain equilibrium more quickly.

Notes: Abstract Electrolytic silver was investigated as partial oxidation catalyst for the conversion of methanol to formaldehyde. Using the mass spectrometric technique as on-line detector the relation between feed composition and temperature was determined allowing us to conclude that two simultaneous reaction pathways operate under steady state conditions. The microstructure was analysed by XRD and STM. A pronounced restructuring of the surface on the mesoscopic scale was detected. The atomic structure of the γ oxygen phase was determined on the (111) face of facets grown during reaction. The two reaction pathways find their counterparts in two distinctly different surface microstructures providing different geometries for the respective active sites. After prolonged time on stream the high surface mobility of the silver atoms removes all mesoscopic restructuring without changing the conversion characteristics. The observed restructuring is thus considered as a frozen large scale image of the continuously changing surface under reaction conditions.

Notes: Abstract The evaporation process of zirconia powders injected in a thermal rf plasma is investigated. Both model calculations and optical emission spectroscopy are used to study the evaporation behavior. Gas temperatures and velocity distributions are determined numerically from conservation laws and Maxwell equations. The influence of plasma and particle parameters on the thermal history of entrained particles is discussed. Asymmetric Abel inversion is applied to detect asymmetric emission profiles in the plasma source. Spectroscopic measurements reveal that evaporated zirconium is concentrated near the axis of the plasma. Numerical calculations show that line-integrated emission profiles can be used to distinguish the cases of complete and incomplete evaporation. Axial emission profiles confirm that the evaporation zone is shifted upstream of the plasma when smaller precursor particles are used.

Notes: Abstract The accumulation of phytoplankton biomass, which oftenoccurs when water bodies receive enhanced inputs ofinorganic nutrients, causes large changes in theavailability and spectral composition of underwaterlight. Quantitative descriptions of the variations inlight available to phytoplankton are a prerequisitefor modelling of aquatic primary productivity. As anexample of the range of natural variation inirradiance, the main spectral, spatial and temporalchanges in underwater light, which occur in a shalloweutrophic estuary in response both to increasingchlorophyll concentration and to wind-induced verticalmixing, are described. Additionally, phytoplanktonwere shown to exhibit changes in photosyntheticphysiology which were triggered by changes in thequantity and spectra of light. The characteristics andkinetics of these responses are presented anddiscussed in relation to their impact on modelling ofprimary productivity.

Notes: Abstract Superfine Y-TZP powders of high purity were prepared by using clean-room facilities. The effects of several kinds of minute or small amounts of additives on the densification and microstructural development of the Y-TZP powder were investigated. It was found that ≤1 wt% ferric or calcium oxides did not affect the densification of the Y-TZP powder compacts, while the addition of sodium oxides retarded the densification and that of copper oxide accelerated it, and these effects are most obvious at an additive level of 1 wt%. The retardation of the densification by sodium oxide was found to result from the agglomeration effect of the powder, and the formation of the eutectic liquid phase between zirconia and copper oxides promoted the densification and grain growth during sintering of copper oxide-doped powder. In addition, sodium and copper oxides both destabilize the tetragonal Y-TZP and lead to the formation of monoclinic phase.
