Notes: Abstract Background. IgA nephropathy is the commonest type of glomerulonephritis. Recent studies have shown a decrease in the expression of HLA class I antigens on peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes (PBML) from patients with HLA class II-associated autoimmune diseases. In this study, the expression of HLA molecules on T cells from patients with IgA nephropathy was examined in order to investigate the immunological events contributing to the pathogenesis of this disorder. Methods. Thirty Japanese patients with IgA nephropathy were studied. Nine patients with membranous nephropathy and 21 sex- and age-matched healthy individuals were enrolled as controls. Heparinized PBML with or without stimulation by an anti-CD3 monoclonal antibody were analyzed in regard to the expression of HLA-class I, HLA-DR, CD4, CD8, CD11a, CD11b, and CD56, by two-color fluorescence flow cytometry. Results. The expressions of HLA-class I, HLA-DR, CD11a, CD11b, and CD56 on resting CD3-positive, CD4-positive, CD8-positive, or CD20-positive cells from patients with IgA nephropathy were found to be comparable with those from the controls. However, after stimulation by anti-CD3 antibody, the expression of HLA-DR on CD4-positive cells from these patients was significantly higher than that from the controls. Further, the expression of HLA-DR on CD4-positive cells from patients with proteinuria of more than 1 g/day was much higher than that in patients with proteinuria of less than 1 g/day. Conclusions. In this study, the expression of HLA-DR on stimulated Th cells from IgA nephropathy patients was shown to be significantly higher than the expression in the stimulated T cells from the controls. This finding suggests that Th cells may acquire antigen-presenting activity by HLA-DR expression, present antigens to other Th cells, promote B cells to produce antibodies, and, presumably, lead to the development of IgA nephropathy.

Notes: Abstract  The arrangement principles and design methodology on soft computing for complex control framework of AI control system in Part 1 of this paper are developed. The basis of this methodology is computer simulation of dynamics for mechanical robotic system with the help of qualitative physics and search for possible solutions by genetic algorithms (GA). In Part 2 optimal solutions for navigation with avoidance of obstacles and technological operations as opening of door with a manipulator on GA and fuzzy neural network (FNN) are obtained and knowledge base (KB) for fuzzy controller is formed. Fuzzy qualitative simulation, GA and hierarchical node map (HN), and FNN have demonstrated their effectiveness for path planning of a mobile robot for service use. The results of fuzzy robot control simulation, monitoring, and experimental investigations are described.

Notes: Abstract  The arrangement principles and design methodology on soft computing for complex control framework of AI control system are introduced. The basis of this methodology is computer simulation of dynamics for mechanical robotic system with the help of qualitative physics and search for possible solutions by genetic algorithms (GA). New approach for direct human-robot communication with natural language (NL) and cognitive graphics is introduced. Active adaptation block which helps to mobile robot to learn a new actions and scripts based on soft computing as fuzzy neural networks, fuzzy control and genetic algorithms are proposed.

Notes: Abstract The role of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) as a precursor of chlorophyll or a herbicide is well documented. In the present report, to elucidate the physiological effects of ALA, this compound was applied to the foliage of radish at 0.06, 0.18, 0.6, 1.8 and 6 mM. ALA at 0.06ndash;1.8 mM increased the dry weight of radish root (underground part), but injured radish seedlings at 6 mM. Also, the application of ALA at 0.18 and 0.6 mM increased fixation of CO2 in light and decreased release of CO2 in darkness. Furthermore, the effects of foliar treatment of ALA on the yield of several crops were also evaluated. The results showed that an application of ALA at low concentrations increased the growth and yield by 10ndash;60percnt; over the control on kidney bean, barley, potato and garlic. These results suggest that ALA has plant growth regulating properties at low concentrations and may enhance agricultural productivity.

Notes: Abstract 5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) was produced aerobically in the dark during growth on glucose by a newly isolated Chlorella sp. When levulinic acid (20 mM), a competitive inhibitor of ALA dehydratase, was added repeatedly to the medium, about 1.5 mM of ALA was produced extracellularly. Glutamate (30 mM) added with levulinic acid (20 mM, given repeatedly) enhanced ALA production up to 1.9 mM, indicating that ALA might be synthesized via the C-5 pathway.
