Notizen: Summary Pathological specimens were collected from 14 unruptured and 13 ruptured aneurysms at the time of clipping and studied in order to assess the underlying mechanism of rupture by investigating degeneration of the aneurysmal wall and possible involvement of apoptosis. Immunohistochemistry with anti-actin antibody showed few smooth muscle cells in the ruptured aneurysms and replacement of the muscularis layer by a fibro-hyalin tissue. However, at least one layer of smooth muscle cells was clearly observed in the unruptured aneurysms. Thus, smooth muscle cells in the wall of the ruptured aneurysms were much more degenerated than those in the wall of unruptured aneurysms. In addition, unruptured aneurysms with an angiographically smooth wall showed well-layered positive staining for anti-smooth muscle actin antibody while those with irregular shapes rarely reacted. We found, for the first time, evidence of DNA fragmentation in the aneurysmal wall. Apoptotic bodies were detected by means of a terminal transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP biotin nick end labelling technique (TUNEL) and an anti-single-stranded DNA antibody in 54% (7/13) of the ruptured aneurysms. In contrast, apoptotic bodies were found in only 7% (1/14) of the unruptured cases. These results suggest that apoptotic cell death might be involved in the rupture of aneurysms.

Notizen: Abstract Focused ion beam (FIB) and ion milling techniques are developed for the fabrication of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+1d (Bi-2212) stacked junctions with in-plane size L ab ranging from several microns down to the submicron scale without degradation of superconducting transition temperature T c. It is found that the behavior of submicron junctions (L ab〈1 µm) is quite different from that of larger ones. The critical current density is considerably suppressed, the hysteresis and multibranched structure of the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics are eliminated, and a periodic structure of current peaks appears reproducibly on the I-V curves at low temperatures. The period ΔV of the structure is consistent with the Coulomb charging energy of a single pair, ΔV=e/C, where C is the effective capacitance of the stack. It is considered that this behavior originates from the Coulomb blockade of the intrinsic Josephson tunneling in submicron Bi-2212 stacks.

Notizen: Abstract In order to develop the seeded dispersion polymerization technique for the production of micron-sized monodispersed core/shell composite polymer particles the effect of polymerization temperature on the core/shell morphology was examined. Micron-sized monodispersed composite particles were produced by seeded dispersion polymerizations of styrene with about 1.4-μm-sized monodispersed poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (Pn-BMA) and poly(i-butyl methacrylate) (Pi-BMA) particles in a methanol/water (4/1, w/w) medium in the temperature range from 20 to 90 °C. The composite particles, PBMA/polystyrene (PS) (2/1, w/w), consisting of a PBMA core and a PS shell were produced with 2,2′-azobis(4-methoxy-2,4-dimethyl valeronitrile) initiator at 30 °C for Pn-BMA seed and with 2,2′-azobis(isobutyronitrile) initiator at 60 °C for Pi-BMA seed. The polymerization temperatures were a little above the glass-transition temperatures (T g) of both Pn-BMA (20 °C) and Pi-BMA (40 °C). On the other hand, when the seeded dispersion polymerizations were carried out at much higher temperatures than the T g of the seed polymers, composite particles having a polymeric oil-in-oil structure were produced.

Notizen: For the purpose of extending the size range of polymer seed particles used in “dynamic swelling method” (DSM), first it was verified theoretically that the submicron-sized polymer particles produced by emulsion polymerization can also absorb a large amount of monomer by DSM in both equilibrium and kinetic control states. Next, on the basis of the theoretical results, experimentally about 2.6 μm-sized styrene-swollen polystyrene (PS) particles were prepared utilizing DSM in the presence of 0.64 μm-sized monodispersed PS seed particles produced by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization. Moreover, 2.5 μm-sized monodispersed PS particles were produced by the addition of cupric chloride as a water-soluble inhibitor to depress the by-production of submicron-sized PS particles in the seeded polymerization at 30°C with 2,2′-azobis(4-methoxy-2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) initiator. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notizen: Recently, we suggested a novel swelling method to make polymer seed particles absorb a large amount of monomer prior to the seeded polymerization for preparing monodispersed polymer particles having diameter above 5μm, which we named the “dynamic swelling method.” This article discusses the thermodynamic background of this method, both theo-retically and experimentally. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: A novel intrinsic photosensitive polyimide containing a diazo group in the main chain was prepared, and the quantum yield for the photocrosslinking reaction was determined to be 0.13 under air at room temperature by GPC measurement. The quantum yield for the photo-decomposition reaction of the diazo group was also determined to be 0.06. These values are higher by about two orders of magnitude than those for the photocrosslinking reaction of a benzophenone-containing polyimide, which is prepared from benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and methylene bis(2-ethylaniline) (DEDPM). The reaction was found to proceed via its singlet excited state to give a long-lived active intermediate, a carbene, which plays a great role in the increase in the photoreactivity. Characteristics of the photoreaction and the fluorescence behavior of a series of imide-substituted diphenyldiazomethanes were also investigated, showing that the reactivity of the diazo groups is not affected by the existence of charge transfer structures of the imide groups.
