Notes: Abstract Ten cases of primary gastric malignant lymphoma (PGL) were investigated by immunohistochemical and molecular genetic analysis. These cases were diagnosed histopathologically as follicular small cleaved cell type (1 case), diffuse small cleaved cell type (3 cases) and diffuse large cell type (6 cases) based on the WF (Working Formulation) classification. Seven cases classified as small cleaved or diffuse large cell type belong to low (4 cases) or high (3 cases) grade MALT lymphoma according to Isaacson's classification. All PGL belonged to B lineage cells according to immunohistochemical study and immunoglobulin rearrangements. Rearrangements of TCR β chain genes were observed in four of the ten cases. The possibility that the TCR β rearrangements were caused by tumour-infiltrating T-cells (TILs) was supported by the following observations: the tumours did not show T- and B-cell biphenotype, TCR β exhibited functional VDJ rearrangement and Vβ usage pattern was not a neoplastic type. Analysis of the repertoire of the TCR β chain in TILs revealed a common usage of Vβ2 in the above four cases, and furthermore, predominant usage of a particular β chain composed of Vβ2-Dβ2.1-Jβ2.3 was observed in one of the four cases. These results indicate that the TILs of PGL have a restricted TCR repertoire.

Notes: Abstract The relation between HLA class II alleles and clinical findings were examined in Japanese patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In 284 patients with multicenter SLE, HLA class II alleles were examined using the DNA typing method, and the results were compared with the clinical findings. The frequency of DRB1*0101 and DQB1*0501 significantly increased in male patients, and that of DRB1*0803 significantly increased in patients over 50 years of age. In relation to cutaneous manifestations, there were positive photosensitivity associations with DQA1*0101 and/or DQA1*0301, malar rash with DQA1*0101 and/or DRB1*0901, alopecia with DQA1*0101, skin ulcers with DRB1*0401, and oral ulcers with DQA1*0301. In addition, there were also positive associations of myalgia with DRB1*1406 and negative associations of aseptic bone necrosis with DQA1*0601, and hepatomegaly with DRB1*0405 and/or DQA1*0401. In relation to laboratory findings, there were positive associations of hemolytic anemia with DRB1*1402 and negative associations of leukopenia with DQA1*0601, lymphopenia with DQA1*0301, and proteinuria with DRB1*0901. Interestingly, DQA1*0101 and/or DQB1*0501 were significantly associated with WHO classification type II rather than type IV. In patients with SLE, some HLA types related to clinical or laboratory findings.

Notes: A novel intrinsic photosensitive polyimide containing a diazo group in the main chain was prepared, and the quantum yield for the photocrosslinking reaction was determined to be 0.13 under air at room temperature by GPC measurement. The quantum yield for the photo-decomposition reaction of the diazo group was also determined to be 0.06. These values are higher by about two orders of magnitude than those for the photocrosslinking reaction of a benzophenone-containing polyimide, which is prepared from benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and methylene bis(2-ethylaniline) (DEDPM). The reaction was found to proceed via its singlet excited state to give a long-lived active intermediate, a carbene, which plays a great role in the increase in the photoreactivity. Characteristics of the photoreaction and the fluorescence behavior of a series of imide-substituted diphenyldiazomethanes were also investigated, showing that the reactivity of the diazo groups is not affected by the existence of charge transfer structures of the imide groups.
