Notes: Abstract  Lymphoblastic lymphoma (LBL) is a highly malignant subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and generally carries a T-cell phenotype with mediastinum or central nervous system (CNS) involvement. However, only a small proportion of LBL exhibit a B-cell phenotype (B-LBL), and these frequently present at the head and neck without mediastinum or CNS involvement. Three immunological subgroups may exist. The most predominant CD10-positive pre-B-cell type, corresponding to a precursor B-cell neoplasm, frequently involves the head and neck. The second, CD10-negative or mature B-cell type, defined by the absence of CD10 or presence of surface membrane immunoglobulins combined with expression of CD19 or CD20, often involves the mediastinum. The final group is a CD5-positive B-cell type corresponding to a blastic variant of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). Its clinical course is less aggressive, patients are often older, and nodal lesions are more frequent than extranodal involvement. Thus, B-LBL is immunologically diverse, but its biological behavior correlates with the immunophenotype.

Notes: Abstract Objective: Eighty-three healthy elderly Swedish subjects (age 87 ± 4 years, mean ± SD, range 80–98 years) were genotyped with respect to the two genetic polymorphisms of oxidative drug metabolism, CYP2D6 and CYP2C19, using allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A control population consisted of 248 younger unrelated healthy volunteers (age 31 ± 9 years, range 19–63 years) for CYP2D6, and 162 (age 30 ± 8 years, range 19–55 years) for CYP2C19. Results: No significant differences were found between the control groups and the elderly subjects with respect to the frequencies of the defect alleles CYP2D6*3, CYP2D6*4, CYP2C19*2 and CYP2C19*3. Neither were there any differences in the genotype frequencies, or the predicted phenotype frequencies. The study indicates that the CYP2D6 and CYP2C19 genotypes play no major role in the probability of reaching high age. Conclusion: No genetically determined differences in the pharmacokinetics of drugs metabolized by these two polymorphic enzymes are to be expected in the oldest age groups compared with younger adults.

Notes: Abstract A kit using mouse monolconal antibody against human alpha-fetoprotein (anti-AFP kit) has been developed. Cervical secretion (n=34) and vaginal fluid (n=15) was obtained from 30 pregnant volunteers. All 31 specimens obtained from women with intact membranes tested negative while all 18 specimens from women with premature rupture of membranes (PROM) tested positive. The newly developed kit allowed rapid and accurate diagnosis. We compared the kit results with those obtained by pH determination (nitrazine, bromthymol blue test) and measurement of AFP concentrations by enzyme-linked immunoassay (EIA).
