Notizen: Abstract. The characteristics and variability of soils within a 30 ha experimental site in N. E. Nigeria are analysed in relation to tree establishment. Profile description and analyses for some 480 surface samples of the sandy to clayey surface soils from Lake Chad lacustrine sediments provide baseline properties against which any subsequent modifications resulting from agroforestry practices can be assessed and to which initial tree performance can be related. This has been undertaken using principal component and spatial analyses. Inherited soil properties show spatial variations across the site which can be related to the soil textural parameters. The initial survival of trees planted for agroforestry experimentation shows strong correlations with the inherited characteristics of the soil rather than with acquired soil properties.

Notizen: Abstract Reported here is the clinical presentation and management of patients with rapidly growing non-tuberculous mycobacterial infection diagnosed in a paediatric oncology unit. A retrospective analysis that correlated patient isolates with the children's cancer registry revealed two cases of non-tuberculous mycobacterial infection; both had been observed within the last 6 years and were due toMycobacterium chelonae. The first case was line-associated and the second was a disseminated infection. In both cases the patients were lymphopenic and had had indwelling vascular catheters. Neither patient was neutropenic. The literature on mycobacterial infection in children with cancer is also reviewed.

Notizen: Abstract: Excited states have been identified for the first time in 184Pb, the first even-even Pb isotope beyond the 82 〈 N 〈 126 mid-shell, using the recoil-decay tagging (RDT) technique. A collective band built on the first-excited 2+ state has been observed. This resembles those seen in 186,188Pb and the Hg isotones, and can thus be associated with a prolate-deformed shape. Variable moment of inertia (VMI) fits of the prolate 0+ level energies in 184,186,188Pb indicate that the minimum appears at N= 103, the same neutron number at which the corresponding minimum in Hg isotopes is observed.

Notizen: Abstract Research is described, aimed to support traceability in the design of software for safety-critical applications, through the provision of an on-line design journal enabling design decisions and actions to be traced and recorded. The design environment, within which various software design tools may be encapsulated, enables protocol between the user and the design tools to be trapped. This provides software engineering support at the conceptual design stage. An important aim of the research is to enable inferences to be made from the captured protocol, for which the application of artificial intelligence methods is being investigated.

Notizen: Abstract A number of published studies have investigated the application of neural network technology to residential property appraisal. The majority of these studies have concentrated on homogeneous areas (that is areas where properties are subject to the same environment and locational factors). This is generally done to restrict the data set to one local sub- market. However, the models created are specialised and not locationally portable. This paper presents a methodology, which builds on research reported by James [1], in which a Kohonen map is used to uncover sub-markets within a large data set that are subsequently independently used to train a series of back-propagation networks. (The paper also introduces a novel boundary detection algorithm for a Kohonen self organising map.) The study concludes that by modelling possible sub-markets an acceptable accuracy over a heterogeneous area can be achieved. The work presented in this paper is funded via a Realising Our Potential Award under the auspices of the ESRC.

Notizen: Abstract This study examined the effect of end-point cadence on the parameters of the work-time relationship determined for cycle ergometry. Eight male subjects completed four maximal tests on an electrically-braked cycle ergometer that regulated a constant power output independent of cadence. The power outputs imposed ranged between an average of 259 W and 403 W, whereas the corresponding durations ranged between 139 s and 1691 s. During each test subjects were required to maintain a cadence of 80–90 rpm. Accumulated time to end-point cadences of 70, 60 and 50 rpm were recorded. The four work-time determinations for each of three end-point cadences were used to determine linear relationships between work and time, yielding both a y-intercept, which represents anaerobic work capacity, and a slope, which is termed critical power (CP), for each end-point cadence. There was a significant increase in the y-intercept as end-point cadence decreased from 70 to 60 rpm (F[1,7]=36.7, p 〈 0.001) or 70 to 50 rpm (F[1,7]=80.1, p 〈 0.001), but not from 60 rpm to 50 rpm (F[1,7]=3.28, p 〉 0.05). In contrast, there was no effect of end-point cadence on CP (F[2,14]=1.89, p 〈 0.05). These results demonstrate that the end-point cadence selected to terminate tests only affects the y-intercept of the work-time relationship. To control for this effect, the cadence at which each test is terminated should be standardised if determination of anaerobic work capacity, as represented by the y-intercept, is required.

Notizen: Abstract This paper describes classroom experience with the shape optimization of a lap joint. The project stressed the combination of optimization based on analytical models and experimental improvement of the design obtained based on analysis. Students used a variety of tools for optimizing the designs, ranging from exhaustive evaluation via spread sheet programs to formal optimization. The project shows promise for introducing students to all aspects of design optimization. Improvements in the basic project are suggested on the basis of classroom experience.
