Notes: Abstract: Beta decay of 58Zn has been studied for the first time. A new laser ion-source concept has been used to produce mass-separated sources for beta and gamma spectroscopy. The half-life of 58Zn was determined to be 86(18) ms. Comparisons are made with previous data from charge-exchange reactions. Our Gamow–Teller strength to the 1+ state at 1051 keV excitation in 58Cu agrees well with the value extracted from a recent (3He, t) study. Extensive shell-model calculations are presented.

Notes: Abstract There is a cogent body of evidence showing that the physical properties of glass reinforced plastics (GRP) can be vastly improved, by pre-treatment of the glass fibers with appropriate coupling agents or sizes. This is the fourth part of a research series investigating different silanes with non-aqueous solvents and their effect upon silane deposition onto glass fibers. A sample of E-glass fibers were treated with a 2% solution of a ureido silane in ethanol. (ex Ahlström) for 16 hours at 23° ±2°C. The fibers were washed with ethanol and dried at 120°C, and then subsequently washed with a series of solvents and dried at 120°C to ensure removal of all solvents. The sequential solvent wash was used to determine the amount of silane which was physisorbed as opposed to chemisorbed. The treated fibers were examined by XPS, diffuse reflectance FTIR, TGA & SEM. It has been shown previously that the choice of washing solvents and the drying conditions employed are of the utmost importance in removal of physisorbed silane. A certain amount of silane is absorbed onto the glass surface during the treatment the amount being determined by the interaction between solvent, silane and the glass surface. SEM photomicrographs show the silane networks between adjacent fibers, which are still in place after the modification, indicating large amounts of silane available for forming interpenetrating networks with polymers.

Notes: Abstract: The β decay of 61Ga to its mirror nucleus 61Zn has been measured for the first time by using on-line mass separation and β-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy. The observed decay strength to the ground state implies superallowed character in accordance with the systematics of the mirror decays in the sd and fp shell. The β feedings observed to four excited states in 61Zn are consistent with earlier spin-parity assignments based on in-beam experiments. The ground-state spin and parity for 61Ga were determined to be 3/2−.
