Notizen: The lipid composition of the brain, including myelin, was studied in detail in two cases with a variant form of metachromatic leukodystrophy (multiple sulphatase deficiency type). In the white matter, the sulphatide concentration was 3–4 times higher than the normal level in both cases. There was a significant accumulation of cholesterol sulphate in the brain, liver and kidney of both cases. The ganglioside pattern in the grey and white matter was abnormal, with a higher proportion of GM3, GM2 and GD3-gangliosides. Non-lipid hexosamine contents were increased 1.5-2 times in brain, 8–10 times in liver and 2–3 times in kidney. Increased amounts of glucocerobroside, ceramide lactoside and ceramide trihexoside were present in grey and white matter of both cases.Recovery of purified myelin from two patients’brains was much less than from control (1–20% in case 1 and 20–30% in case 2). The lipid composition of myelin was almost normal except for a higher proportion of sulphatide, with a decreased amount of cerebroside. The fatty acid compositions of myelin sulphatide and sphingomyelin were almost normal, while non-hydroxy fatty acids of cerebroside contained less long-chain fatty acids, as characterized by a significant increase of C16:0 and C18:0 fatty acids. The myelin polypeptide pattern by SDS-disc gel electrophoresis showed a relative decrease of basic protein and of proteolipid protein.A possible mechanism of myelin loss in MSD is discussed.

Notizen: The degradation of selectivity doped Al0.35Ga0.65As/GaAs heterostructures caused by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) was studied. The samples were annealed for 30 s at temperatures between 600 °C and 850 °C. Thereafter, the samples were characterized by Hall measurements at room temperature. Conventional heterostructures with a random alloy Al0.35Ga0.65As spacer and donor layer show a strong degradation for annealing temperatures of 650 °C or higher. For heterostructures employing a stoichiometric equivalent short period superlattice (SPS) in spacer and donor region only a slight degradation was found for annealing temperatures up to 850 °C. As reason for the increased thermal stability, the suppression of As loss during the annealing by the SPS was identified. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We calculate resonance energies, wave functions, and widths by propagating wave packets on a grid. A collinear model of a symmetric triatomic molecule is studied and the results are compared to those obtained from a time-independent complex scaling calculation.

Notizen: A novel time-dependent hybrid quantum/classical propagation scheme based on Bohmian quantum trajectories is presented. The quantum subsystem is described by a wave packet depending on the quantum variables x and, via the total potential energy of the system, parametrically on the classical trajectories X(t). The wave packet is used to calculate de Broglie–Bohm quantum trajectories x(t) which are used to calculate the force acting on the classical variables. Quantum corrections of the classical equation of motion are also included. The method is applied to a simple case of two coupled oscillators. Comparison between exact quantum and approximate results demonstrates that these MQCB (Mixed Quantum/Classical Bohmian) trajectories provide a good description of the energy exchange between the two oscillators. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We present a comparison of experiment and theory of ultrafast one-color pump–probe multiphoton ionization spectrocopy of K2. The wave packet propagation in the A 1Σu+ state and in the (2) 1Πg Rydberg state is monitored in detail by changing systematically the pump and probe wavelength from 779 nm to 837 nm. The measured total ionization rates as a function of the delay time between pump and probe are shown to depend sensitively on the pump and probe wavelengths used and exhibit drastic changes and a variety of fascinating structures as the direct observation of inward and outward wave packet detection and frequency doubling of the detected wave packet oscillation. The time dependent quantum mechanical wave packet calculations are in excellent agreement with the experimental results and allow a clear interpretation of different ionization pathways and mechanisms observed in the femtosecond ion signal. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We performed a time-dependent wave packet study to investigate the fragmentation and recombination of the I2–Ar Van der Waals complex following excitation above the B-state dissociation limit. Based on a recently published ab initio potential energy surface of the ground state [C. F. Kunz, I. Burghardt, and B. Hess, J. Chem. Phys. 109, 359 (1998)], we studied the possible kinematic origin of the "one-atom cage effect" by three-dimensional wave packet propagation within the rotational infinite order sudden approximation. We found that final vibrational distributions depend strongly on the ground and excited state equilibrium geometries. Taking uncertainties in the excited state potential into account, we confirm a possible kinematic origin of the one-atom cage effect from a collinear isomer of the I2–Ar complex, initially proposed by Valentini and Cross [J. J. Valentini and J. B. Cross, J. Chem. Phys. 77, 572 (1982)]. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We investigate "negative-ion-to-neutral-to-positive-ion" (NENEPO) pump-probe spectroscopy as proposed by Wöste and co-workers [Wolf et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 4177 (1995)] where the dynamics of wave packets in a neutral molecule produced by photodetachment from the negative ion is probed by time-delayed photoionization and detection of positive molecular ions or photoelectrons. Approximations are introduced for an effective numerical treatment of the double-ionization process. The organometallic compound FeCO is used as an example. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The dynamics of the vibrational predissociation of the I2Ne2(B,ν=21) cluster is studied using a full-dimensional time-dependent wave packet approach. The 6-D propagation is performed with the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method. The time dependence of the I2 vibrational state populations is monitored during the dissociation process. The final vibrational populations are compared to experimental findings of Levy et al. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We apply the MQCB (mixed quantum/classical mechanics based on Bohmian trajectories) [E. Gindensperger, C. Meier, and J. A. Beswick, J. Chem. Phys. 113, 9369 (2000)] to the case where the quantum degree of freedom contains both bound and continuum states. The quantum degree of freedom is treated by a wave packet that is propagated on a spatial grid with a Hamiltonian that depends parametrically on the classical degrees of freedom, while the classical degrees of freedom themselves are coupled to the wave function via quantum trajectories. The method is applied to a simple model of a light particle colliding with a heavy (classical) particle absorbed on a surface, which has been used by other authors to develop methods to combine quantum degrees of freedom including continuum states with classical mechanics. The results are compared to the Ehrenfest mean-field method as well as to full quantum results. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The recently discovered connexin29 (Cx29) was reported to be present in the central and peripheral nervous systems (CNS and PNS), and its mRNA was found in particular abundance in peripheral nerve. The expression and localization of Cx29 protein in sciatic nerve were investigated using an antibody against Cx29. The antibody recognized Cx29 in HeLa cells transfected with Cx29 cDNA, while nontransfected HeLa cells were devoid of Cx29. Immunoblotting of sciatic nerve homogenate revealed monomeric and possibly higher molecular weight forms of Cx29. These were distinguished from connexin32 (Cx32), which also is expressed in peripheral nerve. Double immunofluorescence labelling for Cx29 and Cx32 revealed only partial colocalization of the two connexins, with codistribution at intermittent, conical-shaped striations along nerve fibers. By freeze-fracture replica immunogold labelling (FRIL), Cx32 was found in gap junctions in the outermost layers of myelin, whereas Cx29-immunogold labelling was found only in the innermost layer of myelin in close association with hexagonally arranged intramembrane particle (IMP) ‘rosettes’ and gap junction-like clusters of IMPs. Although both Cx32 and Cx29 were detected in myelin of normal mice, only Cx29 was present in Schwann cell membranes in Cx32 knockout mice. The results confirm that Cx29 is a second connexin expressed in Schwann cells of sciatic nerve. In addition, Cx29 is present in distinctive IMP arrays in the inner most layer of myelin, adjacent to internodal axonal plasma membranes, where this connexin may have previously unrecognized functions.
