    Notes: Abstract It is widely accepted now that a significant fraction of the solar energetic particles (SEPs) observed at 1 AU after major solar flares are actually accelerated at a CME-driven shock. In addition, in the emerging new paradigm for SEP acceleration in different sources at or near the Sun, the existence of two types of flares – impulsive and gradual – is recognized. Within this concept, it is tempting also to separate SEPs into two groups – interacting and escaping – and to derive their 'source spectra' from observational data on various flare emissions (protons, gamma rays, neutrons, etc.). By different techniques, those spectra have been reconstructed for 80 solar proton events (SPE) in 1949–1991. In this paper, all available data on the source spectra of solar protons are summarized and revised. We discuss in detail existing uncertainties in the derived spectral indexes, consider other methodological problems involved in this study, and suggest several possible lines for the future investigations of solar flares and SCRs using the source spectrum data. It is noted that some peculiarities of the spectra, for instance, spectral steepening for high energies, may be characteristic of large events of the 23 February 1956 type.

    Notes: Abstract The lubrication regime displayed by human salivas (parotid and submandibular-sublingual), purified salivary molecules (the mucins MG1 and MG2 and α-amylases), and selected artificial salivas (Oracare D, Saliva Substitute, and Orthana) was assessed in vitro using a friction-testing device. Thin-film (boundary) lubrication was observed for all of the salivary samples and two of the artificial salivas examined. Oracare D, a glycerol-based artificial saliva, was the exception since it lubricated by a thick-film (hydrodynamic) regime. On a molar basis, the best lubricants of the purified salivary molecules were MG1 〉 MG2 ≈ nonglycosylated α-amylases ≈ glycosylated α-amylases.

    Notes: Abstract Following a given classification of geomagnetic activity, we obtained aa index values for the Maunder minimum (1645–1715). It is found that the recurrent and fluctuating activities were not appreciable and that the shock activity levels were very low. The aa index level was due almost entirely to the quiet days. Calculated average solar-wind velocities were 194.3 km s−1 from 1657 to 1700 and 218.7 km s−1 from 1700 onwards. Also, the coronal magnetic field magnitude and southward interplanetary magnetic field component Bz were lower. It is concluded that the nearly absent levels of geomagnetic activity during this period were due to lower coronal and Bz magnetic field magnitudes as well as to the continuous impinging on the Earth of a slow wind.

    Notes: Abstract We studied the occurrence of ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) events in relation to solar activity conditions and we found that the events are distributed in two populations, one that could be associated with low latitude coronal holes which occur along the ascending phase of the cycle and the other one which could be related to polar holes present at the end of the descending phase. As highly anomalous solar activity, in terms of flares and coronal holes, occurred in March of this year, we propose that an ENSO event is likely to occur by the end of the year.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal equilibrium of a hydrogen plasma heated and ionized by an external radiation field, diluted by a factorW * and defined by an effective temperatureT *, is studied. In addition, the problem of propagation of acoustic and thermal waves in the above plasma model is also analysed. It is found that an external radiation field has stabilizing effects against wave amplification. From the dispersion relation obtained, the phase velocity $$\tilde v$$ for sound and thermal waves and their respective scale-length of damping (or anti-damping) $$\tilde \omega $$ is calculated as a function of the frequency $$\tilde l$$ for representative values of the plasma temperature $$\tilde T$$ and the external radiation fieldT *.

    Notes: Abstract The propagation of linear sound and thermal waves in a reacting fluid, in which the heating and cooling processes can be represented by a heat-loss functionL(ρ, T, ξ is studied. A complex dispersion relation is found, from which the phase velocity and the scale length for damping (or amplification), of the above two-wave mode are calculated Wave amplification may occur in reacting locally stable fluids. Results are applied to a hydrogen plasma model assumed to be heated at a non-specified constant rate and cooled by recombination, excitation, and ionization by collisions, and free-free transitions. The phase velocity $$\tilde l$$ , the scale-length for damping $$\tilde \upsilon$$ , and the relevant relaxation times are calculated as functions of the dimensionless frequency $$\tilde \omega$$ , for temperatures ranging from those at which the hydrogen plasma is neutral to those at which it becomes completely ionized.
