Notes: Hydrogenated amorphous silicon films were deposited by ion-beam-assisted evaporation using a hydrogen–argon plasma. The influence of the substrate temperature was studied. Light induced photoconductivity decay measurements showed that high stability materials can be obtained under well defined conditions. By combined infrared spectrometry and thermal desorption spectrometry experiments, it was demonstrated that microstructure has a great influence on the stability against light induced defects. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The release of hydrogen from Si1−xSnx:H (0≤x≤0.2) amorphous semiconductors prepared by reactive evaporation on substrates maintained at 77 K is monitored by effusion experiments. The effusion peaks are associated with desorption from voids. The deconvolution of these peaks allows one to deduce the different atomic configurations containing hydrogen and to determine their stability and their Gibbs free energy of desorption. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Thin films of iron nitrides have been prepared using an ion beam assisted evaporation method. X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectrometry show that the films generally consist in a mixture of Fe and Fe4N phases. For high source powers and temperatures higher than 300 °C it was possible to obtain the pure Fe4N phase. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Hydrogenated amorphous silicon films were deposited by ion-beam-assisted evaporation onto substrates maintained at 120 °C. The influence of the substrate bias was studied. By combined infrared spectrometry and thermal desorption spectrometry experiments, it is inferred that the bombardment of the growing a-Si:H film by energetic hydrogen ions produces a densification of the material without modification of the Si:H bonding. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Visible photoluminescence (PL) can be observed in a-SiOx and a-SiOx:H alloys prepared by evaporation of SiO in ultrahigh vacuum and under a flow of hydrogen ions, respectively. The hydrogen and oxygen bonding is studied by infrared spectrometry. The hydrogen stability is followed by thermal desorption spectrometry experiments. The evolution of the PL with annealing treatments shows that the PL can be attributed to a quantum confinement effect in a-Si clusters embedded in the matrix of a-SiOx. Hydrogen does not greatly contribute to the PL efficiency and to the thermal evolution of the a-Si clusters. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets) is a pathological entity in obstetrics that is related to preeclampsia. Recognition and early treatment are mandatory, because of the high fetal and maternal morbidity and fetal mortality rates. This report features the CT and MRI findings in two patients with HELLP syndrome, upper abdominal pain, and severe liver cell dysfunction. Despite the extensive hepatic abnormalities seen on CT and MRI studies, both patients recovered fully after delivery. The role of imaging studies for diagnosis and treatment planning in the clinical setting of HELLP syndrome is discussed.

Notes: Abstract In previous experiments in tumors we demonstrated that metalloporphyrins are particularly avid for nonviable tumor components. This study was performed to find out wether these agents can be used as MRI contrast agents for the visualization of acute myocardial infarction (MI). A total of 44 rats, 6 normal controls and 38 with occlusive MI (2–24 h old), were used. Gadolinium mesopophyrin (Gd-MP) or manganese totraphenylporphyrin (Mn-TPP) was intravenously injected at doses of 0.1, 0.05, and 0.01 mmol.kg. Three to 24 h after injection, axial and coronal T1-weighted (TR/TE 300/15 ms) spinecho MR images were obtained before and after killing the animals and correlated with triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) histocemical preparations. The Gd-MP content in infarcted and noninfarcted myocardium was measured using inductively coled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) MRI without contrast media could not discern the MI. However, 3–24 h after injection of either Gd-MP or Mn-TPP, the infarcted area was positively stained on MR images. This area matched well witht he negatively TTC-stained area on the heart slices (r = 0.97). The contrast ratios between the infarcted nectrotic myocardium and the noninfarcted regions varied from 150 to 300% depending on the tye of agensts and doses used. Neither false-positive nor false-negative findings were encountered. The metallaporphyrin concentration was more than 10 times higher in the infarcted than in the noninfarcted heart. Metalloporphyrins appear to be promising MRI contrast agents for detection and quantification of necrosis in MI. These preclinical results may open new perspectives in cardiac imaging.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of the study was to investigate whether visual inspection of maximum intensity projection (MIP) images is a reliable method for assessment of the severity of renal artery stenoses (RAS). Therefore, 20 RAS were investigated with helical CT. Native axial images and MIP images were analysed separately or in combination (“two-step method”). A phanton study was performed to investigate the influence of window setting on apparent stenosis severity. Accuracy for diagnosis of 50–69% and 70–99% RAS and the mean inter-observer agreement were 82.5%, 77.5% and 82.5% respectively, using study of MIP images alone, and 100%, 97.5% and 95% using the “two-step method”. The phantom study showed that the apparent severity of vascular stenoses on MIP images depends on the selected window centre values. It is concluded that combined evaluation of both MIP images and native axial images is more reliable than study of MIP images alone for assessing the severity of RAS.

Notes: Abstract. In this paper we compare a semi-automated delineation method with totally manual delineation for area quantification, with respect to efficiency, quality, and intra- and interobserver variability. Liver lesions on 28 CT images were delineated by three observers, twice using completely manual delineation and twice using a semi-automated method. Quantitative comparisons were performed with respect to delineated area and time required for the delineation tasks. Subjective comparisons were performed with respect to efficiency and perceived quality of the semi-automated method. The areas obtained using semi-automated delineation were significantly smaller (11 %) than those obtained using totally manual delineation. Intraobserver and interobserver variability with the semi-automated method were approximately three times lower than with manual delineation. Efficiency of the semi-automated method was subjectively rated favorable, although further improvements are possible. With respect to quality, the semi-automated method was ranked better than the manual method in 73 % of cases.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study was to determine whether the intrarenal resistive index (RI) can be used for the diagnosis of acute obstruction in patients with renal colic and to determine whether the index is time-related. Seventy patients referred to the Emergency Department with acute renal colic and without known associated renal disease underwent duplex Doppler ultrasonography to determine the intrarenal RI at the symptomatic and asymptomatic side. The age range of the patients was 18–72 years. An RI greater than 0.68 and/or an interrenal difference in RI greater than 0.06 and/or an increase in RI of more than 11 % compared with the normal side proved reliable cut-off values to diagnose acute renal obstruction. In addition, time dependency of the increase in RI was noted. No significant differences were observed within the first 6 h after the onset of symptoms. From 6 to 48 h, however, the mean RI in the affected kidney (0.70 ± 0.06; mean ± SD) was significantly different from that in the normal kidney (0.59 ± 0.04) (P 〈 0.001). In the same period the mean difference in RI was 0.08–0.13 (P 〈 0.001). After 48 h the sensitivity of RI dropped substantially. It is concluded that renal duplex Doppler ultrasonography is useful for diagnosing acute renal obstruction between 6 and 48 h after the onset of symptoms.
