Notes: Single-pulse laser ablation of polyimide was investigated by using focused UV-Ar+-laser radiation (λ(approximate)302 nm, 140 ns≤τl≤50 ms) and atomic force microscopy. The results clearly demonstrate that the ablation rates do not depend on the total dose only, but depend as well on the duration of the laser pulses, τl. The experimental results can be interpreted almost quantitatively on the basis of a purely thermal model. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] A standard exercise in elementary quantum mechanics is to describe the properties of an electron confined in a potential well. The solutions of Schrödinger's equation are electron standing waves—or ‘quantum-well’ states—characterized by the quantum number n, the ...

Notes: Abstract. Single-pulse excimer-laser irradiation of poly-ethylene-terephthalate (PET) with fluences around and above the ablation threshold leads to the formation of surface dendrites. The lateral size and the number density of dendrites depend on the laser wavelength and the type and pressure of the ambient atmosphere. The results are discussed on the basis of excimer-laser-induced polymer fragmentation and the redeposition of ablation products.

Notes: Abstract. KrF-laser ablation of pressed polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) targets is accompanied by the ejection of submicron- to micron-sized particles. Collected ejecta consist of four basic particle morphologies ranging from small particles 50–200 nm in diameter to larger particles ∼10 μm in diameter. Many particles carry electric charge as measured by using charged electrodes and by the Millikan technique. Thin PTFE films deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) from the same targets onto heated Si substrates are highly crystalline and show only a minor but detectable increase of defects compared with the target material. The transferred particulates mainly consist of long PTFE molecule chains. The low molecular weight material that is also transferred to the substrate mainly either links with other low molecular weight material or evaporates during deposition.

Notes: Abstract.  4 f Photoemission (PE) spectra from magnetically ordered rare-earth materials using circularly polarized X-rays exhibit strong Magnetic Circular Dichroism (MCD), i.e., the intensities of the individual multiplet lines depend on the relative orientation of sample magnetization and photon spin. On the example of the well- resolved Tb 4 f PE multiplet, it is shown that in relevant cases 4 f PE lines are esse ntially only observed for one magnetization direction, either parallel or antiparallel to the photon spin. These large MCD effects in 4 f PE open new perspectives in the analysis of surface and thin-film magnetism and provide a sensor for the degree of circular polarization of soft X-rays over a wide photon-energy range. To demonstrate the potential of MCD in 4 f PE as a magnetometer, we studied Gd(0001) and Tb(0001), where the magnetization of the topmost atomic (0001) layer can be easily separated from the bulk magnetization via the surface core-level shift. In multicomponent magnetic thin films containing different rare-earth elements, 4 f PE allows to monitor magnetization in an element-specific way, e.g., in case of the hetero-magnetic interface 1ML Eu/Gd(0001).

Notes: Abstract.  Surface topology changes in polyimide induced by single UV-laser pulses with pulse durations between 140 ns and 5 μs are investigated by means of atomic force microscopy. With increasing fluence three different regimes are found: (a) real material removal (ablation), (b) swelling of the irradiated area above the level of the untreated surface (hump formation) and (c) lowering of the irradiated area below the level of the untreated surface (dent formation). A detailed description of these topology changes is given and different formation processes are discussed.

Notes: Abstract.  High-quality Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO) films were grown by means of pulsed-laser deposition on 10° off-axis oriented (0 0 1) SrTiO3 substrates. The films exhibit a step-like morphology and they are properly oriented along the (0 0 1) direction. Their normal-state resistivity measured along the tilt (off-axis (1 0 0) direction of the substrate) was, typically, 260 times higher than that along the (0 1 0) direction. Such films reveal a transverse Seebeck-effect which significantly exceeds that observed with YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO).

Notes: Abstract. Single-shot laser ablation of polyimide has been investigated with UV-Ar $^+$ -laser radiation ( $\lambda =$ 270–315 nm) for pulse lengths between 140 ns and 5 $\mu$ s. The irradiated polymer surface was studied with respect to its morphology and ablated depth by means of atomic force microscopy. The dependence of the ablation threshold on laser pulse-length and intensity can be tentatively interpreted on the basis of a thermal process and a (thermal or non-thermal) mechanism which diminishes the activation energy for the desorption of species from the surface.
