    Notes: Abstract  During segmentation of the mouse hindbrain (d8.0–8.5 pc), expression of the gap junction gene connexin31 (cx31) is precisely restricted to rhombomeres (r) 3 and 5. Shortly afterwards, during the turning process, cx31 expression in rhombomere 3 decreases and is no longer detectable at d9.5 pc, whereas expression in rhombomere 5 is maintained until about d10.0 pc. So far, cx31 is the first gap junction gene found to be expressed in rhombomeres. Its precise segmental and temporal expression pattern may reflect a critical requirement of cx31 channels for these odd numbered rhombomeres to acquire distinct cell identities.

    Notes: Abstract A multilevel optimization approach applicable to nonhierarchic coupled systems is presented. The approach includes a general treatment of design (or behaviour) constraints and coupling constraints at the discipline level through the use of norms. Three different types of norms are examined - the max norm, the Kreisselmeier-Steinhauser (KS) norm, and theℓ p norm. The max norm is recommended. The approach is demonstrated on a class of hub frame structures that simulate multidisciplinary systems. The max norm is shown to produce system-level constraint functions which are nonsmooth. A cutting-plane algorithm is presented, which adequately deals with the resulting corners in the constraint functions. The algorithm is tested on hub frames with an increasing number of members (which simulate disciplines), and the results are summarized.

    Notes: Abstract. Gastroschisis (abdominal wall defects) occurs with a high frequency in the mouse inbred strain HLG compared with C57BL/6J mice. The risk of gastroschisis increases significantly after exposure to irradiation with X-rays during preimplantation development and follows a recessive mode of inheritance for the HLG susceptibility alleles. We have used a backcross strategy and genome-wide microsatellite typing to chromosomally map this trait. A suggestive linkage for a locus responsible for radiation-induced gastroschisis (Rigs1) was found in a region of mouse Chromosome 7.

    Notes: Abstract. Rbt (Rabo torcido) is a new semidominant mouse mutant with a variety of skeletal abnormalities. Heterozygous Rbt mutants display homeotic anteroposterior patterning problems along the axial skeleton that resemble Polycomb group and trithorax gene mutations. In addition, the Rbt mutant displays strong similarities to the phenotype observed in Ts (Tail-short), indicating also a homeotically transformed phenotype in these mice. We have mapped the Rbt locus to an interval of approximately 6 cM on mouse Chromosome (Chr) 11 between microsatellite markers D11Mit128 and D11Mit103. The Ts locus was mapped within a shorter interval of approximately 3 cM between D11Mit128 and D11Mit203. This indicates that Rbt and Ts may be allelic mutations. Sox9, the human homolog of which is responsible for the skeletal malformation syndrome campomelic dysplasia, was mapped proximal to D11Mit128. It is, therefore, unlikely that Ts and Rbt are mouse models for this human skeletal disorder.

    Notes: Summary Interest in the potential climatic consequences of the continued buildup of anthropo-generated greenhouse gases has led many scientists to conduct extensive climate change studies at the global, hemispheric, and regional scales. In this investigation, analyses are conducted on long-term historical climate records from the Arabian Peninsula region. Over the last 100 years, temperatures in the region increased linearly by 0.63 °C. However, virtually all of this warming occurred from 1911–1935, and over the most recent 50 years, the Arabian Peninsula region has cooled slightly. In addition, the satellite-based measurements of lower-tropospheric temperatures for the region do not show any statistically significant warming over the period 1979–1991. While many other areas of the world are showing a decrease in the diurnal temperature range, the Arabian Peninsula region reveals no evidence of a long-term change in this parameter. Precipitation records for the region show a slight, statistically insignificant decrease over the past 40 years. The results from this study should complement the mass of information that has resulted from similar regional climate studies conducted in the United States, Europe, and Australia.
