Notes: Abstract A multi-disciplinary approach was used to investigate the indoor environment of a modern museum building, and its suitability for the conservation of the collection therein. Climate, gaseous and particulate pollution and the concentrations of bacteria were measured in summer and winter campaigns. While the environment overall was found to be an acceptable one, a number of drawbacks were highlighted, the most serious of these being the large temperature and humidity fluctuations that occurred in the summer.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary We report a case of a 60 year old male who presented with a therapy resistant endophthalmitis which led to an evisceratio bulbi. Histologically, a granulomatous inflammation was present, in which acid-fast bacilli could not be detected. Molecular genetic examination by means of polymerase-chain-reaction technique (PCR) of the routinely processed tissue material revealed the diagnosis of an atypical mycobacterial infection, because DNA specific for atypical mycobacteria was detected. This example shows that PCR technique provides a useful tool in the diagnosis of mycobaterial infections as an adjunct to surgical pathology.

Notes: Based on published results and investigations done for this study, chemotaxonomic characteristics of all validly described species of the genus Sphingomonas, as well as unnamed strains of this genus and related genera such as Rhizomonas and Blastomonas, are presented. All representatives of this group, here designated as sphingomonads, contain ubiquinone (Q-10). The two different polyamine patterns characterized either by the predominant polyamine sym-homospermidine or spermidine separate the sphingomonads into two major groups. Complex polar lipid profiles were found in sphingomonads in addition to the characteristic compound sphingoglycolipid. Identical profiles were found only in a few phylogenetically highly related species. Common to all sphingomonads is a fatty acid composition with 2-hydroxy fatty acids (14:0 2OH in all currently recognized species) and the lack of 3-hydroxy acids, which distinguishes them from taxa outside this group. Qualitative and quantitative differences in the fatty acid compositions, in several cases, were also suitable for identification at the species level. Thus, the differences in the chemotaxonomic characteristics demonstrate that the analyses of these low molecular weight cell compounds are suitable for classification of sphingomonads.

Notes: Summary IOL implantation in childhood is still controversial. Intention: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate functional results and complications in children after IOL implantation. Methods and results: Posterior chamber IOLs were implanted in 52 eyes of 45 children. Cataract extraction was necessary because of traumatic, congenital/developmental and secondary lens opacities. Nine IOLs were implanted in children between the ages of 1.9 and 4 years, 17 IOLs from 4 to 8 years and 26 IOLs in patients 8 to 14.3 years old. In 38 of the 52 eyes (73 %) vision improved after the surgery. Fifty-four percent had an acuity of at least 0.5. The functional results of children more than 8 years old were superior to those of younger patients. Children with traumatic cataracts had better visual acuities than those with other types of cataract. Except for secondary capsular opacities (75 %) that could not be prevented by performing a primary posterior capsulotomy or capsulectomy and iris capture (31 %), postoperative complications were rare. Conclusion: Favorable functional results can be achieved by IOL implantation in children with cataracts. Many patients require secondary surgical procedures because of capsular opacities and iris capture.
