Notes: Filamentous actin (F-actin), which occurs abundantly and ubiquitously in living mechanisms such as muscle, nonmuscle cells, and cytoskeleton, exhibits a liquid crystal polymorphism as its concentration is increased. The double-stranded, helical F-actin filaments are 1–70 μm long in our samples. The chirality of the filaments is consistent with the experimental observation of the characteristic cholesteric fingerprint and uniform textures. In addition to the chiral nematic phase, our optical microscopic studies show the occurrence of tilted chiral smectic phases, e.g., smectic C*, I*, or F*, and a smectic B phase. Measurement of optical rotatory dispersion in the cholesteric phase confirms the prediction of the de Vries equation describing the optical rotatory dispersion behavior for cholesterics. The observed lyotropic polymorphism is consistent with the Flory lattice model and a semiflexible polymer mesogen model of F-actin. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Cystic teratoma of the pancreas is an extremely rare entity: only 11 cases have been described so far in the world literature. We report the 12th case, in a 4-month-old girl.

Notes: Abstract Although complications of intraperitoneal drainage are relatively common, to our knowledge there has not been a reported case of evisceration of bowel through an intraperitoneal drainage wound a few hours after removal of a corrugated rubber drain. We report one such case in a 75-day-old child.

Notes: Abstract In India, mangroves occupy 6740 km2 of which the Mahanadi delta andBhitarkanika mangrove forests of Orissa cover 191.44 km2, most of whichhas been severely overexploited. World wide concern to conserve mangrovesnecessitated propagation of mangroves to re-establish them on barren andswampy land along tidal creeks around Paradeep port of Orissa. Avicenniaofficinalis, Aegiceras corniculatum, Bruguiera parviflora, B. sexangula,Ceriops decandra, Excoecaria agallocha, Heritiera fomes, Kandelia candel,Rhizophora mucronata, Sonneratia apetala were vegetatively propagated andplanted over 10 ha of degraded salt-marshy wetlands of Mahanadi delta inpure and mixed stands depending on the intensity and the frequency of tidalinundation at the experimental site. Survival was significantly higher(80%) in S. apetala followed by A. officinalis, R. mucronata, K.candel and H. fomes (70–75%). S. apetala recorded the maximumgrowth in height (3.0 m after 2 years) whereas C. decandra showed theminimum growth (0.5 m). Growth performance was better with plants in mixedstands than the plantation with single species. This gives us hope topropagate and re-establish mangroves for conservation in scientificallymanaged plantations in a physiologically arid environment.

Notes: Abstract Somatic embryogenesis was achieved in callus cultures derived from immature cotyledonary explants ofHardwickia binata Roxb., a multipurpose leguminous tree, on semisolid modified Murashige and Skoog's (mMS) medium containing 2900 mg/l potassium nitrate (KNO3) supplemented with 4.64 µM kinetin (Kn) and 5.37µM a-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). Somatic embryos proliferated rapidly after transfer to MS basal medium supplemented with 2052.6 µM L-glutamine and 0.084 µM gibberellic acid (GA3). Maturation of somatic embryos was achieved on half-strength MS basal medium supplemented with 1.23 µM IBA and 2% (w/v) sucrose. Histological studies confirmed different developmental stages of somatic embryogenesis inHardwickia binata.

Notes: Abstract Somatic embryogenesis was achieved in callus cultures dervied from 40-day-old semimature zygotic embryos ofDalbergia sissoo on semi-solid Murashige and Skoog (MS) salts and vitamins supplemented with 0.46–1.16 μM kinetin, 6.78–9.04 μM 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) and 30 g/1 sucrose. Somatic embryos proliferated rapidly by secondary somatic embryogenesis after transfer to half-strength basal MS medium supplemented with 0.46-1.16 μM kinetin and 6.78–9.04 μM 2,4-D with 2% (w/v) sucrose. The light-green somatic embryos germinated on half-strength MS salts and vitamins supplemented with 0.5 mg/1 abscisic acid and 2% (w/v) sucrose. The developmental stages of somatic embryogenesis were studied by light and scanning electron microscopy.
