Notes: Abstract Polarization spectroscopy has been used to investigate the electronic bands of OH (A 2 Σ-X 2 Π) and NH (A 3 Π-X 3 Σ) radicals generated in atmospheric pressure flames. The pump-beam intensity dependence of the polarization-spectroscopy signals of isolated lines in theR branches has been studied. It was found that significant saturation is noticeable for pump-beam intensities as low as 0.1 MW/cm2. A detailed theoretical description inluding laser-bandwidth convolutions has been developed to model unsaturated polarization spectra of OH and NH. For OH, temperature evaluations have been performed in methane/air flames from fits to experimentalR 1 band head spectral structures. The results are critically dependent on the degree of saturation in experimental spectra, instrumental bandwidth and the assumed coupling cases in the calculation of line-strength parameters. It is shown that saturation leads to an error of more than 60% in the temperature evaluation when a pump-beam intensity of 1 MW/cm2 is used.

Notes: 2 Σ-X2Π(0,0) band system. High resolution polarization spectra were also recorded in the same flame using a conventional, frequency scanned, narrow linewidth dye laser. Absorption effects were found to produce significant systematic errors in the temperatures derived from the unsaturated spectra produced by both multiplex and narrow linewidth scanning techniques. After correction for absorption effects, temperatures were derived from the single-shot multiplex spectra with a precision of 4% which agreed well with values obtained from scanned spectra and from the calculated adiabatic temperatures.

Notes: 2 ∑–X2Π(0,0) band of OH has been studied in premixed methane/air flames using a cw Ar+ laser probe. Measurements of flame temperature and pressure were derived from fits of theoretical simulations to the observed time variation of signals over a pressure range of 10 to 40 bar and for different stoichiometry that were in agreement with independent measurements using N2 CARS and predictions of a one-dimensional flame calculation. Broadband DFWM spectra in the same band of OH were observed up to a pressure of 9 bar, above which signals were obtained only from scattering from thermal gratings.
