Notes: Microstructure, soft magnetic properties, and applications of high resistive Fe-M-O (M=Hf, Zr, rare-earth metals) were studied. The Fe-M-O films are composed of bcc nanograins and amorphous phases with larger amounts of M and O elements which chemically combine each other. Consequently, the amorphous phases have high electrical resistivity. The compositional dependence of magnetic properties, electrical resistivity, and structure have been almost clarified. For example, the high magnetization of 1.3 T, high permeability of 1400 at 100 MHz and the high electrical resistivity of 4.1 μΩ m are simultaneously obtained for as-deposited Fe62Hf11O27 nanostructured film fabricated by rf reactive sputtering in a static magnetic field. Furthermore, Co addition to Fe-M-O films improves the frequency characteristics mainly by the increase in the crystalline anisotropy of the nanograins. The Co44.3Fe19.1Hf14.5O22.1 film exhibits the quality factor (Q=μ′/μ′′) of 61 and the μ′ of 170 at 100 MHz as well as the high Is of 1.1 T. This frequency characteristics is considered to be superior to the other films already reported. The films also exhibit high corrosion resistance in an isotonic sodium chloride solution. Therefore, these films enable us to realize the high-frequency magnetic devices, such as thin-film inductors and transformers for microswitching converters and ultrahigh-density recording heads. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Fluorine containing-cyclohexadienes (FCHDs), 3,3,6,6,-tetrafluoro-1,4-cyclohexadiene (1a), 1-chloro-3,3,6,6-tetrafluoro-1,4-cyclohexadiene (3a) and 1-bromo-3,3,6,6-tetrafluoro-1,4-cyclohexadiene (4a), were isolated in pure states with high yields (ca. 80%) by the preparative scale electrochemical fluorination of 1,4-difluorobenzene (1), 1-chloro-2,5-difluorobenzene (3) and 1-bromo-2,5-difluorobenzene (4), respectively, in Et4NF · mHF (Et = C2H5: m = 4.0, 4.45 and 4.7) at a platinum anode, followed by extraction and fractional distillation. The electrochemical fluorination of 1,2,4-trifluorobenzene (2) yielded both 1,3,3,6,6-pentafluoro-1,4-cyclohexadiene (2a) and 2,5,5,6,6-pentafluoro-1,3-cyclohexadiene (2b) with high yield (ca. 90%). Some of (2a) was also isolated in a pure state by fractional distillation. Each substrate compound (1–4) was fluorinated to the corresponding FCHDs with an almost quantitative yield when 2.0–2.1 faraday (per mol of substrate) of electricity was passed.

Notes: Abstract The pseudo-binary phase diagram between Y 0.5 Nd 0.5 Ba 2 Cu 3 O x and Ba 3 Cu 10 O 13 has been in-situ observed using high-temperature optical microscopy. It has been observed that the liquidus line is very narrow both in composition and temperature, which suggested that Y 0.5 Nd 0.5 Ba 2 Cu 3 O x crystals could only be grown from a peritectic melt consisting of (Y 0.5 Nd 0.5 ) 2 BaCuO 5 and a liquid. The crystal growth of Y 0.5 Nd 0.5 Ba 2 Cu 3 O x was performed in a tubular furnace under a horizontal temperature gradient using alumina crucibles. Well faceted Y 0.5 Nd 0.5 Ba 2 Cu 3 O x crystals up to a size of 7.3 x 5,8 x 1.28 mm 3 were grown.

Notes: Abstract. Antibody against cockroach trehalase inhibitor was prepared and tested against the plasma of adult locusts and larval silkworms to determine whether these species possess a similar protein. An immunopositive response was elicited in both species. Studies using immunogold labeling show that adult cockroaches have trehalase inhibitor protein in granules of plasmatocytes and in oenocytoid-like structures. Localization of the immunoreactive protein with trehalase inhibitor antibody in locust hemocytes indicated that the protein is also contained in the granules of plasmatocytes. However, in the hemolymph of silkworm larvae, the immunoreactive protein was found only in the spherules of spherulocytes. The results suggest that insect hemolymph commonly contains trehalase inhibitor both in plasma and in certain hemocytes.
