Notes: In this note we provide an elementary proof of the following generalization of Holsztyński's theorem [2]: If there exists a linear isometry T of a completely regular subspace A of C0 (X) into C0 (Y), then there is a subset Y0 of Y and a continuous map h of Y0 onto X and a continuous map a:Y0→K, |a| = 1, such that (Tf)(y) =a(y)f(h(y)) for all y∈Y and all f∈A. As a consequence, we extend to C0(X)-spaces an old result by Myers [3].

Notes: Abstract The subcommissural organ (SCO) is a brain gland that secretes glycoproteins into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). It is an ancient and conserved secretory structure of the brain, developing very early in ontogeny. However, the function of the SCO is unknown. The secretory cells of the SCO are arranged into a single or double, irregularly shaped layer located at the interface of the CSF and nervous tissue. This has prevented its selective surgical destruction. The present investigation was designed to destroy the secretory cells of 30-day-old expiants of bovine SCO by use of an immunological approach. A membrane preparation enriched with plasma membrane of the secretory cells of the bovine SCO was obtained. This preparation was further processed to separate the structural proteins. A similar procedure was applied to obtain a fraction of integral proteins of the plasma membrane of a nonsecretory ciliated ependyma. Antisera were prepared against both preparations of integral proteins. The antiserum against the fraction obtained from the SCO cells immunostained the plasma membrane of the bovine SCO cells and in immunoblot it reacted with several proteins of the membrane preparation from SCO cells. When added to the culture medium this antibody bound to the apical plasma membrane of the secretory ependyma of the bovine SCO kept in culture; it caused the lysis of these cells when used together with complement. None of these properties were displayed by the antiserum raised against the integral proteins of the plasma membrane of the ciliated ependyma. This antiserum, however, immunostained the bovine ciliated ependyma neighboring the SCO. These results indicate that immunological surgery of the SCO in living animals may be possible to achieve.

Notes: Abstract Four patients colonized/infected with carbapenem-resistant strains ofAcinetobacter baumannii are described. The first patient had a decubitus ulcer infection and had been on intravenous imipenem for 50 days. Two other patients, from whomAcinetobacter baumannii was isolated from urine, were hospitalized in the same ward as the first patient. The fourth patient had been mechanically ventilated in the intensive care unit for 4 month and had nosocomial pneumonia. He had been on intravenous meropenem for 1 month. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of imipenem (128 mg/l) and meropenem (〉128 mg/l) were the same for the isolates from the first three patients, and all of these isolates had the same repetitive extragenic palindromic polymerase chain reaction (rep-PCR) pattern. The MICs of carbapenems were lower for patient 4's isolate, which also had a different rep-PCR pattern. Beta-lactamases that hydrolyzed imipenem were detected in all four isolates; isoelectric points were 8.6−7.7 in the first three isolates and 6.8−7 in the fourth isolate.

Notes: Abstract Although the presence of phosphorylcholine (PC) inTrichinella is well established, the structures of the TSL-4 antigens that bear this epitope are unknown. A subset of TSL-4 antigens (TSL-8 antigens) has been reported to be absent from the surface of first-stageT. spiralis larvae. We report experiments with a monoclonal antibody (mAb US2) developed in mice with a relative inability to produce antibodies to PC. In immunoblotting, mAb US2 and anti-PC mAb (BH8) showed apparently identical binding patterns. In addition, we used an immunogold double-labeling technique to study the anatomical distribution of the epitopes recognized by these mAbs; the results obtained indicate close colocalization of epitopes for BH8 and US2 in tissues ofT. spiralis first-stage larvae. On the basis of these results, we suggest that US2 probably binds to allT. spiralis TSL-4 antigens, including TSL-8 antigens. We also clarify some conflicting previous reports on the distribution of PC immunoreactivity in first-stage larvae ofT. spiralis.

Notes: Abstract Humoral and cellular immune responses to Fasciola hepatica excretory-secretory products (ESPs) in primary and secondary experimental infections in goats were studied. Primary infection induced the development of chronic subclinical fascioliasis that did not affect the establishment of flukes coming from the secondary infection, as the same percentages of recovered flukes were found in both groups. The specific IgG response to F. hepatica ESPs was similar in primary and secondary infections; challenge flukes did not induce any modification in the IgG response. The specific lymphocyte response to F. hepatica ESPs was absent in most of the infected goats, both primarily and secondarily infected. A modulation of the nonspecific cellular responses to mitogens was also observed. All infected goats showed a reduced proliferative response to concanavalin A and phytohemagglutinin. According to our results, humoral and cellular responses to F. hepatica ESPs in goats have no protective effect on the establishment of flukes and the development of disease in either primary or secondary infections.
