Notes: A patient with skin infection due to Mycobacterium avium is reported. A 9–year–old female had 10 subcutaneous nodules and two ulcers on the abdomen and legs. She had no medical history of systemic disease, skin disease or immunosuppressive therapy. Cultures of a biopsy specimen and of aspirated seropurulent fluid in nodules showed acid–fast bacteria, identified as M. avium by the DNA–DNA hybridization method. We treated her with a combination of surgery and the antibiotics, cycloserine, isoniazid and clarithromycin.

Notes: Infrared attenuated total reflection spectra from thin SiO2 films sandwiched between a Ge prism and a Si substrate were investigated. The measurements were performed in the range of Si-O-Si stretching vibrations and compared with calculated spectra using bulk values for the SiO2 dielectric function. This comparison enabled confirmation of the experimentally observed peak broadening and peak shift of the longitudinal-optical-phonon mode at ∼1250 cm−1 for films thicker than 30 A(ring) by using the exact expression for calculating p-polarized spectra. It is also shown that the linear approximation for vibrational spectroscopy in this frequency range is only valid for thicknesses less than 15 A(ring). © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The first subband energy at the valence band of self-assembled silicon quantum dots grown by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition on ultrathin SiO2/Si substrates has been measured as an energy shift at the top of the valence band density of states by using high-resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The systematic shift of the valence band maximum towards higher binding energy with decreasing the dot size is shown to be consistent with theoretical prediction. The charging effects of the silicon dots and the SiO2 layer by photoelectron emission during the measurements have been taken into account in determining the valence-band-edge energy. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Chemical shifts of Si–Hx (x=1,2) species on Si surfaces obtained by ex situ chemical treatment have been evaluated by high-resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at a take-off angle of 5°. Optimizing the water rinse and sample loading conditions enables identification of the Si–Hx components of the Si 2p core-level spectra, whose intensities display strong dependence on crystallographic orientation and surface treatment. NH4F-treated Si(111) exhibits almost exclusive monohydride termination which induces a chemical shift of 250 meV relative to the bulk component. On the other hand, 4.5% HF-treated Si(111) and 1% HF-treated Si(100) surfaces show increased dihydride termination with an associated shift of 480 meV. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Nanometer-scale Si quantum dots have been spontaneously fabricated on SiO2 by controlling the early stages of low-pressure chemical vapor deposition from pure silane. The tunneling current through Au/1 nm-SiO2/a single Si quantum dot/1 nm-SiO2/n+-Si(100) double-barrier structures has exhibited the clear current bump or negative conductance at 300 K with a peak current to valley ratio as high as 10. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background: Anti-ulcer agents exert various functional effects on gastric epithelial cells. Aim: The effects of a novel gastro-cytoprotective agent (rebamipide) on epithelial restoration following bile acid damage were assessed using primary cultured rabbit gastric epithelial cells. Methods: Rebamipide was added to complete confluent cell sheets with deoxycholic acid just after creating a cell-free wound (2 mm2). The restoration was monitored and analysed by phase contrast microscopy and an image analyser for 48 h. The migration speed was measured during the initial 3 h after wounding. Cell proliferation was detected by staining for bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) at 12-h intervals. The labelling index was calculated per unit area. The major cytoskeletal protein actin was detected by immunohistochemical staining. Results: In the controls, restoration was completed 48 h following wounding. Deoxycholic acid retarded this process. The addition of rebamipide to deoxycholic acid abolished the bile acid-induced retardation. The migration speed was 26 μm/h in the controls, 15 μm/h in the deoxycholic acid group and 27 μm/h in the deoxycholic acid plus rebamipide group. In the controls, BrdU-positive cells, which were rarely detected in the initial 24 h, were maximal at 36 h (labelling index 1.7%). In the deoxycholic acid group, proliferation was inhibited (peak labeling index; 0.5% at 48 h). Actin-containing stress fibres were detected throughout the cells and the periphery of the lamellipodia in the controls, and were disrupted in the deoxycholic acid-treated group. Rebamipide prevented these effects. Conclusions: Deoxycholic acid significantly retarded restoration by the inhibition of both cell migration and proliferation, potentially through an effect on the cytoskeleton. Rebamipide protected the mucosal cells from bile acid mediated injury.

Notes: Summary A new 18 bp insertion mutation in the gene for the α subunit of pyruvate dehydrogenase (E1α) was found in a female patient with congenital lactic acidaemia. Cultured skin fibroblasts and Epstein—Barr virus-transformed lymphoblastoid cells from this patient showed decreased and normal pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDHC) activity, respectively. This 18 bp insertion was ade novo mutation, because it was not present in her parents. Although this female patient was heterozygous for the normal and the mutant alleles, 97% of cultured skin fibroblasts expressed the mutant allele, while 100% of cultured lymphoblastoid cells, 94% of peripheral blood lymphocytes and 98% of IL-2-activated T-cells expressed the normal allele. These results suggest that in this patient the X chromosome containing the normal allele was predominantly inactivated in fibroblasts and the X chromosome containing the mutant allele was predominantly inactivated in lymphocytes. The diagnosis of E1α deficiency is usually established by measurement of PDHC activity and the level of immunoreactive proteins. However, these methods are not sufficient to diagnose the disorder in female patients with E1α deficiency due to differential inactivation of the X chromosome. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new method to firmly establish the diagnosis of E1α deficiency.

Notes: Abstract Polonium-210 in phosphoric acid has been recognized as a significant source of alpha contamination of processed Si-wafers for memory devices of computer. In the present work, a convenient method was developed for the determination of trace210Po in phosphoric acid of high purity. For the determination,209Po was used as a yield tracer. The present method consists of (1) addition of the tracer to 5 ml aliquot of phosphoric acid sample, (2) pH adjustment (to 2) of the sample solution to make up electrolytic solution, (3) electrodeposition for the simultaneous achievement of Po separation and preparation of counting source on stainless-steel disc, and (4) alpha-ray spectrometry. By the developed method, more than 95% of Po was separated from phosphoric acid sample onto counting disc. The minimum detectable radioactivity of210Po in 5 ml of phosphoric acid was about 0.03 mBq by counting the electrodeposited alpha-activity for 10 days under a counting efficiency of ≈30%.
