    Notes: We present high accuracy measurements of gain, loss, and transparency energy in long-wavelength semiconductors based on a hybrid approach using the fundamental relationship between the gain and the spontaneous emission spectra. Independent measurements of optical gain, transparency energy, and loss show the accuracy and validity of this technique. These results are compared with those obtained by the non-Markovian gain model with many-body effects under the spontaneous emission transformation method. It is found that the hybrid approach for the gain spectrum alleviates many of the problems related to the poor signal to noise ratio in the amplified-spontaneous emission near and below the band edge. The theoretical spectra compare well with the measured spectra for both the transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Edge-defined film-fed-growth (EFG) Si is investigated using deep-level transient spectroscopy and surface photovoltage. An impurity energy level of CrB was found at 0.27 eV above the valence band in EFG Si contaminated with Cr. The Cr diffusion coefficient in EFG Si was obtained as 2×10−17 cm2/s at room temperature using association and dissociation of CrB pairs after a 210 °C dissociation anneal. Most of the deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) spectra are not analyzable with conventional methods due to abnormally broad peaks. DLTS spectra of as-grown EFG Si are modeled using a Gaussian distribution of impurity energy states. The simulated DLTS peaks agree well with measured data explaining the origin of the deep-level impurities of EFG Si. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A modified Fabry–Perot resonance technique using a single cavity was proposed to obtain the propagation loss of the optical waveguide. The propagation loss as well as the facet reflectance were measured without sequential cleavage for a GaAs/AlGaAs strip-loaded waveguide based on the contrast ratios of the reflected and transmitted interference patterns. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) measurements in Mg-doped GaN epitaxial layers grown on sapphire substrates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy have been performed in order to investigate the process of donor–acceptor pair (DAP) recombination. The PL intensity of the DAP peak decreases below 35 K, and then it increases as the temperature increases in the temperature range between 35 and 100 K. This behavior originates from the interaction between two different Mg-related traps, one shallow and the other deep level. The ionization energies of the shallow trap and the deep level trap determined from the calculations and the PL experiments are 126 and 160 meV, respectively. The DAP recombination process suggests that holes are caught in the shallow trap and that they subsequently transfer, via a tunneling process, from the shallow trap to the deep trap, where recombination with electrons takes place. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Thin films of perovskite manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 were grown epitaxially on SrTiO3(100), MgO(100) and LaAlO3(100) substrates by the pulsed laser deposition method. Microscopic structures of these thin film samples as well as a bulk sample were fully determined by x-ray diffraction measurements. The unit cells of the three films have different shapes, i.e., contracted tetragonal, cubic, and elongated tetragonal for SrTiO3, MgO, and LaAlO3, respectively, while the unit cell of the bulk is cubic. It is found that the samples with a cubic unit cell show smaller peak magnetoresistance at low fields ((approximately-less-than)1 T) than the noncubic ones do. The present result demonstrates that the magnetoresistance of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 at low fields can be controlled by lattice distortion via externally imposed strains. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary Growth and morphogenesis of the prostate involves mesenchymal-epithelial interactions. Transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) is one growth factor that may play a role in these paracrine interactions. We have localized TGF-β1 by molecular and immunohistochemical analysis in the developing mouse prostate. Accumulations of TGF-β1 protein were localized in the mesenchyme surrounding ductules in fetal and neonatal prostate. Previous studies in the mouse prostate reconstitution (MPR) model system have localized accumulations of TGF-β1 to regions of oncogene-induced abnormalities. In surgically excised adult human prostate tissues, localized accumulations of TGF-β1 are associated with prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Intracellular TGF-β1 was more often associated with stromal cells in BPH and with neoplastic epithelial cells in prostate cancer. The production and accumulation of TGF-β1 appears to involve interactions between mesenchymal and epithelial cells. Further experimental studies may clarify the relationships between TGF-β1 and abnormal prostatic growth.

    Notes: Abstract. The radiographic findings of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) are various. The typical findings are diffuse, bilateral, symmetric, finely granular, or reticular infiltrates. In patients taking aerosol pentamidine, atypical findings may be the first manifestation. One interesting radiologic finding of PCP is that the pneumonia may spare the irradiated lung. We report PCP developed in a patient undergoing irradiation for lung cancer. High-resolution CT revealed diffuse, bilateral, and symmetric ground-glass opacities with septal thickening in both lungs; however, the radiation port was spared and appeared as the “photographic negative of post-radiation pneumonia.” The distribution of the pneumonic infiltrates was altered by radiotherapy.

    Notes: Bacillus thuringiensis subsp tochigiensis HD868 was identified as a bacteriocin producer which exhibited a bactericidal effect against closely related species. This bacteriocin designated as tochicin, was partially purified by 75% ammonium sulfate precipitation followed by subsequent dialysis. This partially purified tochicin showed a narrow antibacterial spectrum of activity against most of 20 typical B. thuringiensis strains and a strain of B. cereus, but not against other bacteria and yeasts tested. The antibacterial activity of tochicin on sensitive indicator cells disappeared completely by proteinase K treatment (1 mg ml−1), which indicates its proteinaceous nature. Tochicin was very stable throughout the range of pH 3.0–9.0 and was relatively heat-stable at 90°C, but bacteriocin activity was not detected after boiling for 30 min. The relationship between cell growth and bacteriocin production was studied in a semi-defined medium. Tochicin activity was detected at the mid-log growth phase, reached the maximum at the early stationary phase, but decreased after the stationary phase. Direct detection of tochicin activity on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel suggested it has an apparent molecular mass of about 10.5 kDa. Tochicin exhibited a bactericidal activity against B. thuringiensis subsp thompsoni HD522 in phosphate buffer (pH 7.0).

    Notes: Abstract  Transgenic cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) plants of a Texas cultivar CUBQHRPIS were obtained using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation coupled with the use of shoot-apex explants. After inoculation with A. tumefaciens strain LBA 4404 containing the pBI121 plasmid, regeneration of primary plants was carried out in a medium containing kanamycin (100  mg l-1). Progeny obtained by selfing were germinated in the greenhouse and selected for expression of the T-DNA marker gene encoding neomycin phospho-transferase II (NPTII) by painting kanamycin (2%) on the leaves. Plants that survived the leaf painting were analyzed by DNA blots. Evidence for integration of the transgene (GUS) was observed in two successive generations from the regenerants (T0). The transformed plants appeared to have more than one copy of the T-DNA.
