    Notizen: The energy loss in multifilamentary superconducting tapes has been measured for various orientations of the external ac magnetic field. When the ac loss in parallel and perpendicular fields is known, the loss at intermediate field angles can be predicted over a wide range of field amplitudes. The prediction is based upon the following assumptions: For low-field amplitudes, the current patterns that would be induced in the tape by the parallel and perpendicular field components can be summed. For high-field amplitudes, the tape only carries the current pattern induced by the perpendicular field component. These assumptions are supported by theory. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The early state of spinodal decomposition was studied by small angle neutron scattering in the critical mixture of the isotopic blend deutero-polystyrene/polystyrene (d-PS/PS) of equal molecular volume of 1.42×106 cm3/mol in a temperature range 12 K≤||Tc−T||≤82 K. This process can be described by the relaxation between two static structure factors, S(Q) representing the equilibrium values of the system in the mixed state and at the temperature where phase separation occurs. The time evolution of the relaxation process is described by the dynamical structure factor, L(Q,t) which depends on the dynamic properties of the mixture. It will be shown that the static structure factor of a mixed system can also be determined in the unstable two-phase region during the early state of spinodal decomposition. Consistent values for the Flory–Huggins parameter were found in comparison with a lower molecular d-PS/PS sample and, therefore, a lower critical temperature which was even smaller than the phase separation temperatures of the present system.The observed time evolution of the fluctuation modes is nonexponential. Therefore, it was originally supposed that internal modes of the coil come into play. The analysis of the data with an ansatz by Akcasu, which takes internal modes into account showed, however, that the phase separation in the experimental range of wave number and time is dominated by the centre of mass diffusion as in the C–H–C case and the nonexponential behavior was attributed to a time dependent increase of the "range'' of the Onsager coefficient. A range of the Onsager coefficient larger than the radius of gyration of a single coil is predicted in case of entangled polymers. However, no time dependence was predicted so far. The evaluated diffusion constants follow an Arrhenius behavior and are consistent with earlier studies. They show a D0∝N−2 scaling consistent with reptation. A further result is the observation of a second order peak in the structure factor already in the early times of spinodal decomposition. So far, this was only attributed to the late state of spinodal decomposition. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Abstract We studied 32 consecutive patients with known or suspected cerebrovascular abnormalities studied with spiral CT following a intravenous bolus injection of iodinated contrast medium with a power injector. Flow was 3 or 4 ml/s. In an attempt to define the appropriate delay time and scan duration a cranial angio-CT without table increment was performed on 10 patients. Enhancement was measured by manually placed regions of interest within the left middle cerebral artery and the inferior sagittal sinus. All patients except one had intraarterial angiography (DSA) for comparison. In 6 patients with an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) follow-up was possible after one and/or two embolisation procedures. These patients had plain and contrast-enhanced spiral CT. The diagnosis was aneurysm in 9 (8 berry aneurysms, one giant fusiform aneurysm), AVM in 13 (all supratentorial) and traumatic arteriovenous fistula in one. In 9 patients there were no detectable pathological vascular findings. After 3D reconstruction the size (between 5 and 28 mm), location and the relationship to the parent vessel of the aneurysms, the extent of the AVMs and the distribution of the embolisation material could be demonstrated clearly. The main feeding vessel(s), nidus and draining veins were reliably shown. The decreased extent of the AVMs after embolisation was clearly demonstrated. There was no difference in diagnosis when DSA and 3D-CT were compared by two independent radiologists. We consider arterial spiral CT with 3D reconstruction to have the potential of offering important diagnostic information for the treatment of intracranial AVMs and aneurysms.

    Notizen: Abstract: We study the recognition of -classes of multi-germs in families of corank-1 maps from n-space into n-space. From these recognition conditions we deduce certain geometric properties of bifurcation sets of such families of maps. As applications we give a formula for the number of -codimension-1 classes of corank-1 multi-germs from ℂ n to ℂ n and an upper bound for the number of stable projections of algebraic hypersurfaces in ℝ n +1 into hyperplanes.

The view graph of a surface N in 3-space is a graph embedded in the space ${\cal V}$ of centers or directions of projection, whose nodes correspond to maximal connected regions of ${\cal V}$ which yield equivalent views of N . The size of the view graph of a piecewise smooth algebraic surface N with transverse self-intersection curves and isolated triple-points and cross-caps is O(n K dim $\cal V$ d 6 dim $\cal V$), where n and d denote the number of ``component surfaces'' of N and their maximal degree, respectively, and where K=6 in general or K=3 for N diffeomorphic to the boundary of a polyhedron. (For surfaces without cross-caps, this bound has been established in [17].) Also, for the special piecewise linear case, where d=1 and K=3 , it is known that the size of the view graph is actually $\Theta$ (n3 dim $\cal V$). It is shown that the exact view graphs of such surfaces can be determined in O(n K(2 dim $\cal V$ +1)). $\cal P$ (d,L) time by a deterministic algorithm and in O(n K dim $\cal V +\epsilon$). $\cal P$ (d,L) expected time by a randomized algorithm. Here $\cal P$ is some polynomial, L is the maximal coefficient size of the defining polynomials of N , and ε is an arbitrarily small positive constant.     Notizen: Abstract To reduce fabrication costs of fibre-optic terminal modules for interactive services, an InGaAsP/InP chip fabrication process has been developed for monolithic integration of a strained-layer multiple quantum well laser, a monitor diode and a photoreceiver with a 1300/1530nm filter. Reception responsivity and output power of the chips are 0.1 AW-1 at 1300nm wavelength and 4.5mW at 1530nm wavelength, respectively. At present, complete modules with fibre pigtail exhibit 0.7mW launch power, but 1.4 mW is expected with the latest chips.

    Notizen: Abstract Crosslinked highly carboxylated acrylic latices with narrow particle size distributions were prepared by emulsion polymerization and characterized carefully by different AUC techniques (particle size distributions and particle density measurements). The acid form of those latices was neutralized with metal oxides like MgO, CaO, ZnO, or PbO in order to obtain the corresponding salt form of the latices which again were characterized carefully. The kinetics of the ion exchange between latex particles were studied by mixing, for example, the acid and the salt form of the latices monitoring the density distribution of the latex particles by density gradient ultracentrifugation. With all latices the hydrogen-metal ion exchange tends to be a complete one provided this process is given a sufficiently long exchange time. Theoretical models are provided which yield a qualitative explanation of the experimental data.

    Notizen: Abstract In a previous paper we have listed some stable features of lines of maximal slope (“edges”) of a single generic greyvalue surface. In 1-parameter families of Gaussian blurred greyvalue surfaces the stable features, such asA 3-curvature extrema and ordinary nodes of the edge line, occur for open intervals of the parameter axis, but at isolated “bad” parameter values degenerate features, such asA 4-curvature extrema, isolated points and rhamphoid cusps, can occur. An efficient edge-based “scale-space” description of a 1-parameter family of greyvalue surfaces would consist of a set of “representative images”, where each element of this set represents exactly one open interval in the complement of the “bad” parameter values. It transpires that the number of image regions in the complement of the edge lines can increaselocally as the standard deviation of the Gaussian kernel increases (globally, i.e. when the standard deviation tends to infinity, one, of course, expects a single image region). This somewhat surprising behaviour is not restricted to certain “pathological” 1-parameter families of greyvalue surfaces but, on the contrary, arises ingeneric 1-parameter families. It also turns out that the same local edge features occur in generic solutions of certain non-linear (greyvalue) diffusion equations.

    Notizen: Abstract A round robin test was performed to determine the reliability of values for the glass transition temperatureT g as determined by DTA on polymers. Ten different instruments were involved. The test material was high molecular weight polystyrene. Values forT g (midpoint) were reported in the range 107°C±2 K. The respective heat flow curves differed considerably in shape. In the literature aT g of 100°C is often given for polystyrene. The discrepancy between this value and the value of 107°C found in the round robin test is due to three differences: the thermal history of the sample, the evaluation of the heat flow curves, and the effect of finite sample size.
