Notes: A quartz-crystal microbalance technique for measuring total sputter yields in ion–surface collisions is described. The electronic circuit to drive the quartz crystal ensures low noise and high frequency stability. By measuring total sputter yields for impact of singly charged ions on LiF target films a sensitivity limit of 0.5% of a monolayer per minute could be achieved. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In situ reflectance difference spectroscopy (RDS) has been performed during growth and nitrogen-doping of ZnTe thin films fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy. The doping level of the ZnTe samples can be determined by evaluating the RD spectra in the vicinity of the E1 and E1+Δ1 transitions. RDS features in this spectral range were used to optimize online the doping performance of the N-plasma cell. Furthermore, doping-induced surface processes have been investigated, like surface saturation with activated N species and surface Fermi level pinning occurring at ambient pressure. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We analyzed the intrinsic defects and the n-type-carrier concentration generated by nitrogen ion implantation in n-type GaN by deep-level-transient spectroscopy and by capacitance–voltage measurements, respectively. The samples were grown on sapphire by metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy. Nitrogen implantation with different ion doses and postimplantation rapid-thermal annealing (RTA) were investigated. We observed a growing n-type-carrier concentration and increasing defect concentration with increasing nitrogen ion implantation doses. After RTA the concentration of free carriers and deep levels as found in the as-grown state are restored. We also address contrarily seeming results from measurements of sheet resistance after N implantation published recently. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: There is evidence to suggest that human keratinocytes grown in vitro are capable of engulfing and subsequently disintegrating intact liposomes. However, as the liposomes used in this context did not carry an electron-dense marker, the possibility that the lamellar structures seen within the keratinocytes were composed of material produced within the cell could not be excluded. We therefore decided to investigate liposome-keratinocyte interaction using an electron-dense markerHuman keratinocytes obtained from juvenile foreskins were cultured in a serum-free medium, and subconfluent cultures were exposed to liposomally encapsulated and free silver sulphadiazine 1% (SSD). and a corresponding vehicle, for 5 min to 24 h. After fixation ultra-thin sections were analysed electron microscopically at magnifications of up to × 85.000Many keratinocytes treated with liposomal and free SSD showed marked damage to the plasma membranes and the cell organelles. The phagocytosis of intact liposomes was demonstrated by the appearance of silver-labelled unilamellar vesicles within the cytoplasm of undamaged keratinocytes. The labelled liposomes were found enclosed in cellular unit membranes. i. e. in Iysosomes. In addition, perinuclear disintegration and release of the entrapped marker were observed. Silver particles, as present in liposomally encapsulated SSD, were found to be adequate markers for electron microscopyOur results confirm the phagocytosis of intact liposomes by keratinocytes in vitroIn addition, the cytotoxic effects of liposomal (intended for the treatment of burns) and free SSD on human keratinocytes were studied in detail. Many keratinocytes treated for 10 min or more were severely affected.

Notes: Mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sezary syndrome (SS) are closely related cutaneous T-cell lymphotmas, which differ in several clinical aspects. We compared histological and immunophenotypical features of these two entities, which could be implicated in the dermotropism and epidermotropism, characteristic for both of them. Thirteen biopsy specimens from patients with established plaque-stage MF and 13 from SS patients were examined retrospectively, and 21 histological criteria were assessed. Further, 9 cryosections from MF lesions and 9 from SS lesions were stained for LFA, ICAM1, CD40, CD40-ligand, CD28, CD80, CTLA-4, CD86, FAS, FAS-ligand, CLA and CD 15s. The only histological criteria that showed persistent differences were acanthosis (in 12 of 13 SS and in 7 of 13 MF specimens) and Pautrier collections (detected in 6 SS and 11 MF biopsies). Patterns of staining with the antibodies mentioned above were found to be similar. Our results indicate that these interaction molecules seem to be involved in the pathogenesis of MF and SS, but their immunohistochemical distribution does not contribute to the differentiation between the two entities.

Notes: Cytogenetic analyses were performed on a triploid hybrid individual produced in the laboratory by mating Poecilia formosa, an all-female gynogenetic diploid species, with a normal male of melanistic ornamental Poecilia sphenops (black molly). Direct chromosome preparations revealed 69 (3n) chromosomes in the somatic complement. This cytogenetic observation in conjunction with the pigmentation phenotype leads us to conclude that occasional failure of sperm exclusion may result in the presence of triploid hybrids even in the natural habitats.

Notes: Abstract Epibenthic brittle star assemblages were investigated on the northwestern Barents Sea shelf between 81° and 77°N in July 1991. At 9 drift stations in water depths between 80 and 360 m, series of 35–71 photographs, each depicting about 1 m2 of the seabed, were taken along transects of about 150- to 300-m length to assess abundances and spatial distribution patterns of adult brittle stars (disc diameter ≥1 mm). Biomass values were derived by combining abundances with size-weight relationships and size frequencies established using specimens from trawl catches. Six brittle star species were identified on the seabed images.Ophiocten sericeum was the most abundant species on shallow shelf banks (≤100 m). Up to 2,800 individuals were counted on a single photograph; median abundances per station ranged from 32 to 524 ind.m−2 and biomass from 0.3 to 5.0 g ash-free dry weight (AFDW) m−2. The spatial distribution along the transects (i.e. on the 100-m scale) was, however, extremely patchy. Disc diameters ofO. sericeum ranged between 1.6 mm and 15.4 mm. In deeper shelf habitats (〉150 m),O. sericeum was rare or absent, andOphiacantha bidentata dominated the brittle star fauna with median densities and biomasses of 2–49 ind.m−2 and 0.07–1.9 g AFDW m−2, respectively. Its disc diameters ranged from 2.9 to 14.4 mm. The other species (Ophiura sarsi, Ophiopholis aculeata, Ophioscolex glacialis, Ophiopleura borealis) occurred in distinctly lower numbers. Our findings provide further evidence that brittle stars dominate epibenthic communities on Arctic shelves and locally reach very high abundances. Dense beds ofOphiocten sericeum seem to be a general phenomenon on high-Arctic shallow shelf banks.

Notes: Abstract Capillary zone electrophoresis was used to separate arsenite, arsenate, dimethylarsinic and diphenylarsinic acid, methanearsonic acid, phenyl- and p-aminophenyl arsonic acid, phenylarsineoxide and phenarsazinic acid. Anionic and uncharged species were separated in a fused silica capillary with on-column UV detection at 200 nm. A 15 mM phosphate solution adjusted to pH 6.5 containing 10 mM sodium dodecylsulfonate served as background electrolyte. The influence of pH and applied voltage on separation efficiency, as well as the feasibility of identification of arsenic compounds in spiked urine, were investigated.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of MR gastrography, based on 3D MRI following the oral administration of Gd-DOTA-enriched blueberry juice, in order to depict alterations of the gastric wall. The stomachs of three volunteers and three patients were examined on a 1.5-T MR system. Following ingestion of 400 ml of blueberry juice spiked with 2 ml of Gd-DOTA, each subject underwent 3D MR imaging in three positions: 45 ° left lateral decubitus, supine, and 45 ° right lateral decubitus. In each position, a coronal 3D SPGR acquisition consisting of 60 continuous 2-mm slices was acquired over a 35-s breathhold (TR/TE = 4.0/1.8 ms, 40 ° flip angle, 0.5 excitations, voxel size of 1.25 × 1.66 × 2.00 mm). Multiplanar reformats (MPR), maximum intensity projections (MIP), surface shaded displays (SSD), and virtual intraluminal endoscopic views (VIE) were calculated. Magnetic resonance gastroscopy was tolerated well by all subjects without adverse effects. Based on the 3D MRI data sets acquired in various patient positions, all regions of the stomach and the proximal duodenum were visualized to good advantage. Whereas MPR and MIP provided a morphologic overview, SSD and VIE images permitted analysis of the gastric mucosa. Normal mucosa could be differentiated from the course and irregular pattern characterizing carcinomatous infiltration. The 3D SPGR data sets acquired following ingestion of oral Gd-DOTA-spiked blueberry juice permits exoscopic and virtual endoscopic viewing of the stomach.
