    Notizen: Abstract It was shown previously that adsorption of ions at the electrical double layer of a high specific surface area carbon electrode can serve for water desalination. This is effected by assembling two such electrodes in a cell, cycling electronic charge between them and applying periodic synchronous pumping of the liquid through the cell. This process has been termed Electrochemical Parametric Pumping (ECPP). In the present article, modified charge coordinates, desalting efficiencies, isopotentiograms (analogous to adsorption isotherms) and optimization considerations of the two adsorptive electrode batch unit of the ECPP were derived and analysed on the basis of the propterties of each single electrode separately.

    Notizen: Abstract Multistage electrochemical parametric pumping has been successfully carried out for water desalination. Separation was effected by electroadsorption-desorption cycles of the ions into and from the electrical double layer of high surface carbon electrodes. At steady state and total reflux, the concentration ratio between the upper and lower heads of the electrochemical column was as high as 150. Two models for the build up of the concentration profile within the column are presented. The first is based on a solution of the two-phase mass transport equation using the proper boundary and initial conditions. The second treatment is based on the mixed cells assumptions. In both treatments, interphase equilibrium is assumed using the isopotentiograms as the specific equilibrium curves. Use is also made of a fast computer for the simulation of the electrochemical paramatric pumping cycles. The two models are in good agreement with the experimental results particularly in the cases where the initial concentration is high and interphase equilibrium is maintained.

    Notizen: Abstract An electrochemical reactor operated with two identical solution streams injected in opposite directions on the same axis, and leaving it at a normal direction was studied by measuring local and global mass transfer coefficients and visualization of solution flow patterns. This flow configuration was compared to a case where a single stream enters the reactor and leaves it on the same axis. It was found that only the data obtained for the single stream mode can be correlated by the Chilton-Colburn relation, indicating a near laminar boundary layer flow. Global mass transfer coefficients for the single stream mode were found to be slightly higher than those for the interacting jets mode. However, when comparing the two modes by taking into account the dimensionless ratio of the mass transfer coefficient (Sh) to the energy consumption (Eu), it was found that the interacting jets (IJ) mode exhibits a better performance as compared to the single stream mode. The superiority of the IJ mode increases with increasing Reynold's number (Re).

    Notizen: Abstract The continuous removal of toxichexavalent chromium from contaminated solutions by means of a graphite felt based electrochemical column was studied. The process is based on anin situ generation of appropriate pH gradients which allows both rapid reduction to Cr3+ and its precipitation within the electrode bed. Conditions for the attainment of low (〈25 p.p.b.) effluent concentrations as well as longitudinal concentration distribution of the precipitate and maximum loading capacities are presented. Treatment schemes involving two separate columns or a dual function column are also discussed.

    Notizen: Summary Semimembranosus tenosynovitis is a common knee problem in the over-50 age-group, occurring mainly in women. It affects the reflected portion of the tendon of the semimembranosus muscle as well as the bursa below it. The tendon becomes inflamed as a result of friction at the entrance to the bony canal (semimembranosus groove), especially if osteophytes are present on the edges of the groove. Conservative treatment includes anti-inflammatory drugs, ultrasound, and friction massage. If necessary, nonresponders may be given local injection of 40–80 mg methylprednisolone acetate with 1% Xylocaine. Between 1979 and 1983 we operated on 16 patients who had not obtained relief even after three or four injections. The approach in each case was through a posterior medial oblique incision. The semimembranosus osteofibrotic tunnel was revealed and the fibrous sheath surrounding the tendon was excised. Good results were obtained in eight patients in whom the inflammatory process had been localized to only the semimembranosus insertion area: eight patients in whom the knee joint or the pes anserinus insertion was also involved achieved fair or poor results. The operation is not advised for young athletes because of the important function of the reflected head of the semimembranosus muscle.

    Notizen: Abstract The transverse energy cross-sectiondσ/dE T has been measured in the pseudorapidity region 0.6〈η〈2.4 for hadron-lead collisions at 200 GeV/c incident hadron momentum. TheE T distribution extends to 40 GeV, which is twice the kinematic limit forp-p collisions at the same incident beam momentum. The distribution ofE T is found to shift towards low pseudorapidities with increasing total transverse energy.
